Hi, I've added the Japanese subtitles. Please approve and publish it!
Yeah, I felt the same. I think that every Japanse word consists of vowel sound, English is not, that's why it sounds differently. And SU's singing style fits better with Japanse IMO. Her English skill improved a lot though.

8:09はコーラスラインの英語歌詞を聞き取って『今のは“One day I'm happy, one day I'm a mess (いい日もあれば、めちゃくちゃな日もある)”かしら?

I think the songwriters got together and said “How can we make a BM version of Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’?” The result is ‘Elevator Girl’. 😐

It's exotic aspiration. What Lyrics means don't matter but sounding cool is important.

I'm with you on this, Callie. This is almost like some oversimplified-lyrics remix version. I think it's an unwise move. I'm starting to wonder if they thought we were all just too stupid to deal with the original lyrics on this one, or something like that. O.o
They should know full well that they don't have to do a bunch of pandering to us with English lyrics (especially if they're going to change the meaning). I thought _The One_ was a demonstration that they did understand that the language barrier wasn't really a problem.

それなら、MAN WITH A MISSIONや、ONE OK ROCKのように曲を作ればいいと思います。

I love that we got a video with those killer stage effects, but yeah, they really don't need to dumb the songs down.
And Mikiko's choreography refers to some lyrics that don't appear in this version, which is weird.
Still sounds very much like Su to me, even with the heavy treatment.
I'd love to have an ultimate version with this music, the echo effects, and the Japanese lyrics.
Still, if this gets airplay in the States, that would be pretty great.
Kano again as featured Avenger. She must be ridiculously happy.
And Moa always has the perfect expressions.

While I don't necessarily hate it, I think they went way overboard with it in a rather pointless way. The video, however, is very cool. :)
If they're going after a lot of US mainstream airplay, I think they are very much barking up the wrong tree (and a bit of a dead tree).

I'm glad I bought the original version on iTunes (I mostly use Spotify as well but I just loved it THAT much) but when the English version came out, I actually did not find much fault with it! It was interesting, had a bit of fun figuring out the English lyrics, and once I did, I thought the song definitely became more "pop" - it made me think of Taylor Swift and I felt like it could attract pop music listeners. I just wished they would've made a lyric video instead, so that we could understand right away what she is singing and also support their promotions. Maybe I'm able to perceive it this way bc I haven't been following BM super closely but I think that goes to show that this version can and will appeal to new listeners :)
Btw, she IS singing "One day I'm happy, one day I'm a mess" which I love singing along to bc #relatable .

I do hope they continue to sing mostly in Japanese, even though I understand very little. I get the feeling that this was done to achieve more radio airplay/TV coverage ahead of the U.S tour and bring people to the shows who might have been put off going to see a band singing in anything other than English (don't ask me why that would be, it never did Rammstein any harm).

I honestly thought this version was horrible when I first heard it. The weird lack of flow in the chorus. Putting chipmunk affects on Su's voice. Why in God's name would anyone mess with a voice that good?? After i listened to it about 2 or 3 or 500 times I am used to it now so it sounds better. Still liking the Japanese version a LOT better and am still annoyed at the weird tendency to alter her voice in studio versions.

Always enjoy watching your reactions! The English version sounds not bad, but I
also feel more ordinary/boring compared with the original Japanese ones. The
Japanese chorus lines are much visual/descriptive, along with Mikiko-Metal’s
genius choreography, we native Japanese can clearly imagine the needle-floored
hell where we have to crawl around, to where we may go down when we chose a hard way in life. And the three beats knocking the door choreo (please open this door and get me out of here!) just matches the corresponding Japanese line "Tsugi wa Jigoku ni Tomari masu" (Next stops in hell). The original English/Japanese mixed version, I think, is more diverse/versatile for us in projecting ones’ feelings onto the lyrics of this excellent song.

The elevator effects are definitely super cool but this song would be a great opportunity to be their first anime music video. I can see it starting out with the girls boarding a normal looking elevator, Sue presses a button, doors close, Fox God flashes and suddenly the walls disappear - they start falling fast through time and space! They finally land on a stage with the whole band in outer space (Mikio cameo) with all the planets orbiting the background. A galactic fire monster appears and this time Su tells the monster "you're going dddddown - an epic fight takes place during the instrumental solo. Girls win, smile, and go back to performing for the universe. Everyone from all the planets come out to hear them now that it's safe from the galactic fire monster. They keep playing until they warp back up into the elevator from the beginning and get off.

Like most everybody here, I prefer the original Japanese version since that chorus is arguably the catchiest thing I've heard all year. I appreciate them going to the trouble of reaching out to international fans with this version, of course. They managed to find a translation that fits the vocal pattern of the original, but to me the original version is still the tops. I'm none too keen on the video itself because you never get a good look at the girls doing their thing due to all those effects getting in the way, which is part of their appeal (watching their dance moves). Nice try on their part, again, and YES, "Pa Pa Ya" is just amazing!

A dude on reddit swapped the audio back to the Japanese version if this bugs some people. Just look for the channel "Snarky Metal"
Koba has always over-produced the album versions. The album version of Shanti, from the 30 second clip, sounds really disappointing because they turned the guitars waaaay down. And they use computer drums for the album versions...it's just how they do it. Doesn't bother me much, I just grab FLAC's off of blu ray live performances of the songs I like if the album version isn't doing it for me.

  • @MyLordACTart
    @MyLordACTart 5 років тому

I think you have very sensitive ears.
What you felt unnatural about English version might be a cause of Kotodama(Koto=> "word", dama=> "soul" ) inside of Japanese word.
From ancient time, it's said each word has a soul in Japan.
And they said about our country,
"Nation which has the happiness of Kotodama floating here and there."
This is the way of Japanese Shinto's thought.
Most of the pronunciation of Japanese is constructed by clear vowels. And it has been thought the sound of vowels has a secret, and it causes the various phenomenon.
Since Japan's lose of WW2, Shinto dares to be categorized one of religion by force of GHQ, though it was a basic back-bone from the beginning of Japan. And Norito which is almost constructed by vowel has an important meaning on Shinto to make something like a natural power for people.
Like by above, when Su-metal sings in Japanese, every audience might feel something like some power.
And of course, Su-metal's great voice makes Kotodama epic.
    thanx!!

Would you consider doing reactions to other Bands? My two suggestions would be. The Regrettes & Band-Maid both did the recent Summersonic festival in Japan. Also, Babymetal was my gateway to first hearing about Band-Maid. No problem if they are not your thing.

Pretty obvious why they did that, to make it more radio friendly, but I don't dislike this version at all, probably too much effects in her voice, most likely it will sound way better if she sings it live, though probably they'll stick with the Japanese one.

After getting used to the cadence change in the chorus, I have come to enjoy the English version more. I kind of thought in the Japanese version the chorus seems rushed, like she is trying to cram too many words into it.

Once something is ingrained in your head, a devation from it will never sound as good. Its a learned thing. Also when you speak a different language your voice pitch/intonation will be different between the languages.

Mmmmm, a bit rubbish is a fair comment. What a shame we couldn't have this video with the original live singing in Japanese. I think the UK release of Metal Galaxy has the English version? As you say though, it is a way to get more people to understand BabyMetal :-)

      @rickwagner- 5 років тому

@Glynthepin Yes, the international versions of Metal Galaxy will have the English version, the Japanese versions will have the original mixed track. There are also two additional tracks included with the Japanese versions of the album.
