The second book you mentioned sounds like a good set up for a psychological thriller, not a romance.
Like she she lurs this mentally unstable guy into her house, analyzing him for her own purpose and pretending she loves him for her studies (maybe a psychiatrist who lost her license?), but he's not only the victim being also not a very good person, making her fall in doubt as to if this is worthy. So you have these two morally corrupt people tormenting each other which, by your description, they seem to already do in the book but through different, romantic lenses.

I actually thought the same while reading it. I felt tension in the set up and then realized I wasn’t supposed to, it was supposed to be sweet 😅

As an Indian, I always have a very troubling relationship with the Secret Garden. If you know the dark and blood history of british colonialism...there are portions that trigger due to tone deafness despite attempting to grow the character towards a more compassionate self.
It still has that subliminal racism that you find in colonial era literature trying to criticize colonialism but at the same time not letting go of the 'western ideals' .
I love the writing...and of course this issue i have is not the main part of the book.

    • @merphynapier42

The only book I’ve read out of these is The Midnight Library, and I was one of the people who didn’t like his execution. It was too surface-level and “fun adventure book” for my style considering the theme of the story. There were some discussions I really liked, but overall I would’ve preferred a more deep-dive into the topic at hand. But I also feel it’s mostly a preference thing. I love deep psychological things and I felt that book wasn’t it for me, it was more plot-focused than I was hoping it would be. But if you want something with dark and somewhat relatable themes with a unique plot revolving around it then it’s recommended!

I'm so depressed about The Midnight Library. I'm an aspiring author but, due to a previous setback, procrastinated really heavily (like 4 or 5 years) over an idea about a man wanting to die and being given the opportunity to see how his life could've played out if he'd made different choices at various points in his life and then my sister brought this book home.
I guess stories like these are all just versions of A Christmas Carol in a sense and this one was hit and miss so maybe in the future but for now... guess I have to work on a different idea lol. Definitely motivation to make sure none of my other ideas are taken away from me!

Ok so this is going to be quite a long comment but I've been desperate for books like this/have this trope and I have no clue where to find them! Basically, I'm looking for YA books where the protagonist is a warrior/fighter in some way and they have a combat partner who is also their best friend. However, throughout the book, they fall for each other. The romance is more of a subplot but still a pretty prominent part of the book. Think Percy Jackson but YA. I'm open to pretty much anything, just keep it YA.

6:07 - isn't weird similes and stuff kinda the purview of literary fiction though? 🤔🤔 (Like..it's intentional that things don't have to be described literally, or whatever?) Not sure why the wine "silked" down her throat though, but ribbons can be silk, so that's sort of a word-associative theme-buzzing, leading in a reference to bees, is too. (Usually those sorts of things are meant to hold some kind of relevance or significance to the character or the story though, I think?)
I guess maybe his voice was clipped or no-nonsense or unobtrusive or self-restrained or something?
Apart from that though..... I have no idea😅😅🤷‍♀️😁🙃🤣

    Hey murphy!
Was looking through your videos to see if you had continued with Lady Trent's memoirs. I can't find anything after this video that mentions Voyage of the Basilisk. I'm sure you will continue with Labyrinth of Drakes (book 4) which is amazing, I think it is my favorite. If you already read it and talked about it in the vlogs or the main channel, please direct me to it. Here's hoping there will be a video of spoilers for the series as a whole, I would really love to hear your thoughts. Happy week!

Hi Merphy, can we please pick up Skulduggery Pleasant now? I literally cannot believe you haven't read it yet. It is an absolutely amazing series (Book 5 is my favorite, followed very closely by Book 4) and you must read it.
    Please.

Oh man, your critiques of This Close to Okay sound identical to my thoughts on This is How You Lose the Time War... Like, just because what you're saying sounds pretty does not mean it makes sense!! And both characters speaking that way also makes no sense!! Still laughing at "modest like fresh cut grass"... H... HOW. How is fresh cut grass MODEST, ma'am. 🤣

If you liked The Midnight Library you should watch Being Erica. It's a Canadian show and in my opinion a far, FAR better execution of the same concept

I am not afraid of much, but water in caves/ cavediving really scares me. Just thinging about it makes my heart race, I cant imagine watching the documentary, even though I too was following the new about it when the story was happening.

I know I've commented this on one of your previous videos, but I highly recommended the Tide Child trilogy by RJ Barker, it would be right up your alley. It's an epic fantasy with pirates (kinda sorta, more like privateers) and sea battles and unlikely friendships and just beautiful prose.
Not enough people are reading it.

My favourite Frances Hodgson Burnett is the short story at the end of Queen Silverbell, about a little girl who becomes the “wife” of a rook. It was so odd 😂

5:30... My thought process was something like this: "This has to be a joke, right? It's satire. It has to be. That's the only reason for anybody to decide to write like that... Wait. Oh no. It isn't? Now I'm intrigued because I love a horrendous trainwreck."

    Spoilers(ish?) for Midnight Library:
The one thing i heard about Midnight Library a lot is, that ppl didnt like how she was all okay in the end. That it was just "Klick, you good now."
Thats something i DIDNT read at all. Yes she has a hopeful moment after all that happens, but the book never states she is just fine for the rest of her days now. Its not even about "mental health" per se, but more about a message of hope and the "the grass is greener elsewhere" mindset, wich can be very harmful. I LOVED how this story picked up such a relatable thing as comparing onself with other versions of oneself or even others, and showed that the past isnt what holds us down.
This story is merely Noras first step, and everything else is yet to come.
This book was easily my No.1 Read last year.

Hi Merphy, I was just wondering what you think of Agatha Christie. I like mystery books, I've got the Sherlock Holmes collection. I know Agatha Christie has some famous books, I just don't know which book would be a good introduction into her style of writing.
