The people of North Korea are effectively being held hostage by the regime. It's very good at what it does, which is why it has lasted so long. Any hint of rebellion leads to your entire extended family being sent to labour camps comparable to those set up by the Nazi's. Many North Koreans actually yearn for knowledge of the outside world, and there is huge demand for USB drives being smuggled in containing everything from Wiki articles to Kpop songs. They risk their lives and the lives of all their loved ones just to listen to BTS and Twice.
@@lukejackson1575 Good job summarizing all the Western media lies about DPRK. I know you can't wait to bring freedom to them like Iraq, Libya, Vietnam, and a hundred others, but if you're so concerned about human rights you should worry about the thousands of homeless people on the streets in the richest cities in America, while DPRK has zero.
This was amazing. I honestly didn't know that Koreans got down on the accordion. And, they are playing, "Take On Me!" Fuck yeah, North Korea! Let's do Accordion Diplomacy!
To be honest, I really enjoyed this rendition. It kind of makes me happy that this type of music exists in a really drab and oppressed world of the DPRK
Morten Traavik who filmed these people says says that this project "aims at the opening of minds over a divide of mutual suspicion, challenging established truths and prejudices about ourselves and each other." He has been successful in my case! The skills and beautiful playing of these five accordeon players are really heart-opening!
I think these kids are DEAR. Kids are kids everywhere. I hope these young people have a future where they have choices as to who they want to be and what they want to do. You go, kids. Enjoyed your song.
What amazes me is these people most certainly have no access to the internet. Which leads me to believe that a north korean high ranking state official with access to it uses its 23 million people as his personnal meme producing factory. I mean why waste five years to learn the accordion and play take on me when you can order five people to do it for you. To me that's beautiful.
Morten Traavik, a Norwegian artist who previously made the Internet gyrate when he released a clip of young North Korean accordion players performing A-ha’s 1984 hit, “Take On Me.” In 2012, Traavik met the musicians from the Kum Song Music School while traveling in North Korea. He told the BBC, “I lent them a CD of Take on Me on a Monday morning. By the following Wednesday morning they had mastered the song, with no annotation and no outside help. It showed incredible skill.” And, says Traavik, it all just goes to show, “you can have fun in North Korea.”
I've solved the problem! Accorcian Diplomacy, Weird Al, is the ambassador. Mexico, Germany and North Korea can all unite under this shared love. Music transcends bias. You're welcome, world.
True fact: Kim Jong il was the tallest person alive at 10 feet tall and was the only person to bowl a perfect game and score 54 on 18 holes within the hour
Wow, very talented players, and I'm amazed to learn they only took 2 days to adapt, write and memorize their version after hearing the song for the first time. Nice job guys!
wtf xD thats not what you want to get out of this its horrible sure the elite in pyongang is given privileges but they are still suffering being boxed by propaganda
gnarlyandy1 all it showed me was that the people of North Korea are human like everyone else. They yearn to be free, but they live under a Stalinist system where that is impossible to say. These type of totalitarian government are the worst, turning brother against brother trying to just save themselves, can't trust anyone, it's really horrible. But the people aren't the enemy, it is the government
In international news today... there have been reports that North Korea has aqcuired powerful and dangerous funny accordion novelty-song versions of '80s pop hits. Some experts speculate that this may spark a musical comedy arms race on the Korean peninsula. Lee Myun-Bak, president of South Korea, has issued a statement of reassurance: "We have no reason to fear their wacky versions of retro tunes. They possess nothing to match our hand-fart versions of the Culture Club oeuvre."
I give these kids a lot of credit for making the best of their situation. They’ve got obvious musical talent and the creativity to express it within what we can only assume are extremely strict and proctored guidelines. Keeping in mind, they probably don’t have access to contemporary music, and the music they get goes through many layers of scrutiny to ensure it doesn’t offend the “Dear Leader” and his regime.

You have to admit, they're pretty awesome...
And unexpected
Little known fact: Take On Me was actually written by the Dear Leader during his infamous 1980's synth phase.
blueshirttail OK - nearly fell out of my chair laughing at this one.
ow. my gut. and my cheeks.
Synth phase? He himself invented the synthesizer and all modern music, but America stole his ideas and took credit for them.
Little known by western pigs only
Kofi Graves otherwise it would be treason of North Korea for playing a Western, luckily they invented them all
Doc: You have 1 minute and 31 seconds to live, you like music so what would you like to hear?
Me:
Larry Rhoden Doc: you have 1 minute and 31 seconds to live, what is your dying wish
Me: kill everyone that constantly uses this unoriginal comment
Not that this isn't objectively hilarious, but they are insanely talented and that sound is just phenomenal. Beat that, every other country
Shut up North Korean

Even if many are stating the opposite, Northern Korean people seem to be humans, too! ;)
Yes apparently, they are only 5 people left in north korea. All the others have muted into squids or are metamphetamine junkies
So. People are all.
I think most people with two brain cells to click together are aware of that fact. It's only their leaders we have reason to doubt the humanity of.

The video upload started around 1988, finished Feb 1st, 2012.
The heavy metal of North Korea.
Is in their food.
That would be their tanks

Wait... you guys get youtube over there? 🤣 thought there was only rice and death.
I just paused John Oliver's last week tonight to check this out.
I said to myself, "I gotta get me some of that action!".
Literally same.
i thought i was the only one!
same
That's actually the same thing I did lol
Ahhh the most traditional Korean instrument.....the accordion....
sadly, it kind of is
It kinda fucking is,
This was amazing. I honestly didn't know that Koreans got down on the accordion. And, they are playing, "Take On Me!"
Fuck yeah, North Korea! Let's do Accordion Diplomacy!
Its a soviet thing they follow
Of course, there is always a bunch of ignorant racists in the comments
'"Take on me" in North Korea. Some fresh exclusively from the west just dropped in 2011.
Now they listening to Wu Tang Forever.
I like to watch this because of how big the accordions are compared to their bodies.
Those are typical 120 bass accordions. It's the Asians that are small.
PlasticRarity your Profile Pic reminds me of Steven Universe
They would be that small with the lack of food
@ velikiradojica
the joke

To be honest, I really enjoyed this rendition. It kind of makes me happy that this type of music exists in a really drab and oppressed world of the DPRK
Bread and Circuses.
tedmerr minus the bread
Oppressed? How?
Bread and circuses. But you are part of the circus!
Сет “sure the North Korean government will jail you for stepping out of line but they have sweet music so it’s perfectly fine”
Something very touching and sweet about this rendition... best wishes to these young players.
This is incredible.. makes me so happy that the internet was invented so we can hear these kinds of exchanges between cultures. :)
jokes aside, they are great!
Thank you John Oliver. I wouldn't have heard of this if it weren't for your show.
Incoming John Oliver flood in 3... 2... 1...

Milena Stojanovic filmed in China
Video description says it was filmed in Pyongyang.
russian
Milena Stojanovic probably because the government thought it wasn't a bad video to get out there.
i hope these musicians will one day see that this video was uploaded and that the world applauded them.
I think these kids are DEAR. Kids are kids everywhere. I hope these young people have a future where they have choices as to who they want to be and what they want to do. You go, kids. Enjoyed your song.
This is very cool, even though I fear for everyone there.
God Bless them!! I love the arrangement.
I like their glorious haircut
Great choice! Haircut number 17 is very popular around here.
shy lmao
Approved by The great leader himself
They should do Rick Astley never gonna give you up
+
I feel rick rolled, I know I wasn't but it feels the same
Then put it over footage of “America Burning”
Also makes cool sounds when you tap on accordion , nice touch....

A-ha é bom demais! Gostei muito dessa versão.
I wonder how they know about this song....
It was written by glorious supreme leader Kim Jong Un
they know alot of songs from they're local music shops
Young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Music shops selling foreign music? that's illegal there...

As a weeb you may not understand this, but they're not going to show you what truly goes on in NK.
Preciosa interpretacion!!! Saludos!! Enrique

This is something I never thought existed, never thought I would like, and yet it does and I do.
Wow, very talented players, and I'm amazed to learn they only took 2 days to adapt, write and memorize their version after hearing the song for the first time. Nice job guys!

Nicholas, that's not exactly true. filmed in Pyongyang, North Korea December 2011.
There is one in ever hope so they can keep an eye on the people.

For the commoners though...
Don't! It's still really bad!

The fact that their living under an oppressive psycopath regime just makes them being able to perform like this that much more impressive!
Probably party leadership kids living in Pyongyang. Life is reportedly a lot more "free" for them due to trust they are given.
who else is here thanks to John Oliver?
How many of you are here because of John Oliver? :D
I give these kids a lot of credit for making the best of their situation. Twas the day after easter I saw something magnificent...
Who's here because of John Oliver?
This never gets old, I hope all these musicians are healthy and happy today.
Playing their accordion is probably the highlight of their day....
Just beautiful!
thanks john oliver, this was an experience
Reminds me of those midi music files you’d find to play on the background of a MySpace page
