    While this is pretty much correct, the terminology is a bit odd and it doesn't emphasize enough that this is really separated in a high pressure and a low pressure side (for example the water returning to the absorber needs to pass through a valve to make sure that the high pressure from the "generator" doesn't leak back into the low pressure side any more than is needed to move the water). The function of the water is to make getting the ammonia back to the high pressure side easier/possible (pumping an aqueous solution from low to high pressure is easier than compressing ammonia gas both energetically and practically). It also misses that the absorber acts as a heat sink and will need dump the heat from dissolving the ammonia, an exothermic reaction, because the cooler the water, the more ammonia it can dissolve.
    I'm not really sure, the names are odd to me, but it sounds a lot like the "analyzer" and " generator" is just a reflux distillation. I'm not sure what the "rectifier" is either, though it sounds like and extension of the reflux part of the distillation (also, why return the cooled ammonia-depleted water to the "generator" and not the absorber?). I'm not sure how the water that is getting returned to the absorber is getting separated from the ammonia at the bottom of the "generator". It may just be a simplification of draining the remaining water after most of the ammonia has boiled off. If so, then the "generator"/absorber would need to work in cycles and not continuously. In which case a system would need to be sized to run a single long cycle during the daylight hours to make maximal use of the solar energy. To use this as a system to actively cool things down during the same hours that the "generator" is working you would almost have to add additional storage for ammonia depleted water and high pressure liquid ammonia.

    • @siggyincr7447
      @siggyincr7447 Рік тому

      Rewatching this, it does seem that the "generator", analyzer and rectifier is just a reflux distillation with the reflux being collected and sent back to the absorber. This could be done continuously. Though I think large efficiency gains could be achieved by running this on a daily cycle and using storage tanks for the water and ammonia. This way you could have cooling capacity even when there isn't any solar input and you wouldn't have to continually pump the liquid into a pressurized generator but rather pump the ammonia enriched water at night when the "generator" can be cooled down and equalized for pressure.

    Thank you this is great content. I have some questions, however.
    Is the pump turned on by the solar energy supplied at the generator or electricity? What is the nature of that solar energy? Is it electricity produced by a photovoltaic panel? Or it is merely solar radiation?

    • @tomcantrell5553
      @tomcantrell5553 3 роки тому +2

      The solar energy to the "generator" is in the form of heat. This can be a simple tube coiled inside an insulated box . A Low E window allows light to come in and keeps the heat from escaping. It will heat up like a car sitting in the sun. Only 50-60deg C is needed.
      The pump will need to have electricity from either the power grid or a photovoltaic cells and battery system. However, the power needed to pump the ammonia-water solution is very small compared to what a normal AC unit will use.
      Most of the power to do the cooling will be from the solar heat.

      From my understanding solar energy is used for both driving the motor through a PV cell, and for the heating up the so-called generator which causes the ammonia water mixture to evaporate where I can be separated and sent down it's respective routes

    • @tomcantrell5553

      The water absorbs the ammonia. In a way it acts sort of like a compressor. It turns ammonia vapors into liquid ammonia in solution with water.
      The power to pump a liquid is far less than the power required to pump a vapor to the same pressure. This is because liquids do not compress like vapors do. This is a HUGE energy saver.
      The largest power consumer in a conventional air conditioner is the compressor. It is used to convert the refrigerant back into a liquid (after passing through the condenser). In this system that is done with water. Here, the largest consumer of power that which is used to separate the ammonia from the water (in the analyzer/generator vessel)...but that is FREE solar heat !
