Can u do this in an ordinary plastic greenhouse smaller scale ?
@@Shereen.594yes you can
This is a great idea thanks. I'm getting aa greenhouse for my 50th!
An update: I made this at the allotment 6 days ago. Went today to check and it’s warm!! It’s actually working!! I’ll be placing a pallet above it tomorrow and starting some seeds. We’ll be 2 months ahead. Thank you for sharing x
Hearing little kids playing in the background is likely my favorite part of your videos, they sound so joyful❤️
The builders bag idea is genius!
I started digging out trenches in my greenhouse to fill with wood and green shreddings and stuff. You’ve reminded me I need to get back to it. (Plus I’m using the greenhouse to dry clothes in, so I can’t build upwards).
I knew a guy that raised rabbits in his green house. It kept the plants warm and he used the fertilizer from them.then the excess plant matter fed the rabbits. Then the rabbits fed the family.
I thought about doing something similar in my greenhouse but I still have things growing in there
@@MyFamilyGarden they were in cages under the plants.
That would be a great idea. The heat from the rabbits bodies, their decomposing waste for fertilizer, and the garden extra, to feed the animals, plus then the meat from the rabbits. That is a win, win.
Great video mate! It is lovely to see someone genuinely loving being in the garden! Definately going to give this a go. You're a great man. Thanks!
Thanks Mark, that's a really kind thing to say.
I did this last year. Worked great, heated up nicely, until February cold weather set in. It was too cold for the compost to break down...about 25 degrees inside the greenhouse. There was no heat given off. Zone 6, so we moved a couple propane patio heaters in for a couple nights.
"it's like it was made for the job" oh i do love those moments
Oh yeas! just those little things that make life easier
You and “David the Good” have the best composting videos. Both know how to turn stinky stuff into valuable stuff.
Nothing makes me happier than when I'm playing with poo 🤣😂🤣
This is exactly how the Victorians did it and yes they did grow Pineapples. Great stuff, love it x
I planted my chillies and aubergines into it today
@@MyFamilyGarden how’re they going using this method?
Where in UK?
Ive notice that the people living in great Britain have been doing green houses lot longer than we here in states so that's why I watch them for ideas
thanks for watching hope it was helpful
@TO NO The invention of the wrought iron glazing bar in 1816 made construction of the glasshouse possible (Huxley, Griffiths, Levy, 1992). Wealthy English families purchased private glasshouses to create living areas which would allow in plenty of light but protect them from the nasty weather. As more plants became available from abroad, people began to fill their glasshouses with exotic plants and even create separate buildings, detached conservatories, for the purpose of collecting and housing plants (Huxley, Griffiths, Levy, 1992). Initially this hobby was restricted to plants in conservatories, but some people began to try growing some of them outdoors, sometimes with surprising results.
I was very surprised to learn this . I am only 200 years late ....😂😂
Also the accent is killer.
@@katherandefy hahaha 😁😁
I’ve just started growing here in the uk and just built a raised bed with polly tunnel it’s a shame UA-cam don’t allow the sharing of pictures cost me less then £50 to built a large raised bed with polly tunnel the bit that costs the most starting out is the soil and compost and all the other bits but once your growing the cost reduces drastically
Thank you! Divine timing for us. We are a newly formed community allotment (4 plots, 3 poly tunnels) this is the perfect solution to heat at least one tunnel, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge x
This is genius. One of the smartest pieces of advice on greenhouses I've seen.
Thanks Abe, i'm making some changes to it this year so it heats better, just trying to work out a few glitches
@@MyFamilyGarden Will check it out. I wish I had known this trick before all the greens around here turned brown. I'm kinda out of nitrogen now. Guess I need to go source some dung. Anybody got dung?
Manure is probably the best bet at this time of year. If you contact some stable/riding schools they'll normally let you have it for free
Loved your video but most of all I love how you respond to questions and comments in a kind way. Great idea I think we will try it. I loved how you just used what you had around the yard.
I don't think gardening should be an expensive hobby. I think if someone takes the time to write to me it's only fair I write back 😊
A great liner for the inside are empty dogfood or feed bags. Cut or pulled apart at the seam and opened up wide, then we staple it to the insides of the pallet for a liner.
Good suggestion. I've made some changes this year, the videos went up recently
That is a good combination of greens and browns and manure . Thanks for sharing good content.
You're very welcome,
Great Job on this video! I like the way you took your time and explained everything you was doing for all of us.
Thanks Joseph, I'll be making some modifications to the process this year and uploading in a few weeks
Morning Ali, as I'm creating a little polytunnel for overwinter growing, I researched and found this. Thanks as ever
Very impressed by this video. You seem such a regular hard working person using everything around you in an imaginative manner and producing food. Best UA-cam channel for gardening. No expensive list to run out and buy! Amazing! God Bless.
When I started gardening I could barely afford a bag of compost, I really believe we should make gardening as accessible to everyone
@@MyFamilyGarden well you have come far! Gardners make the world a better place and will always do well. Good luck to reach the heights you deserve 🌈.
Amazing use of the wooden ballets ,
thats one fantastic idea and a ton of fantastic compost for the raised beds in the spring of the next year i am learning all the time stay safe atb
I'm just about to refresh the bed for this spring so it tarts giving off a nice heat again
Interesting method .. first time seeing a hotbed
Thank you, Monty ... Always learning from my fellow gardeners
It makes perfect sense too ... Browns and greens
My woods chips are always pushing out heat ...
Have a great week
Thanks brother, you're quite lucky in your climate but the heat I expect brings other issues.
Awesome way to heat a green house using a Hotbed. An excellent idea. Like 51.
Thanks so much
Wow what a great idea. 💡 very resourceful and economical way to heat the greenhouse
It worked pretty well. I'm going to make a few adaptations to it this year
Great idea Monty. A lot of folks don't realize how warm compost gets.
Rob
I've set up another smaller pile aswell
Great video my brother I made a hotbed by total accident one year and it was so hot I couldn’t touch it that’s no joke. I’m just trying to bloody remember how I did it so I can use it for my greenhouse now lol
Try this and see how you get on
Alot of hard work, Thanks for recording and showing.
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic video, such a great idea... love thats its natural too🙏🏽👌🏾🌿💚🌿💚🌿💚🌿 Great job💃🏾
You know your stuff fella.
Great information. Cheers Andy
Using the builders bag is a great idea nice video bro
Thanks big man! Looks like it's starting to work
This is a great idea! Looks like I’m moving my compost into the greenhouse, thanks for the vid
Brill video. Simple way to build a greenhouse hot bed.
You keep it simple.
Peace
Thanks Steve, I may have over complicated it in my latest attempt though 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for this I have bought a polytunnel so I can grow all year round crops
Glad I could help
Also get fresh compost for spring great idea ! Love it.
Jazakallah khair, inshallah should produce some good compost
I've just started growing veg this year, super helpful and easy to understand thank you
Very cool monty! I haven't seen this in actual practice before, so ty!
The pile is starting to warm up nicely, I'll be planting into it this weekend
this was EXACTLY what I was looking for, thanks so much. Love your channel!
You are so welcome!
This is a great video, thanks!! I’ve been looking at how I’m gonna heat my poly tunnel, I think this is will hit two birds with one stone, heating and a place for compost.
Glad it helped!
Absolutely great video ..I have a tiny plastic greenhouse but I'm going to have a go on a smaller scale! Thank you!🎉
What a great idea to do this in your greenhouse. Great video.
It worked quite well, i did a follow up to this where i planted into it ua-cam.com/video/qzcggsmymYA/v-deo.html
@@MyFamilyGarden Thanks mate I will give it a watch.
Very informative. I will definitely give this a try this year.
Thank u 4 the step by step instructions and visuals because as a new gardener don't always know the terms and what they mean. Example I know what compost is but 4 a very long time only put leaves in it. I faithfully turned it and watered it but hate to say I moved after 2 years and got to use because it was still just wet slimy leaves.
Leaves contain a lot of carbon so they need some nitrogen to help them compost. This might help ua-cam.com/video/itQBY5J_sh8/v-deo.html
This is exactly what I needed to see Monty - thank you!
Glad it was helpful! the key is to go heavy on the greens so it stays hot for longer
love what you do , an inspiration to everyone
You keep it simple it is good and that is why you reached 1 million good man it is great for newcomers to gardening and people like me not so able bodied to learn thank you
Hi Billie, thanks for the support I'm glad they help. I also suffer from back problems so have to work in a way that's not so difficult
@@MyFamilyGarden I also have back problems and Arthritis and heart problems I have started composting and I'm getting my garden ready for next April after the frost and then into the summer I will start building a green house. I have my trays ready for seeds to see in my shed before replanting outside after the frost clears any advice on planting seeds for scallions, onions and carrots I will just plant root potatoes outside when the frost is gone? Congrats and keep the good work up you are doing great keeping things nice and simple for us all
I've done a few videos on growing onions, carrots and I grow potatoes in woodchips so they have a nice lose soil to grow in
@@MyFamilyGarden thank you
🇬🇧 Thanks for this, the bag is an excellent idea. You could also use shredded paper in amongst the compost.
Lots of Country houses used this method for growing tropical plant
I wish I had a country house
Nicely done! Thank you for the idea. I'll be watching more if your videos.
Yes, I have builders bag, a pallet and stuff to put in - have a guess what am making today 😃 yay
Awesome, the bag would be better to staple/fix the bag in place because it will quicky move as the compost pile shrinks
@@MyFamilyGarden okay thanks, I've actually got a table rather than pallet. Gonna take top off, turn it upside down so I have frame, wrap in wire and stick the bag inside. I will show vids n pics soon as I have done all of them (too busy with my new allotment). So much credit to you though, followed your advice n ideas with this project, my chillies and my garlic/onion bed. Thanks so much for all that you put out. 🌞👍🙂
What great knowledge. Thank you for sharing the information.
Glad it was helpful
Asalamualaykum. From Sydney Australia I have just come across your gardening channel and loving it the information is very comprehensive keep up the good work love the content
Walaikum salaam, Jazakallah khair glad you found us
Interesting video. Embarking on this technique myself this year in an attempt to get earlier yields in these times of fresh food shortages. Seems the technique goes back yonks, maybe even to ancient Egypt. It will be interesting to see over the next month or so if we can effectively lengthen the growing season using hot beds. Thanks!
I live in Texas. It is 90 degrees at the end of September, but I want a green house. 😀
Thank you for the video! Just looking into getting a greenhouse going. I live in MN USA and love my gardens. Excited to try a green house for winter months, this looks like a great idea!
Great info! Thank you for making this video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Really enjoyed watching this. Very impressed with materials you have gathered. Some great ideas. Love and peace from Australia
Nice one. Very real, and aproachable. Thanks.
This is Amazing! I am going to try this next year. Thank you
thanks, it's definately a good free way of heating
Looks fantastic and I'm very jealous of that amazing looking horse shit. Where on earth did you get it at this time of year without wood shavings/bedding included?
Thanks so much lol, I love a good pile of muck 😂🤣😂
There are some stables local to me that has manure bagged up ready to take
My sister has horses but I have to come with my own shovel.. 😆
Thank you. That's a very good idea. I really like your videos. Thank you for teaching us 🌿🌿🍀🍀🤗
I definatly learned a very valuable lesson today.
Fantastically useful video. Thank you.
Nice job of explaining the way you did this and how it works. Thank you very much!
Glad you liked it!
My Family Garden,
Excellent point, Jack.
I live in East Texas, I only need something to protect for a couple of days to two weeks at a time maximum, through winter. The hotbed concept seems very viable, with the added benefit of nutrient rich compost is a terrific bonus.
Now, how’s about a cooling system for this time next year? 🤣
You could add more heat sinks, big rocks, water etc. The hotbed once it loses its heat will also act as one
Ascw wb mashaa alaah brother iam learning from you alot I use to grow flowers only now insha alaah iam going to start same veg I don't have big space it's only back garden becouse what u doing that'little green house it encourage me jizaakalaahu qeyr may Allah protect and give you and family keep health higher insha alaah ascw wb
Ameen ya rabbul alameen. We do everything in our backyard. I was going to start a series on small space gardening but got hit with covid so I'm a little behind
I have had difficulty growing zuchinis in winter in my hot house below 15 c kills the plant. The hotbed idea will help me
for that size greenhouse get a bale of straw wrap it tight in black plastic put 3 small X cuts in the top put a funnel and feed liquid feed (nettle - comfrey )put two plants in the bale you will feel the bale getting warm ive kept the frost out until spring / and a bonus next year you will have amazing compost
Good video! Thank you. I will use this method in spring. I live in Canada.
Thanks Francine, I'm going to try some modifications to the process this year
Great job. Look forward to know how it worked.
Thank you so much, checked the temp today it's warming up nicely
Great video my friend I love the way you took your time and explained everything I’m going to try that in my polytunnel it’s 25x15 you and your family stay safe with this virus and I love the bag idea 🤝
Thank you! This is very helpful and I plan to use this technique to heat up my small greenhouse.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for sharing. I need to put one in our greenhouse.
They come in very handy
Fantastic video. Great learning. Thank you. Please advise your view on the smallest size you advise for the hot bed.
Thanks Robert, I think the smallest would be 3ft by 3ft, smaller than that and it won't heat properly and if it does the heat will quickly be lost from the pile, ideally it should be 1 metre by 1 metre
What a fab technique and very well explained. At the end of the season do you just turn it out onto the compost heap and start again .........recycling some of it into your new layers?
This was a good idea I’m going to have to add to my list of ideas.
thanks so much, i'll be planting into it this week
Just found this video and very inspirational with great ideas and content well done
Glad you enjoyed it!
I wasn’t getting notifications for you so I’m glad I came and checked cause I was unsubscribed! 😱 what the heck UA-cam!! So I rejoined.
Great video Monty! Your greenhouse is awesome! Wish I could have a little one.
No way!!! UA-cam messes with so many people! It's a DIY greenhouse just made out of polycarbonate and recycled wood
Hi just found your videos. I think they are fantastic and I have to say better than most I've seen regarding using everything from the garden and letting nothing go to waste. I have a rabbit and use his droppings in the garden, there is no worry of contaminants either. It is safe to use straight away and will not burn, although when mixed with hay can act as a great compost activator added to greens aswell. It is 4x richer than hot manure in nutrients and you can put the droppings in a bucket add water and use as a liquid feed aswell.
Keep the videos coming.i saw another man using the hotbed to start off his seedlings by putting the seed trays on top of the heap.
I'm so glad you found us, The kids keep asking for some more pets i was thinking about rabbits, but just worried about the additional work load for me lol
@@MyFamilyGarden They do need cleaning out every 2 days and can be extra work. I only have one and a cat so ok for me regarding the care. I don't have chickens to take care of like you do 😊
Thank you for showing us. You're such an inspiration to novice gardeners - I subbed early this morning and binged watched your vlogs until 3AM and then later on today! We have decided to create our own hot house as we approach Winter. Once again thank you :)
one of the best comments for a long time, nice one
Thank you! I’ll give this a try
This is so helpful and appreciate your sharing.
You are so welcome!
Great Video! Thanks for the explanation and walking us through the steps. I will have to add this to our approach next year!
Thanks mate, it's definitely worth trying
Great video mate, just discovered your channel, I'll be working my way through your vids.
Glad you like it, looking forward to hearing from you
Might need oxygen mask for work in greenhouse? But you are very good on getting the heat going. Good video and explanations. Think I still have a bag like you have, for my new built poly tunnel Thanks for all the tips.
It's quite well ventilated so not much of an issue. Good luck with yours
Oxygen masks are for sick people in the hospital...
You don't breath oxygen for toxic atmospheres, you breathe normal compressed air.
Absolutely incredible!
loved that video Monty 🙂👍
Thanks Jackie hopefully get planting this weekend
Fantastic idea and video. However, I have like 20 piles of hot compost and the best thing you could do to get more heat, is introduce oxygen by mixing every few days. Piss also works incredible for kickstarting a compost pile, due to the insanely high nitrogen content
Great video; that is a really good point about the hedge trimmings, it really makes sense, though I cannot say I have ever considered this to be the case.
With a lot of browns they can be composted from using just the nitrogen in the air, the difficulty can be getting the aire to flow through the pile
@@MyFamilyGarden I am currently cheating and allowing worms to do the hard work for me, although I currently have no need for a hot pile.
Very interesting, I've been thinking about the best way of heating my greenhouse. This is definitely a contender, although I think I'd have to do something similar outside the greenhouse and pipe the heat in. By the way, they grow pineapples at the lost gardens of Heligan here in Cornwall.
That's the place i was thinking of, i need to visit one day. I think it worked out quite well, there are some modifications i'm going to make this year hopefully in the next couple of weeks. Here's the follow up, i planted directly intoo it and it's did quite well ua-cam.com/video/qzcggsmymYA/v-deo.html
Looks like a good job there.
Thanks Mickey
This is just like doing deep litter in the chicken coop over the winter! Keeps them warm.
I was thinking of moving them into the greenhouse for winter but then figured they'd just destroy everything
Great video and talk through, thank you 👍🤓🏴
Glad you enjoyed it, i just uploaded this year's update with a few changes
Great idea, Thank you 🙏 👏👏
Thanks for a great show-and-tell on your Hotbed! I wonder what kind of manure you used? Thanks!
Hi Katherine, it was horse manure
AsSalam Alaikum, I just Subscribed to your tube vids. You honor the world in sharing this craft and inspiration, especially honors Allah. Follower of Isa honoring Allah.
I love the idea of a hot bed, but I don't have the space for them, but I have starting to build some raise veg planters on legs do you think I can get make them in the planters
Thank you, learning so much from you.
You are so welcome!
I did not have Molasses in one of your compost recipes. I did take crystalized honey, added water to the container, put in a pot of water to warm up and liquify the honey. Let it cool and added to my compost bin and worm composter. The worms loved the treat.
Loved it mate.
I would love to have the space to really make good compost and have a small greenhouse.
We lived in a terraced house for most of our lives with no garden, we only recently moved here. I hope you get your dream garden
Great idea!!! Thank you for sharing!!!
Hi. Thank you, very good idea. Greetz from Ger
