What you failed to mention is that the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next% 2 Ultra Mega is about £300 and is only designed to last 100 miles before you need to replace them. For this amount of money I would expect Kelvin Kiptum to train me.

Yep that’s a really handy summary of some stuff we’ve learned in your podcasts, another great video Brodie!! I just listened to that podcast with Simon the other day actually!! I just spent 10 days running the entire length of the Burgundy Canal and spent many many hours catching up on your old podcasts as I ran along! I ended up doing 287km in 10 days!!!💪🏻🏃🏻‍♀️💪🏻 A massive volume PB for me!! What a great adventure !! AND massively upped my running IQ at the same time !! Am now recovering really well!! 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

That’s amazing Bev! I love hearing about your adventures and love for the podcast ❤️ I did a recovery series around episode 95-99 which you’ll be interested in if you haven’t seen them already. Keep up the amazing work!

@@RunSmarterwithBrodieSharpe THANKS so much Brodie!! 😁 Actually I haven’t worked out how to find your podcasts using the number on the Run Smarter app, which only gives the date, though the number does appear when I use Audible instead!! And also Audible remembers where I was up to as well, unlike your app! Has anyone else had that problem ??

It all depends on the app you are using. The categorise in different ways and provide different info. If you download the run smarter app you can find all my episodes in categories which might be helpful in some circumstances.

@@RunSmarterwithBrodieSharpe Oh yes Brodie, what I meant is that it's the Run Smarter app that doesn't have the episode numbers!! Nor does it remember my previous spot! It would be extremely convenient if it did!! Yes those categories are handy sometimes. Am thoroughly enjoying that Recovery Month you recommended from 2020, thanks!!

As some commenters have pointed out, durability is an important factor, and Adidas' Lightstrike Pro foam is found to be the most durable foam by reviewers - it looks like it wasn't even part of the study referred to in this video.
This foam has extremely good performance and still lasts the longest time, as it's not PEBA but TPEE based. The downside is that it doesn't feel very soft in the initial 20km or so - after that it's great.

Hey Brodie, my understanding of supershoes is not one out performs another but each person is an individual and some work better than others for each one of us. You just got to find the one that works for you and it may not be the Alphafly. There are a lot of youtube testers prefer the Vapourfly over the Alphafly. It's more important that it's comfortable. When supershoes 1st came out I could only get to 32km in my Skys by 35km I had the shoe feel like I had a piece of chewing gum (a lump) under my foot but nothing there. My NB Elite felt nice for the 2 x Marathons I've done in them. One 3h12 in Wellington NZ and a 3h08 in Melbourne the same year.

That is an excellent point. Comfort definitely needs to be a factor when selecting your final shoe. And you shouldn’t persist with one shoe you find awkward or uncomfortable. I guess this would be a guide on where to start if someone hadn’t ran in any of these shoes. Or helpful for someone who would find all shoes comfortable.

In total agreement with both of you. Comfort trumps all.
Brodie, that last study you used is probably Dustin Joubert's, judging by the images of the shoes? From memory he used the asics hyper speed as the control shoe.
I heard him interviewed a couple of times and he's continuing the research to capture the 'average' runner, not just the very quick runners involved in the initial study.
That is to say, new foams in combination with carbon plates have helped elite runners achieve great results.
When I (an average runner) use supershoes I do run faster but it's the leg saving on long / hard efforts and seemingly quicker recovery from these runs that makes supershoes such an attractive proposition for me.
I cannot imagine attempting a marathon in the light / low stack flats runners did them in in the past : - )
Great video Brodie, thanks for posting. I found your mara pacing and nutrition / hydration vids very useful.

It would be interesting to see effect of super shoes on runners over 60 yo. I might hypothesize that the decreased elasticity of older runners bodies ( eg knees hips etc) might take some beating in the later stages of a marathon. They might be more effective in a half marathon distance. I am not sure I personally can see running in mine for 26 miles….and it’s kind of hard to practice in a long training run for “ fear” of getting sore in those later miles

  • @geoffb2900

The comparative review of seven super shoes seems to have used 5-minute trials as its basis for comparing running shoe economy. I'm guessing that performance over the full marathon distance might result in a different relative ranking of shoes.

    • @RunSmarterwithBrodieSharpe
      @RunSmarterwithBrodieSharpe  5 місяців тому

Agreed! Essentially looking at a snapshot of running economy (ie. how much energy does the shoe return to the runner) rather than getting all the runners to run 8 marathons all wearing different shoes. But that would be a good study 😅
