      essentially manga is just an art style of comics which just so happened to come from japan and thus is read from right to left. What I think the west need to look at from specifically manga when it comes to western comics it is the kind of stories japan is willing to tell compared to what stories the west is willing to tell. For those who has seen the anime/manga "Bakuman" (its a shonen manga about making manga) there is one quote that I find to be the essence of what manga is built upon and that quote is "manga only needs to be interesting, and it will sell".
      When writing a story, be that for a light novel, a manga or a comic, instead of asking yourself "do I need to portray positive political messages" "do I need to adhere to my countries political standard" "Do I need to include diversity and minority groups to have as much inclusion as possible" "should I think about who I might offend" "can I not show nudity, gore or unsettling themes such as trauma, rape, death, mental health because people will be uncomfortable" simply ask yourself "Is my story interesting, and could going against the public comfort zone and my previous examples make it more interesting.
      Stories such as Death Note are interesting BECAUSE it goes against the typical "good guy wants to save the world and make all happy" and instead focus on "morally gray character does really bad shit to create a world full of what he considers to be good, only to be halted by ANOTHER morally gray character who does some messed up shit himself to stop the first guy because he believes that one should not achieve good by doing bad. We love Death Note not because we agree with any of the characters, but because it makes us think, it makes us question ourselves and others morality and it makes us wonder "what if this actually happened" and THAT makes it Interesting :)

      If situation permits it's possible, if you're not working or going to school you can do it with a strict schedule, 10 hrs a day for 32 days, 320 hrs. Then it's the parameters how long will the manga be? In 320 hrs you could do a long 1 chapter one shot, a 4 chapter mini series, or a 12 chapter full story. Me personally I'd go the 12 chapter route, successful works you can find with this manga length are I want to Eat your Pancreas, A Silent Voice, I had that same Dream Again. I want to eat your Pancreas, and Silent Voice are complete stories adapted into a full 2 hr anime movie. By success I don't think just anybody could get a movie within 32 days, but viewership, I gave 320 hrs of my life I'd at least want 300 people to read my 12 ch manga within a month after release and realistically the ceiling for a "semi-pro" a quasi professional, 10,000 views would be worthwhile. That would mean that my combination of beautiful pics with beautiful words resonated with 10,000 people, and brought a smile to somebody maybe even saved a life or 2

      Maybe it's that there is death and danger associated with taking the action, as the ones that I recognized from your list all involved attacking or were just involved with something that took a character you(and hopefully the audience too) care about's friend's or family's/something else they love away from from them before our eyes. This makes us feel rage against the person doing this, and acts of defiance against this enemy resonate with our personal desire to "Give 'em Hell!"

      @@MonitorComics glad you asked, you see the cliche shonen protagonist story was revolutionised by akira, although at the time there was manga out there that had the same plotline, strong protagonist uses the power of will to overcome any obstacles, akira really used this and amplified it. For e.g. naruto, kishimoto idolised akira's page spread technique he used to tell a story at the start of the naruto manga kishimoto didn't know how to use panels and angling to tell a story. He asked akira for help, akira toriyama uses angling and proper panelling to telling a 1000 words his master roshi vs kid goku fight. During the 23rd tournament against master roshi (or jackie chun) the story is told from goku's perspective up until he fights master roshi in which toriyama uses angling of his drawings to really show the fight through master roshi's lens its a simple detail many overlook toriyama wasn't writing or drawing for goku to win, in that fight he made the audience see it through roshi's lens (pun intended) this was evident when goku turned into a great ape, now the audience is rooting for master roshi to beat goku (the main protagonist). Toriyama implemented what is being used today so casually to show progress of a character, something called the timeskip. Prior to this time skip, goku after losing to mercenary tao realises he cannot go far with just master roshi's training alone and akira uses korin's tower as a literal and figurative symbol to show the obstacle goku has to literally climb in order to save his friends father. If i remember correctly he was told he would become stronger if he could climb the tower in which he did rise to the occasion and this led to him meeting korin

      @@MonitorComics its alot of stuff there but i'm just showing you the formulas nowadays manga artists have adopted, imma skip a bit forward to dragon ball z, kishimoto said he loved the way akira drew goku vs vegeta. At a visual standpoint we see goku standing on a rock at a lower level than vegeta showing that even though goku has gotten stronger he is still a bit weaker than vegeta who stands at a higher rock, this also shows that goku is literally the one standing between vegeta and the earth kishimoto used this to write, naruto vs sasuke in the first part and in shippuden when he first meets sasuke, sasuke stands on a ledge higher than naruto looking down on him after seeing him for the first time and naruto looking up at sasuke it shows their level of power at that point. Naruto as a character takes alot from goku, hidden power accessed through intense struggle, unknown parents who died before the child protagonist could meet them and an unshaking will to move beyond whatever obstacle is infront of them. They both exhibit a naive and childish personality seeing the world through an optimistic lens working towards a goal. They both meet a sensei that leaves them with a will. Master roshi tells goku to become stronger not for selfish reasons or competition but to test ones limit and to protect other, jiraiya taught naruto to never give up to be a "gutsy" ninja and push to reach towards your goal. Akira was one of the first manga writers to use tournament arcs to show progress in the main character's strength and resolve, many many many other manga utilised this and even made it better. Naruto's tournament arc is still one of the best arca of the series to date

I particularly loved your power systems video, as it's something I struggle with creating. I like to draw characters, but I'm not good at writing them, or making combat flow, so can I ask you how to make an interesting main cast? One piece has helped immensely with visual design and backstory, but the way that demon slayer made their actions and development coincide was fun to read. I feel like this is also an important part of writing a story, as having an active fanbase can keep your series alive and even revive it if you decide to stop writing, and good characters make those endless what ifs and side stories possible.

    Successful doesn’t necessarily mean good, specially with the Tokyo Revengers and Demon Slayer on the thumbnail

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. "Good" is a subjective term. Something I think of as good is going to be different than something you see as good and will be different than the millions of other people think something is "good." When things are popular or mainstream, it means there is a lot of public interest. Yes you are correct that that doesn't inherently make it "good," but the fanbases are so large that objectively many would consider them good. Personally, I thought the Demon Slayer anime was very good. I thought the Tokyo Revengers anime was crap, but the manga was decent

    • @Rascalzzz

      @@MonitorComics Sure thing!
      Yes I get what you mean with it being subjective
      but there’s a critical way to determine whether a show/book is good or not
      For example, I also enjoyed watching Demon Slayer. But! I also know that it doesn’t have any character development, it has a repetitive pattern in how the story goes on, and it’s just a shonen cliché just like Black Clover.
      Imma even make a guess about Tanjiro as an anime only
      He’ll probably end up/reveal some half human half demon race to him just like other anime involved with devil/angel races

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  2 роки тому +1

      That is true! Demon Slayer is very "textbook." It does a lot of things "good." It isn't necessarily the most "unique" series and it doesn't do a lot of things "bad," but it is a "safe" story that takes heavy inspiration from successful shonen stories of the past. I won't go into the future of Demon Slayer, but I do see where youre coming from. At the end of the day, nothing is 100% original, it all comes down to how you execute it. Demon Slayer managed to appeal to a wide audience at the right time and place. I can agree that it doesn't feel like anything new, but there has to be a reason it's so highly regarded and praised

    Hello, is it true that manga is growing more and more especially in the United States ????, sorry, the question is that I have not been attentive to the news, please, a quick answer

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  2 роки тому +1

      Hello! I can only speak from my own experience. I currently live in the US, more specifically the state Pennsylvania. Growing up, i feel like it was still seen as weird to like anime. For a while, I didn't talk about it much because people would always tease the "weebs" in school
      More recently though, specifically the past few years, anime has become VERY MAINSTREAM. I'm in college now and almost everyone i am associated with likes anime, k-dramas etc
      I've been to a few different college parties where people would put the japanese singer Eve on the playlist haha. A lot of my friends are jocks, sorority girls, and guys who throw big parties, so it's not like I sought out people who liked anime lol
      Now that I am an adult, I can also see the spread of influence professionally. Manga sells REALLY WELL in the US. Recently, it was reported manga was selling WAY MORE than western comics
      Publishers are also starting to embrace the style. Printers like Dark Horse, Image Comics, TokyoPop, The Atlantic Press, etc all encourage the anime artstyle
      Popular streaming sites like Netflix have also made anime a lot more mainstream. Anime movies in theaters sell REALLY WELL too.
      As I said, I can only speak from what I have seen and read but I would definitely say anime HAS and will continue to grow in the US

      Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! What I meant by that was Demon Slayer does a good job portraying the sibling relationship and giving the parent characters a role in the plot development. As far as dragonball goes, we all know Piccolo raised Gohan LOL. Family isn't really emphasized that much, they just happen to have kids. I'm not fully caught up to Hunter X Hunter or Black Clover so I can't speak on them, at least for the time being

      For the Cell saga, while I agree with your point. We can't forget Goku gave up and let an actual child deal with it. And to top it off he gave cell a senzu bean, he was p much saying "please kill my son" LOL
      Vegeta DID embody the theme of family a lot better than goku, so I'll give you that too. Vegeta's overall development had a lot of great elements, his relationship with future trunks and his sacrifice during the Majin Buu arc especially

    I remember I had thought on my own version of a story like that but that the conflict is that the male character is either gay or asexual and he knows that he should have intercourse with women to save world's population but he is very inconfortable with it and has to deal with the loss of his male friends.

A quick google search will show you plenty of resources stating that the big 3 of the 2000s are One Piece, Bleach, and Naruto. When Dragonball was serializing in the late 80s, early 90s, the big 3 was Dragonball, Yu Yu Hakusho and Saint Seiya

      Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! The literal answer is it is published in Shueisha's online magazine Shōnen Jump+. The more complicated answer is the story falls into the ecchi genre which can sometimes overlap with shonen manga. Some other shonen jump manga that did something similar were Ichigo 100, To Love Ru, Yuuna And The Haunted Hot Springs, and I's. I personally would've classified it as a seinen, but shonen jump has been accepting more mature works lately like The Promised Neverland and Chainsaw Man
