I love how, every time they talk about George and Life of Brian, both Eric and John Cleese both always use the joke about George buying the most expensive cinema ticket ever. XD
George may have been number 3 or 4 in the Beatles, but he won the post Beatle life going away. Imagine being the reason why the greatest comedy ever made got made. And being in the Beatles. What an incredible man.
@@m.c.b.4323 Mate, he was the third to join. and third in terms of written material for the Beatles. Settle down. The point was how much more he blossomed outside the Beatles, more than any of them.
Aw, they seemed like such good friends. They're both incredible men. Whoa, George sold his house to help pay for Life of Brian? What a cool dude he was. This was really sweet and funny. :)
Mortgaged, not sold. He might have had to sell if the movie was a flop, but it was a big hit, so he continued to live in that same house until the day he died.
Eric Idle your comment on how we take ourselves so dam seriously and why as this life is all temporal. Let's face rich or poor we are all going to die. It's love and relating to one another in a loving and kind manner, George seemed to live his life this way. The insights shared in his lyrics and music seem to indicate this truth. He was a loving and spiritually fit human being.. Loving, absolutely loving... I will always return to his music songs like "This is love" what a pick me up!
I'm paraphrasing this comment that Eric Idle stated in his Greedy Bastard book and writing about George, for someone who was the quite beatle he never shut up.
The Beatles badly mismanaged their business affairs in the sixties, and Britain had very high tax rates for wealthy people until Thatcher took over in 1979. George wasn't poor, but he had spent most of his money on the "house"--a 120 room mansion that he bought in 1970 and then did a lot of upkeep and remodeling on.
I'm just imagining people twenty minutes later....."wait, didn't the beatles break up". Why do I think if somebody dressed as John Lennon there would still be people wanting his autograph thinking its him.
I guess George never even made a slight reference to me, huh? Saw him twice in 1979 and your movies were born. And, Hand Made Films!!! I do not lie. Love your stuff Eric, I wish I was dead too, singing that song, Love it, I do. So, I've seen his intensity, not scary if that's what he's about. Too serious on energy projection, I could've laughed but didn't. It didn't seem he really believed in "What Is Life"(s) meaning. I asked him to write a song with that name. And description too. Sorry, but his energy was not friendly, like something was bothering him maybe. It's a Python Monty world. Lol. G'day mates.
This story seems to vary depending on who's telling it, John Cleese claims the movie cost around 2.5 million to make but the studio would only put up around half the money so George Harrison put up the other half. Now suddenly it's 4 million and entirely financed by George Harrison?
You'd think so, but during the 1960s they were on a 90% tax rate, also John and Paul got by far the biggest share of the wealth and then after the break up they had to sue each other as their money was frozen, then George had the My Sweet Lord law suit, which lost him a lot of money. In buying George's House "Friar Park" he over extended himself, and his later records didn't sell in the numbers Paul's did and he didn't tour, so it's quite credible that he didn't have the money lying around. Apparently he did the Anthology largely because his film company went bust and he needed the money.
Thank you George. You gave the world the best comedy film of all time
Two actually if you include "Withnail and I"

$4 million USD in 1978 = $15 million in 2018.
in pounds?
@Master Farr In pounds? Not sure, how much does $4M dollars weigh?
It's a lot more than $15m
@@stevenknight1198 According to Inflation Calculator, it is. Now it would be $19 million USD.
Don't be silly
Those pictures of George flashing over the screen as Eric was talking are gorgeous.

George Harrison: Living in the Material World
Nice documentary.
i wish there were people who would do that. just give someone the money for a movie because he/she wants to see it. that is cool.

George was a good soul!!!!
I'm paraphrasing this comment that Eric Idle stated in his Greedy Bastard book and writing about George, for someone who was the quite beatle he never shut up.
George was the real custodian of the Total Perspective Vortex.
what a giving man george was
George was the soul of the Beatles, John the mind, Paul the heart and Ringo the flesh and blood
George was all four, the rest breathed
@@andredegiant3876
👏👏Thank you. And I don't agree Paul being the heart, he was something else I am not going to say.
*and Ringo the drummer
We Americans think all English people know each other - then it turns out, they do.
it's a small island!

Why does this so few views? Great interviews here!
excellent and essential UA-cam post! can't wait to vide this when time permits!!
That was a good investment, he actually made a lot of money with the film
I’m surprised George Harrison had to mortgage his house for the money. I guess the Beatles wouldn’t become gazillionaires until the 90’s.
Yeah good point. Unless his accountant told him to do it that way for tax purposes or some other financial reason? Who knows?
It actually makes more sense financially than just giving 2 mill of his own money...
I bet his return on investment was huge

George made about $20 million on the deal.

£2.5m pounds back then was $4m dollars 😂
The old boy's network was horrible back then. George did something about it.
I still can't believe that George Harrison didn't have $4 million just lying around somewhere and had to go to all that trouble.

@@keriford54 I knew none of this, but that certainly explains it. Thank you!
George is far and away my favorite Beatle. I hope to meet him some day, but something tells me the answer is disappointing...
Um, yeah, he's dead.
He mortgaged his house for 4 million dollars! Fuck, at the time he was probably worth £ 100 million pounds!!!
At the time, it was the record companies that were really getting rich. Most of Harrison's money was in that house.
From were you got it? *o*
When was this video recorded?
Probably in 2010, since the documentary was released one year later.
You have to admire people with vision and poor taste. I love python. God Bless George.
Was the reason why EMI refused to fund the movie, because of its religious satire and found it offensive?
Did they pay him back?
Ron ??
?
0:56 Ron Lennon
Neil Innes played Ron Nasty, who was The Rutles version of John Lennon.🤨
Eric Idle = Gene Wilder
Yeah - but those "peasants" made him rich!
These guys tend to forget that, don't they?
