- On 20 July 2018 around 21:50 local time, ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst welcomed the legendary electronic band Kraftwerk and 7500 visitors to the Jazz Open Festival on Stuttgart's Schlossplatz - live from the International Space Station, where he will live and work until mid-December 2018. During the call with space, Kraftwerk founding member Ralf Hütter and Alexander played a special duet version of the track Spacelab, for which Alexander had a tablet computer configured with virtual synthesizers on board. So begrüßte ESA-Astronaut Alexander Gerst am 20. Juli 2018 um 21:50 Uhr Ortszeit die legendären Elektro-Pioniere Kraftwerk sowie 7500 Besucherinnen und Besucher des Jazz Open-Festivals auf dem Stuttgarter Schlossplatz - und zwar live von der Internationalen Raumstation ISS, auf der er noch bis Mitte Dezember 2018 lebt und arbeitet.
Kraftwerk-Gründungsmitglied Ralf Hütter und Alexander Gerst spielten eine spezielle Version des Tracks Spacelab im Duett an, für das Gerst eigens einen mit virtuellen Synthesizern konfigurierten Tablet-Computer an Bord hatte.

Live at Manchester Velodrome was pretty cool, with the British team doing circuits to Tour de France ... but I have to agree this tops even that ! Amazing !

Well, they did what J M Jarre planned to do during his -86 Houston Concert. One of the astronauts aboard the spaceshuttle Challenger was an avid saxophonist named Ron McNair, and he was supposed to play live "up there" alongside JMJ down in Houston. We all know what happened to Challenger. Instead we got to hear a piece called Ron's Piece introduced by the then president Ronald Reagan live.
I have been at the KRAFTWERK concert in Stuttgart yesterday. When starting the setting for the song "Spacelab" suddenly the video screen switched to the live view at ISS and AstroAlex was speaking to us and performing synthie sequences and parts of that track on his iPad. Live. From space. With no delay. This is by far the most amazing moment I have ever witnessed in my life. The fact that he his from our region and very familiar to Stuttgart / South-West Germany and the people from there makes this moment even more intense. Magic Moment. Thank you KRAFTWERK. Danke, Alex!

Ich gebe zu, dass mich dieser Klip regelrecht gerührt hat. Wie können wir Menschen so viele Kriege führen, wenn wir auch so viel gutes tun können wie z.B. Musik spielen zusammen mit einem Menschen, der sich im All befindet. Alle sollten sich dies anschauen und einsehen, dass wir alle im Frieden leben sollen! Viva Kraftwerk!
Fünf Jahre später sitze ich nun hier und hatte die beinahe gleichen Gedanken und Gefühle (Die Welt ist, wie wir alle wissen, nicht gerade ein besserer Ort geworden...). Und dann stolpere ich über diesen Kommentar. Gut zu wissen, dass man nicht immer alleine ist.

What a surprise last friday at Schlossplatz. First I was wondering a bit, why the band seemed to be a little bit restlessly at the beginning of "Spacelab", in opposite to standing cool behind their desks during the whole concert. Meanwhile we all know, they were waiting for our astronaute being on air soon. Thanks so much ESA, Kraftwerk and Alexander Gerst for this goosebump moment and unforgettable concert here in Stuttgart!

Herr Gerst hat auch die ganze Erde begrüßt, agabee, ich glaube gerade Du verstehst etwas aus der Botschaft gar nicht.... Mir tut es wahnsinnig Leid solche Kommentare zu lesen, während ich durch diese Aktion gestrern Tränen in Augen gekriegt habe.

Л.С. Мото Ja, aber mit Wissenschaft machen viele der umsatzbringenden Unternehmen in Deutschland keinen Gewinn. (Was aber nichts an der Tatsache ändert, dass man nicht in Kriegsmaschinen investieren sollte, sondern wie gesagt das Geld der Forschung zur Verfügung stellen sollte.
Vorsicht mit dem Begriff "Gutmensch" ..Jeder "normale" Mensch sollte sich momentan des öfteren als Gutmensch getriggert fühlen. Was ich halt nicht verstehe, warum das eine (z.B. Raumfahrt) mit dem anderen (z.B. Humanitären Katastrophen) ausgespielt wird. Warum sollte das eine das andere ausschließen? Zumal man sich nur die finanziell Fakten anschauen muss... naja nix für ungut :-)

I wish I was there at that concert. This is honestly one of the coolest things I’ve seen. I mean, you know you have made amazing technological advances when you are able to play live with an astronaut hundreds of miles above you.

Still I get my eves wet after the speech of Alex. As human mankind we should not tolerate destructive behavior of some few egomaniac individuals anymore!

Das war schlichtweg atemberaubend...diese Dinge einmal in diesem Kontext zu sehen...unterstrichen durch die Musik und Livebilder...ist in jeder Hinsicht ein Hingucker und die Botschaft von Gerst ist auch nicht ohne ! Cool! J.M.Jarre did something like that with the Space Shuttle, Vangelis created the music for the Rosetta mission and now Kraftwerk joins ISS. Finally the three greatest musicians of electronic music part of a space mission. Good look to Alexander Gerst.

Wen ich ein kleine bemerkung hinzufugen darf; es gent halt nach meinem geschmack: Kraftwerk in the bottom lower third calls to my mind the original Mystery Science Theatre 3000 crew; Joel Hodgson, Tom Servo, Crow, and Gypsy. Of course their silhouettes a bit more to the right of the screen. And the end theme music, Love Theme from Mystery Science Theatre 3000, divine! But still, Kraftwerk and Gerst---der Hammer!

Two of my passions: Kraftwerk and outer space travel/astronauts. It's amazing that Alexander Gerst was able to do this for a hometown crowd and his participation even beat the epic localized 3D parts of the performance. Now I'm kicking myself for not having pursued a career as an astronaut!
