    Well professor another great fly and another great lesson. Always loved your videos. My dad was fly tying for a long time and those old styles of flies are actually something special to me! Thank you!

    Year in, year out this is always one of my most productive flies. I love tying it. I've never seen pulling the dubbing through the deer hair before but I'm going to try it now! Thanks for the tip!

    I've always loved Fran Betters patterns but never seen the wing separated and dubbed through. I love it. Fantastic.

    Did enjoy it, Davie... thank you.
    I may try this one in a "spun dun" style. I've got some tying time yet... the ice and snow are going but it will be a while before the spring olives are around.

      Hi Christian,
      I'm glad you are a fan of my videos and that they have helped you with your flies...I use a Law Vice but unfortunately it is no longer being made, you can come across one for sale from time to time though they can fetch well over a thousand pounds due to this which is a shame..
      All the very best Davie..

    Hi Dave,
    another great tying vid. Thanks a lot.
    One question, you always use some wax for tying. Which one do you use?
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers

      Hi Andreas,
      I'm glad you enjoyed the video...I use Veniards Prepared Fly Tyers Wax which I have used since I started tying over 30 years ago and is still the same in all that time..

      Davie McPhail
      Thank you very much Davie!
      One last question for today: which bobbin do you prefer? Is it the tiemco? If yes, which design?
      Have a nice evening
      Andreas

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  5 років тому

      Hi Andreas,
      I prefer the Tiemco Heavy Duty version although the light weight one is a good one as well...I have attached a link to the one I use most..

    Meant to ask, Davie. You've mentioned here and on other flies your feeling modern hooks are larger than the same size has been historically. I've been using Kamasan hooks since I first started watching your tying videos. Are Kamasan hooks more like historical sizing or do then tend to the modern over sizing.
    Mike

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  5 років тому

      Hi Mike,
      The kamasan hooks are close to the old sizes, it's manly the dry fly, nymph, jig and signature hooks that are all over the place when it comes to sizes...
      All the very best Davie..

    Hi Davie quick question what kind of vise do you use

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  5 років тому

      Hi Flytyingnepa 15,
      I use a Law Vise which unfortunately is no longer made, it was a gentleman called Lawrence Waldron the made them and you will find lots of info on it if you do a search online..
      All the very best Davie..

    I'm starting to get into fly tying, any tips/advice?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  5 років тому +1

      Hi Matthew Stone,
      When I started tying flies I bought the materials for the flies I wanted to fish and that was dry flies though I slowly started to build up materials for wets and nymphs as I went along as you will need them..I would say just enjoy learning as you go along and listen to anyone that is willing to help you as you will enjoy this hobby even more. I have never stopped learning that's why I still enjoy tying flies today as I did over 30 years ago..
      All the very best Davie..
