I agree with you about not washing hair often. That's also old school. My mother was a cosmetologist for nearly seventy years and she used to say that these new fangled folks are literally washing their hair out.
I only wash 3-4 times a year. Maybe an extra time for my birthday. And my hair has grown tremendously when I stopped using everything from when my locs were first started.
Honestly, barely. I oil my scalp and that's about it. When I curl my locs, I spritz them then. If I'm bored and want to clean my parts up, I'll throw a little water on them so I won't badly break my roots.
I went through a 5 year loc journey learning all the wrong things concerning my hair. I didn't learn much else during my 2nd loc journey. Now, I'm learning that less is truly more this time around! Thanks Yannie! 😊
All your videos are very informative, I Love your Honesty. My motto is learn to listen, listen to learn! Please keep up the excellent knowledge. GODSPEED!
Thank you Yannie. I have recently found you on UA-cam and I am so grateful for this. I must have been guided to you. I have started my loc journey 2 weeks ago and you have helped so much already. I love your energy and your honesty. Everything I thought I was doing right was wrong. God Bless you x
i love love love flaxseed gel. I make and sell my own. i'm glad i stopped using retwisting products bc companies like to switch up on you and once you read all the ingredients its too much.
Purchase an akaline water filter. You hair will be soft and extremely hydrated. In my faith, I need to my hair must be clean. 6 to 9 months would not be health for me. The alkaline filter reduces dry itchy skin, dandruff, eczema, and dramatically improves the condition of your skin, hair and nails. The filter removed chlorine, heavy metals, bacteria, pesticides, and inhibits the growth of scale, algae, fungi and mold The filter is on Amazon for $28.00. Get the filter and change your hair game.
preach sister, thank you so much for this truth, my journey has been conflicted looks healthy but clearly its not. Too much products, dying, and twisting, glad I found you.
Hi Yannie, you are the BEST that I've been listening and watching about Locs knowledge, when are you coming to WASHINGTON DC. for a session of great information to everyone about the TRUTH ON LOCS,
Thanks so much for taking the time. I'm seriously considering locs. So I'm doing research now before I fully commit. So far I believe my hair scalp and hair is healthy. I do use water from my well, rain water, and occasionally rose water. Since I'm here near Gainesville, FL and on a limited income I wanted to try to start my own locs. My routine is to wash my hair once a week with black castor oil soap bar and/or shea butter soap bar by Shea Moisture. While moisture organic extra virgin olive oil and shea butter. A few days ago when I washed my hair I did the same thing and added ECO styling gel with olive oil and twirled my hair.(coil I guess). I had a imagine of my hair being springy in sort of a corkscrew pattern. I know how realistic that is. Now that I have found you, I'm rethinking using the gel and to see what kind of journey my hair can go. Mainly prevented build-up from products and confusing my hair being unhealthy. My hair is somewhat soft. I don't usually take pictures and I know it's not same as touching it but I really want to make sure I'm on the right track/path. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I feel so affirmed. I've been a diy loose natural for years, too broke to be buyin name brand product. Besides shampoo & conditioner, I only use olive oil, coconut oil, peppermint EO, & tea tree EO. I did learn that I should be diluting more tho. My hair is 3 yrs old, collar bone length. Bout to start my locs tonight! Still deciding my parting :/
i wish I had not I cut off my lock they were very long. I am going to relock withn two weeks or so. thank you for your informative information for healthy locs.
I love all your vedoe Yanie. And although I just started 3 month ago. I had already went out and brought make Jamaican castor oil and although I use it yet because I waiting to get hair wash and after that. That when I going using the oil every once a week but after the wash I going to the oil in my hair and wear my nap cap while I sleep. And Yes I still getting hair twist at a hair shop. But I going to stop going to her once my hair get long enough ( maybe by my ears) and I going to start shampooing my hair for 5 to 6 months.
Wow guys i just subscribed and have now learnt from watching this that i have healthy dreads... i wash them once a month, i have never had them pulled and styled done crochet maybe 5 times in my 8 years of having dreads and my roots are full. Most my freinds and colleagues at work tell me to style and maintain and blah blah blah and i just ignore them and now because of watching your videos i know from examples youve given of healthy hair that mines good
so firstly....when are you coming home to TnT so I can get a session with you. I have similar problem with dry scalp. Also for us back home in this heat and I play sports so my hair gets smelly fast lol. How often should I wash. I try to limit it to 3 to 4 weeks
People, just go see a dermatologist and develop YOUR hair routine around what your situation is. Don’t go 6 months without washing if you’re having issues.
I don't know where else to ask this. I really really want to start locs but there is one thing I'm worried about. I know that it isn't good to put lots of product in your locs but I'm worried that my mom will force me to even when I'm in college. How should I do what I feel is right without starting any fights or becoming the spoiled angsty teen? Even when I graduate high school I will still live with my parents.
just tell her that it wouldn't be the healthy thing to do with your hair right now and that it will make your hair grow and turn out much better down the line by keeping it simple. She may give you dirty looks and call you out every so often but that is what moms do...at least mines does...if it is not one thing it will def be another.
I've been told I have scalp psoriasis and have been prescribed an oil to use before washing. I'd rather handle it naturally. In my area I can't find a dermatologist that im confident understands black hair textures and skin issues. I am learning so much from your video's. Just started locks 2 weeks ago. I'm worried about how I will be able to completely wash the flakes away. Any advise on washing it completely without totally ruining the locks?
@Yanniethelocologist I hope that this message finds you okay. I subscribed to your channel about 2 months ago. I'm not on Facebook, nor Twitter, nor Instagram. How do I free form ?so far I have a short Afro and have been cold water washing in a circle every morning I bought aloe Vera gel this morning and rubbed it through any tips for growing them I can't afford the shop
Trill Swim So, the thing about freeform locs is that you let them be free to form on their own. Try to leave it alone, even though it's tempting to mess with it. Keep your hair clean and moisturized. Let nature do the rest...really that simple. Best wishes on your journey ✊🏾
Trill Swim Well, Yannie is an expert locologist, and I am just a woman speaking from experience. I wash my hair no less than once a week, but Yannie recommends washing far less frequently. I trust in her wisdom, but I also say that you know yourself better than anyone. If you feel the need to wash, you should. If your activity level is high, you may need to wash more often, you know? Whatever you do, make sure that you stay as natural as possible, meaning stay away from shampoos with too many chemical ingredients. I am sooooo glad I came across this video. I have been wondering why my locs are soo dry. I am 9 months in and in the beginning it was not this dry. Yannie what about the water that is hard, what would be a good way to keep from having that hard water problem, it seems to have the hair dry and getting very thin,, Thank you for the share,,, blessings
I'm sorry. No one should go that long without washing their hair. That is plain unsanitary. There are pollutants in our environment, dead skin cells from our scalp, sweat etc on our hair and scalp no matter how careful we are.
Dee Drummond I'm going you respectfully disagree with your comment. Depending on a person's hair, because everyone is different, our bodies are pretty self cleaning. Their may be build up on everyone's scalp but that doesn't make it completely unsanitary, it's natural for your hair to do that.
Dee Drummond I personally wait 2 weeks before washing my hair because my hair breaks off when I wash it too often. while my friend has straight hair and she washes it everyday. :) everyone differs lol.
Umm... not really. Everyone has bacteria on their skin and scalp to help keep the negative ones away. If everyone was sterile, we would be very unwell very often. There is a mindset and haircare method that is called the sebum only. You don't wash your hair, you don't even add oil. If you do it right, and do it consistently, there is no smell to people's hair, it doesn't look oily (if someone has an oily scalp it can actually lessen oil production over time!). It practically cured my horrendously gross dry scalp and straw like hair ends. If you work in the beauty or hair industry, you'd have to protest this point, as the lie has been going on and on for decades. Wash your hair, repeat washing, add this, add that, do it daily, buy more of our product this way. When I did that (I tried pretty much every type of shampoo including 2 in 1's, and checked lathering twice, followed by conditioner... My hair looked like straw every time!).
+Syria__ No worries, and thankyou for your kind words. When I read your comment about how badly your hair responds to being washed, I could imagine how heart shattering that might be when you put effort and energy into growing your hair. (If you wanted no hair, you'd shave it and go bald right?!). I am guessing that your hair might be brittle (I kinda imagine what happens when you dip a flower in liquid nitrogen and then slam it down hard on a table!), so you might be needing more moisture to balance it out. However it also depends on the item you use to wash your hair (Is it soapnuts? Or apple cider vinegar? Or bicarbonate of soda/sodium bicarbonate? Or eggs? Or honey? Or is it a solid soap kinda thing like African black soap, or the weird pink ones that I've heard are super effective/possibly castile soap? Or is it dish washing liquid? Or is it classic everyday shampoo if so what type? clarifying, shine, soft, moisturising, for volume?). How many times do you put it on your scalp and make it foamy? Are you putting it on your scalp, or on your hair, or on both? How much of the cleaning agent are you using? Are you prediluting it or using it neat? Also, what else do you do in the shower, do you use that brush thing that is supposed to make the shampoo foam up better or quicker, and is supposed to be good for the scalp? How do you hold your hair when in the shower? How do you dry it? How long does it take for the entirety of your hair gets to 70 or 80% dry? What do you do after it is dry, or 'dry enough'? Do you cover your hair generally? (If so, with what and what is the bit that touches your head made of?). Do you 'protect' your hair when dry? What happens to your hair/where does it go, and how when you sleep? Is your hair in locs or loose strands? Do you use heat to style your hair at any point? Do you use dye of any sort or bleach in your hair? (If so, how often? What kind?). I am guessing the ends of your hair break off, is this correct, or is it anywhere? If it is at the ends of your hair, then can you recall what happened when that part grew? (were you happy/sad/stressed? drinking enough fluids? eating balanced meals regularly? were you pregnant? were you on medication (of any kind, however minor)? were you ill? if so, how ill... just a 24/48hr bug or was it a hospital stay? mental health counts as health as we all have a mental health. Some people's mental health is well, others has a mild headache, others flu, others at earth shattering levels of illness, mine currently has the equivalent of pneumonia and bronchitis but I'm being stubborn like my grandfather and not seeing a doc!! Hehe! Also, the mind is the thing that controls the entire body, and so if your control system is down then things won't run right, and chaos ensues!).
"soap and water can wash away everything but sin" LOL.
I'm trini and my grandma and great grandma used to say that too - "Soap and water washes away ANYTHING except sins" 💞

I need the measurements of the olive oil, coconut oil and tea tree oil
Shea Hinton half of each oil and 8-10 drops of tea tree

Hi Yannie
I have just taken up swimming and there does not seem to be any cap that protects my loss adequately, chlorine water always gets in. Therefore, I am having to wash every week whereas, I use wash 4- weekly. Please help
very informative...I workout abt 6 days a week and sweat really heavy. I don't wash but I do run my head under the shower. is that ok to do?
Gear Turner I need this answered too!
Gear Turner she said something about tap water is not good for lock perhaps u should use water bottle to clean the sweat out and rose water mixed with vitamine E to hydrates your lock.
I like Yannie, but I could never ever go 3 plus months without washing my hair. gross.
Curious&Classy Allday 2 weeks has been the longest I have gone without washing my hair. Now I wash once a week unless my scalp says it needs to be washed now!
When you dont put products o your hair it's not necessary to wash often. Unless u sweat in your head just use a wet cloth
I sweat in my head and have scalp psoriasis so it’s not an option.
How do you do hot oil treatments without washing your hair???
I want to see the picture that you're speaking of with the locs down to the ankles I checked your facebook but cannot find it

What about having water run down your hair when you are in the shower. Is that ok or no water unless you are washing it.
You can rinse and put water on your hair as much as you want. Locs love water. But your hair MUST be dry b4 you sleep or you will get mildew/mold
What about if i'm starting locs tho any tips on that

When I DO wash my hair, what should I use? Just plain water?
