  • Today I’ll be repotting my Fuji cherry pre-bonsai tree, I’m potting it into a larger bonsai training pot to thicken up.
I’ll also give it a little prune.

Im glad to see you just using compost and potting grit. It's all i have been able to use. Substate is one of the most difficult things about bonsai. Most fourms and videos debate about the best combination of akadama, lava rock, molar clay, pine bark etc. But i think for pre-bonsai all you need is gritty compost to provide plenty of nutrients and be free draining. After that you can use the other to help with ramification of roots etc.

I don’t see that it matters to much what soil you use, as long as you can get it to drain well. Some of my trees are planted in normal mud, I just use what I have at the time, haven’t got the funds for bonsai soil yet.
