Let me just say your videos are amazingly edited and I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into both your sheep and these videos. I am making a 10 minute presentation on out of season breeding of sheep and your clear instructions are very helpful. Hopefully my teacher likes it
Ok, so we have VERY different management styles, but it's still very helpful to me! All of this information comes up in my quest to become more knowledgeable, and it's great to put the method to a face - so to speak.
There’s part of me that’s a little jealous of this. dealing with those sheep look a whole lot easier than dealing with 1500 pound mama cows trying to protect her calf. But than I’d full well imagine it’s not easy as all that lol
We have almost entirely switched from cows to sheep, and in the handling aspect, yes it's amazing. Sheep come with their own challenges, but I'm able to handle them myself, I can pull and carry lambs without my husband having to help.
RoyalBlue4486 I can understand that. Had a calf that needed doctoring on pasture. He’d have been 200-250......,ish. the infrastructure needed to deal with that 1 ornery turd was kinda sad LOL
thanks Andrew! Editing is the part I really enjoy and the art I am always trying to improve on... So when someone notices, it means so much... thank you!!!
Very interesting videos. We are Australians joining 10,000 ewes for wool production. Our methods are very different, we muster only four times a year, drench only once as the dry weather reduces worm count to a minimum. Shear in January, 40 degree days are bad but long hours allow for about 4 hours of cool weather in morning and late afternoons. Our sheep are quite wild and do not carry the beautiful condition that yours do. Hope you get some holiday time....we don’t, lol.
You're a tough women 🤗 it's nice how much I learn when I'm watching your vids. I know how to handle cows, but with sheeps it's a completely different world ;)
Well, watched two years worth of video!! Hmmmm now do I wait and stockpile your videos and wait till fall to watch??? Lol. I’m just in awe at what you do and how well you do it. Do your kids like sheeping? Can’t wait to see what your summer brings!!
Awesome vlog. We don't cider because our flick is too small. But, I use the same type of record system, and evaluate my ewes like you do. I'm hoping I get a couple of ewe lambs bought tomorrow 4/6/19 at the sale. We are starting a new flock for Wyatt, our grandson. He currently owns two, two year old white face cross, and two white face cross yearlings. We will put them in with the Ram in August, after fair season, for January and February lambs. 👍🐏🐑
How many IU's of PMSG do you use on Out-of-season breeding groups? Do you increase that/decrease that for the single/twins/triplets they have had in the past to increase your multiples? How much PMSG do you use on regular breeding season - not out of season? Have you ever tried inducing with Dex? We CIDR and induce - but always looking at other people's protocols.
I hope that pulling the CIDRS went well today! I'm jealous that your sheep are kept inside... We had a day of torrential downpours and I don't know who was unhappier-- me or the animals.
All went well today! Got some footage and should have a video out this weekend! I do appreciate doing these jobs indoor... and rainy days are good reminders for me to be grateful of what I have. For sure!
Started at the beginning several days ago... not watching the new ones until I finish. It's hard. I keep wanting to tell you through the screen all the things you now do with warming and all.
If you ever have problems with fertility in the sheep. I would say breed them to a dorper and keep those ewe lambs because dorpers can be bred whenever and out of season as long as they don’t have a lamb they want to be bred because they are always very fertile
Maybe hot water with Dawn liquid dish soap the cider applicator in. It has B.M.. It may be in such a place it may cause infection. I realize my idea of clean is different than yours. Vehicles washed, but inside the dirt and dust remains indefinitely. The tablet, sorry the name I can not remember the name, but is so dirty with big spots on the screen which it would bother me so much I'd would have to clean it. Lol.

Hi Sandi I am Chris from South Africa I would like to know the paint you use to mark the ewes. What is that. The paint I know in cans will dry and not show that the ewe is mated. I must be like not drying So I would like to know what you use. Have nice day.
Thanks for sharing- may I ask about the one black sheep in your flock - Is it a certain breed or just something that happens 🤔 There is a saying I have heard for years that is "The black sheep of the Family/Flock" I enjoy your channel and look forward to each new Vlog 🇦🇺🐨🇦🇺🐨
We love the black sheep so much we developed an all-black flock many yrs ago. We worked on keeping the body wool as black as possible and initially culled for that trait. Since then we’ve introduced meat rams that only throw white so now we are slowly losing the blacks. We like using the black ones in our petting zoo operation cuz you don’t have to wash them as much lol. Nowadays we get a lot of spotted and shaded (tri-coloured) sheep.
This vlog is very old and this comment may get lost or missed but I know you still lube the cidars the same way still. I’m just thinking you should pour lube into a small tub and dip each one before inserting instead of squirting from the bottle. I’m sure it would save time.
My aunt had goats I was really close with them, they head butted others or were afraid of others , I would go out in the pasture with a females first and read or draw they didn't eat those things so I was lucky they would just lay there head on my lap or lay on my lap or just lay down next to me while I do those things, they let me pet them and feed them, when I sit out with the males they would do the same as the females but they would fight for me sometimes wich I thought was sweet but I still stopped them and the males tried to hurt everyone but me all because I would talk to them like a goat and I would also speak to them calmly and be near them calmly.

Hi I have a couple of questions I am new to this channel and I don't know anything about she so you put that thing inside them to keep them from breeding then when you go to breed you pull it out and you give him a shot to bring them into season is this right
I just started watching ur Channel. And for some reason I can't stop. What do u mean when u ship them? Where r they going? Sorry if it's a dumb question but I don't know anything about what you do.
Not a dumb question at all!!! They go to an auction barn where I ship my lambs also... There they get sold to buyers or farmers... For my cull ewes, I always mark with a big X so farmers aren't tempted to purchase them for breeding stock. They would typically be bought by buyers that go to sales and purchase on behalf of processors who sell to stores and shops in the Toronto area for meat.
Hey Kerry, there are some shipping regs that have to be followed like condition of lambs and ewes... and they are required by law to also have the RFID tag before they leave the farm.
Great question, and I will make sure to add that to the breeding video when I pull these CIDRS... I use 1 ram for every 5 ewes when I synchronize the flock.
Good question, these breeding drugs always confuse me... There are programs that are a bit different and use some of these different ones, but I won't begin to try to remember which is which!
I got a few questions can this be done at any month to lamb any month, does it only work with certain breeds and how much would it cost roughly per ewe to do this, thank you
I just had a sheep recently with a dead lamb that I had to pull. Would u advise checking all your sheep or just the ones that had a really small lamb. I don't know maybe it's hard on them and I should only check the ones that need it
Maybe it's like you do with cows. Check them if the babies are really small. Don't grab in them to often, it can cause infections. Check for the pink skin thing that's coming out after birth (I don't know the english word for it). If it's coming out, there might be no more Lamb. That's what I do. I also had a very tiny one this year, but this skin thing came out and there was no second Baby.
Sandi Brock do you DNA test or does it matter? We are going to be running 3 rams in separate groups this year, I'm making breeding lists right now. Probably half of my flock is registered, but I only run registered rams.

I never tried it. Will sheep breed in the spring without seeding? I just breed mine once a year I thought it wouldn't be so hard on my sheep. And I wouldn't have to call my ewes as quick
Yes, the sheep if left long enough will likely still cycle... Especially a breed known to have the ability to breed naturally out of season... and we still are really on the 'cusp' of the breeding season. Using the PMSG is what will boost my chance of the ewe cycling as I believe thats what makes them ovulate. The CIDR really just pulls the group tighter.
I am not a farmer but I really enjoy learning about new things. I am certain you use lube because you are a lady. Men farmers hardly even spit on their hand before palpitating a cow.
I think there must be a lot of stress in your flock the way you breed them. I would not be happy to give them such a factory farming life. The very fact that they are permanently crowded in and you say they get injured at tupping is an example. I am glad that when I was sheep farming , my sheep had some joy n their lives and were able to exhibit natural behaviours. By the way, your ewelambs are hard to sponge as they, like us, have hymen. If you need to breed out of season, why not use Poll Dorsets?

Great question! I talk about this in my latest video!
I could be wrong, but I’m thinking slaughter 😕

Yes, Kay is correct. I try to breed them to lamb every 9 months, but of course, sometimes they don't catch which pushes them back to a year...
