Took me back to the days I was a health inspector. What is required in a restaurant to sanitize dishes in a 3 compartment sink is bleach 50 parts per million. That is 1 tsp per gallon. Luke warm water because hot water causes it to gas off. The strength you mentioned for disinfecting would eat your hands up! So if you don’t have gloves don’t even try it. Plus your hands will smell like bleach for hours. If you’re sanitizing with bleach change your water frequently. Organic materials bind with the bleach and inactivate it. There are some other agents you can use like quaternary ammonium compounds that do a good job and don’t ruin your clothes and wreck your hands.
Just some thoughts here... Clean, daily. Sanitize, weekly. Disinfect, monthly. Thats a general guideline for the average household. If you or someone in your house has special medical needs adjust. Always, always sanitize and disinfect in a well ventilated place. Use a fan for small areas. Bathrooms and kitchens are the main places so extra care is needed there. Vinegar is a great alternative and works well on most surfaces but test to make sure it does not stain. Vinegar is also great at getting rid of mold. And here is the U.S. we have a ton of black mold especially in the north and northwest states. If the smell gets to you put a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball and place on a saucer in that room. Better and safer than a scented candle and no nasty wax smoke or spills to deal with. Also when disinfecting remember to wash surfaces, especially in the kitchen, with warm soapy water after. You really do not want to use a counter top that still has bleach water residue all over it. Stay safe everyone
Well said Leisa, absolutely right on the money. Been saying that for years. Bleach, regular household bleach, and yes unscented. For some reason they sell the scented bleach cheaper, who would have thunk...
Hi Leisa, wonderful video full of knowledge for disinfecting and sanitizing. Very interesting and wonderful to be informed. You take care both of you and be safe. 🌹🌹
Just want to Thank You for helping me to be prepared for things going on today by teaching me to can. You and a few others I owe my thanks to. God bless and stay safe/
Leisa, I always feel a bit scared when I watch your videos because you look so much like my Matron at the hospital where I work. 🤣 She's very fierce and we're all frightened of her. 😁
DOSE ANYONE REMOVE THEIR TOILET SEAT WHEN THEY CLEAN THEIR TOILET? WELL MY SISTER DOES . SHE SAID THAT WHEN MEN USE THE TOILET THEY STAND UP AND THERE IS NO WAY SHE IS GOING TO TRUST IT NOT BEING CLEAN.
I use isopropyl alcohol on my kitchen counters because it is not damaging to granite like bleach and other chemicals. I do use bleach in other parts of my home and for my kitchen sink though.
@@margaretbedwell58 Not sure about but I would say dilute it just a bit. My great grandmother had wooden counter tops and used Vodka. Seemed to do the trick lol.
Although it may be a more environmentally friendly cleaning solution than many other products, ammonia is not registered as a disinfectant by the EPA. Ammonia might kill salmonella and E. coli, but it is not an effective defense against dangerous staphylococcus bacteria.
Is an anti bacterial cleaner also work as an antiviral? I always thought people were spinning their wheels spraying antibacterial all over and immediately wiping. Most folks spray and wipe.
Antibacterial soaps are no more effective than regular soap and water for killing disease-causing germs, according to the CDC. Regular soap tends to be less expensive than antibacterial soap and hand sanitizers. Regular soap won't kill healthy bacteria on the skin's surface.
Leisa have you read anything about how the steam cleaners work on this virus. I can't find any information on it . I have a small steamer I use in the bathroom and kitchen but I also have a commercial steam cleaner you can use on furniture, floors . You can clean a whole room at a time . I would like to use the steam if it would work. You and Phil take care and God bless !
Water. More precisely, saturated water steam, which is called dry steam at 120°C and above. ... Used under pressure, the steam acts like a natural disinfectant and degreaser. It kills germs and bacteria, dissolves grease and oil, cleanses thoroughly.
I have a nice steamer too and haven't used it for some reason. I am going to get it out now. Because the cost of those store bought cloths is adding up. It is deadly steam(will immediately seriously burn your skin) - so I used my steam dryer for bathroom and kitchen back when I had a lot more energy. Mine takes some time to set up and heat water. I USE my STEAM DRYER to do all of my pillow throws and covers at least once a month. Saves the washing and deterioration of these items and not only removes any dust, but kills any germs that might have found their way to them. Oh, and all my teddy bears - when people learned that I was not allowed to have stuffed animals as a child due to allergies - they started gifting me stuffed things - I have so many. I gave up and put many in nice containers, but keep some out. :-) m. BEST THING TO DO is keep all humans and pets at the back door until they are stripped and everything in the washer - no shoes in the house and clean clothes as often as necessary - hard to do with pets.
The link Leisa listed to the CDC says you can use it if it’s at least 70%. The trick is keeping the surface wet for a few minutes, since it tends to evaporate quickly.
Remember this after this crisis is over..... the other side of the equation is when you are killing the bad bacteria you are also killing the beneficial bacteria. Good luck everyone
Most places I have been are out of them cleaning things so I take a small spray bottle of bleach and water and paper towels with me in a baggie yes people look at me funny but I have a one year old grandson at home that don't need me bringing anything back home if possible
Good information - thank you for doing the research for us. I never knew how much clorox to put in and I tend to use it straight :-). Better dead Bugs!

Looks like you'll need to disinfect your table with the cat making it's home on it! Thank you, Leisa, for the distinctions.

Great information Leisa! Very helpful! Thank you.
Chlorine evaporates, that's why warm not hot water, also, best to mix up fresh each time you use it

Thank you Liesa, you always have such great info. Wish I could just copy that brain of yours and keep it handy when I want to know something.
Thanks, Leisa. I also thought they were pretty much the same thing. Appreciate the clarification. 😀
Thanks, Leisa. Excellent information...especially timely. :-D
What a timely video!!! Thank you so much!
Thanks Leisa for the research and information.
Great video!
Thank you for the information.
This is an outstanding video. Thank you for doing the research for us.
I’ve always used bleach with water in a spray bottle for cleaning. It’s cost effective as well. Thanks for sharing.

Hahahaha I'm super nice unless given a reason not to be. Then.............
A compound that would bind with bleach and inactivate it is soap!!!
Great video! I didnt know there was a difference in the two.
Thank you Leisa.

D O we need too let the bleach water dry like we do with Lysol spray or can we wipe it dry?
Let it dry, longer contact time ensures killing more bad guys.
J Kid thanks.
What about isopropyl alcohol?

Disinfection does NOT kill everything to do that you would need a sterilant
