They say there is a sense of grief once you find out you have it. You grieve for the person you realize could have been if you had known earlier. So most of the initial parts of ADHD as an adult is going through your own grief before you get to the other side.

The most heartbreaking part of having ADHD is that people who aren’t experiencing this think we are just using it as an excuse.
My sister always tries to normalise it by saying “everyone struggles with that, no one wants to do housework “ etc etc .. this is just minimising our struggles and makes me so upset 😭

You’re not alone… I have the same problem. Unfortunately ADHD is a “illness” of this generation (in the sense of it wasn’t much known say 20yrs ago) so most people do not understand what it entails and that you’re not just… lazy.

GED (also known as High School Equivalency Diploma) is considered the equivalent to a High school diploma. Which is why you can go to college and get a job with it. That exam is not easy and it is still an accomplishment to be proud of. So you do have a diploma and congratulations on your achievement (s) and success

I went through school with dyslexia without knowing it. I thought I hated reading but really it was hard for me just to get through a paragraph because of dyslexia. I really hate that grades are what determine your intelligence in school. I wish there were other ways to encourage kids/people in general that they were enough, and encourage them in what they excel in naturally.

Jeannie, you are proof that we don't need the "typical" high school and college experience to make it. You are doing better than most w/ degrees. But as someone who can relate to not finishing things in the expected timeframe, try to go back and take the GED exam so that isn't hanging over your head. And I say that b/c your teared up when you mentioned not finishing, which usually means you have deep regret over it. Go ahead& knock out the exam b/c you can do it & it will no longer be an unturned stone in your life. Best wishes!🥰

Because if you really got it, you know whats up. We know what you're talking about. From frustration (and literal anger), to forgetfulness, to literally staring at the periodic table with tears because your brain doesn't know wtf its looking at. The girls that get it, get it. I'd LOVE some more mom-ing with adhd content from you because im genuinely terrified, something tells me you could once relate to the fear

I’m a school teacher so I’ve seen ADHD but what I have is different and it’s funny because according to my counselor it can manifest differently in women and that’s why many women are misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder because for women it affects our emotions more! Same. Diagnosed in my mid-40s. It can be a real emotional rollercoaster! It explains so much about your past, and feels so validating to know that there are reasons for things that always seemed so unexplainable. Also, it’s AMAZING having access to a new community of people who truly “get” how your brain works…not to mention all of the new techniques you can learn that work with your brain instead of against it.
Still, even with all of those benefits, there can be a lot of emotional ups and downs associated with incorporating your diagnosis into your identity. Give yourself grace!
I absolutely recommend the UA-cam channel How to ADHD. Game-changer!!!
Also, I would look into what’s called “2E.” It stands for “Twice Exceptional.” It’s when you have two things which require support, but the symptoms cloud each other so you don’t get support for either. Most often, it’s giftedness and a learning disability. That’s what it is for me, and for you as well. It’s a whole new layer of complication! 😂 Fun!
Lastly, since ADHD is hugely influenced by hormones…buckle up for perimenopause! 😅
    Love you!!!!

Hey, Jeannie. I wanted to say that this video popped up on my feed late and I've always followed you for the longest time. Ever since I have been following you, since your How Do I Look days when I was in high school... To The Real... to now... Somewhere in my heart, I always knew you were a neurodivergent person. I was also diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and it finally made sense to me about all the things I went through and were happening to me.
I relate to everything that you have said in this video. What you're describing about yourself shows me that you're "twice exceptional" and what that means is that, you're both gifted and neurodivergent/disabled at the same time. (Note: ADHD can be a disability for some people depending on how intense it is) Being twice exceptional doesn't mean your problems are invalidated for being gifted and just because you're neurodivergent, doesn't mean you can't be gifted. Just because someone is having some issues, doesn't mean that they're incompetent. We are not incompetent, we just have different brain formations and our brains work differently compared to people who do not have ADHD or neurodivergent brains. People always assume that we are incompetent because of the things we go through.
And to answer the thing about how you don't wanna use your ADHD as an excuse. Here's what I wanna say, we're not using it as an excuse. We have been living in a world where everyone is neurotypical and people put that pressure on us to be up to that standards. There has been research studies that show some people are also night people and some are morning people. Doesn't mean someone who doesn't wake up early at 5am to work is lazy. You can be just as productive at 6pm as people who are productive at 6am. The same with ADHD. We are not using it as an excuse, it's just that now more and more experts and therapists and doctors AND people with ADHD, are spreading awareness and knowledge about the struggles with ADHD. We have to now teach others how to interact and socialise with us, embrace our differences rather than us having to accommodate to their neurotypical standards. This is really important.
I wanna say, this video from a person I truly admire and look up to, makes me happy. I have always had depression, anxiety and sometimes I even have anger management issues. I'm even on medication now. And some of those issues were made worse because of my ADHD, not directly but because I wasn't able to perform the way people wanted me to perform. I want to say to you and everyone else who are struggling, there's no shame with having issues. There's no shame with having to take medication. There's no shame with getting help. It's completely fine to embrace negativity sometimes, especially as someone with ADHD we're so used to just forgetting our problems and not addressing them. It's totally fine. We are human, we have to help others understand us. We are not defects, we are just different.

I have been recently diagnosed with ADHD and being able to have the realization makes me think about how I was growing up. I never struggled with school, but I really struggle when it comes to maintaining relationships because it is very hard for someone without ADHD to understand they way your mind works. People just think that we’re quirky or we just don’t know how to pay attention, but it’s so much more. ADHD also effects emotional regulation, I have had so many time where I have freaked out and kind of lost it. Looking back now I realize it wasn’t because I was being a brat, I just wasn’t able to communicate my feelings and also understand my emotions. There’s so much to say about ADHD and especially ADHD in women. I’m so glad that there are so many of us that can relate :)

I love this vid. Jeannie you’re so passionate about talking about your condition and you explain it so well I fully understood it, in Jeannie Mai Jenkins terms. I work with children and people with ADHD and it’s wonderful you use all your assets in a great way and one of the best talk show hosts ever and so real and genuine and I think don’t people are real as you in the UK. Keep thriving and being your best self and you own it before they do.

I want to thank you for sharing your story because every thing you described with your experience on ADHD I feel on a daily and I'm also a wife and a mother and it's hard because I feel so alone. No one really talks about ADHD and the struggles of it but you made me feel like I'm not alone anymore. I hope and pray that I gain the confidence that you have and be able to live in my truth with it so THANK YOU... 🥰😍😘

Really hard to focus, like I wrote an exam recently and I couldn’t focus to read the passage, my mind was everywhere and this made me hate reading. Thank you so much as this was helpful maybe someday I will know if or not I have it. My forgetfulness is on another level, let alone my anger. Thank you Jeannie

FIRST COMMENT!!! Another inspirational episode from an inspirational person (I'm talking about YOU Jeannie)! I remember you mentioning in the Reading My Old Diary episode that you have ADHD also. And I ain't even gon front... I got kinda emotional listening to you tell your story on how you found out you have ADHD & how you're dealing with it today. Even the part when you said you didn't graduate high school, that part hit me too. And I got emotional (not crying tho) bcuz I be thinking the same thing whenever I see you on my phone or on my TV screen, I be thinking "MAN... Jeannie got it made! She's living her best life, married to the man of her dreams, got a beautiful daughter, beautiful family, she got people in her life who love her & support her, she constantly stays working, she's not involved in no controversial BS, she has no worries & everything's all good & perfect in her life." But in reality... you just never know what a person's going through behind the scenes & how they're dealing with it or if they're even dealing with it at all. It's like when you see certain people & it seems like they're the happiest person in the world, but in reality they got this secret invisible dark cloud over their head following them everywhere they go. And I feel like I need to start being more mindful of that whenever I see those certain people. So thank you Jeannie for inspiring me once again & sharing your ADHD story with us & letting people know that they're not alone in the ADHD community. And Imma ALWAYS be right here by your side now until the end! I luv you Jeannie Mai-Jenkins!!! 💚💚💚

My 31 year old niece was diagnosed with ADHD. Her husband has Asperger‘s and their both on medication and he is an elementary school teacher. He teaches fifth and sixth grade boys and my niece got her degree in web design and worked for an organization called FIDF and so you can definitely do whatever you put your mind to anyone who has ADHD can do anything they put their minds to, including Jeannie Mia so don’t let the fact that you have ADHD stop you from achieving your goals in life like you’ve already done and continue and will continue to do so❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Jeannie, thank you so much for sharing this. I was hoping you would eventually. I think the biggest thing you need to know is all that you’re describing is referred to as Internalized Ableism. Also, I understand that unlike me who has had 20 years of experience to work through my internalized ableism (and still dealing through it!), you’re only at the start of it. I thank you for sharing this video. I really hope to make this into like a mini series because so much needs to be layered off from this. ❤❤ I’m here for you!!

omg thanks so much for sharing thiss! I love ur honesty and vulnerability. When u mention how to this day you can have episodes of forgetfulness, find it hard to fall asleep cuz restlesness/mind racing, etc... i just felt ... wow "Fatima, its okay to struggle with these things time to time. Dont be so hard on urself. Just like how jeannie Mai gets by and is THRIVING omggg, so can u."
and omg when u shared this adhd thing affects ur friendships, woahhhh. Sometimes, im labeled as being UNreliable and it makes me feel bad like woahhhh, how am i gonna sustain friendships? But its nice to see im not the only one. Im still hard on myself sometimes, its hard NOT to be, but im working on it.

i was just diagnosed with Adhd Innatentive type at 32 years old !! even though i wish i had known earlier i’m happy i finally have answers . i’ve read so much about adhd now and it’s crazy how taboo it still is and how most people just think of the Adhd hyperactive type!!! oh it just means you can’t focus or multi task . It’s so much more than that , people don’t think even realize how it can cause depression or anxiety and low dopamine levels. i’ve had a lot of people tell me adhd is made up and not real and it blows my mind . i also was thankfully properly diagnosed by an intense cognitive test
