  • Review of Mark Rober's Creative Engineering Course on Monthly. Our family took the first offering of the course and we try to help answer the questions that people have such as will Mark Rober comment or provide feedback on their builds; what do you need to do the course; what age is appropriate for the course.
    I really enjoyed that Mark teaches the details of how he creates his videos during the course.
    Note: It is simulated course content in the video, and it was not actually recorded from the Monthly course website.

    This video deserves more attention. Im super grateful that you & your kids spent the time sharing your thoughts and experiences with Mark’s class. What I’d really like to know is, what are some minimum electronics ie arduino/raspberry pi/ and software/ materials (other then power tools, wrenches, hammer etc) that you recommend purchasing prior to beginning the class and approx how much money in addition to the class cost to expect to spend for these items. Also if you have recommendations on the best places to purchase these things. Thanks again.

    • @TheFriendlyReviewer
      @TheFriendlyReviewer  3 роки тому +2

      That's a hard one to answer, because it highly depends on what you choose for your projects.
      For the mechanical project I saw everything from creations made from foam board, card board, popsicle sticks, wood, PVC pipe, and metal. Some people also were very good at re-using things they had laying around and re-purposing them. You may not need them, but a hot glue gun, drill, screw driver set, and hacksaw could be useful - but it really depends on your project.
      For the electric portion if you're on the younger side (grade school) a simple cheap motor from Amazon may do the trick, but I'd suggest a starter Arduino kit (the off-brand ELEGOO UNO starter kit on amazon is decently priced (under $40) and comes with quite a few sensors, LEDs, and motors to play with for your project. Again, it will come down to what project you choose and how creative you are in using things to build it.
      The advanced engineering project can re-use the Arduino or use a Raspberry Pi. I don't think the Raspberry Pi is necessary, but it depends on how advanced you try to get with your project.
      Hope this helps

    • @TheFriendlyReviewer
      @TheFriendlyReviewer  3 роки тому +5

      Purchasing the class on monthly doesn't provide any equipment, only access to the course and peer group. You'll need to purchase the equipment/tools yourself. Much of what you need depends on what you decide to build.

    hey im looking to get involved with marks next course , Im just wondering what sort of materials would you recommend have lying around the house to get the most out of it? Im looking to do something with a raspberry pi but do not have much available to me outside of that . thanks .

    • @TheFriendlyReviewer
      @TheFriendlyReviewer  3 роки тому

      That's a difficult one as it really depends on what projects you decide to tackle. I saw people who did an amazing job with card board, popsicle sticks, hot glue, and an Arduino starter kit that had a few random motors and sensors with it. On the far other end I saw people machine metal, 3D print, and use a raspberry pi.
      What I'm saying is that you can probably make just about anything work, but you may have to constrain what projects you take on, or how you go about creating them. He often joked about getting 'extra points' by being creative and re-using random stuff you have laying around. (We used old scraps of wood we had laying around, took apart a toy to use parts of it, but we also did purchase some stuff as well)
      I do think some basic building materials would be useful, but it's a little hard to predict ahead of time before choosing what you'll build. I also think an Arduino starter kit with motors and servos provides a lot of options as well. Hope this helps!

    What was it like for you to take the course as an engineer yourself? Did it change the way you looked at the engineering design process?

    • @TheFriendlyReviewer
      @TheFriendlyReviewer  3 роки тому +6

      As an engineer it's always interesting to see other's design processes even if they are all based off the same structure. I thought Mark provided a great process of how to come up with new interesting ideas and his criteria of how he determines if they are worthy for pursuing from a creative engineering perspective.
      Prior to the course I hadn't used a 3D printer (we had just gotten one) or an Arduino/Raspberry Pi, so the course was good motivation to come up with interesting fun build ideas and pursue them using some tools I hadn't tried prior.
      I really like how the course was taught that my kids could also join in the fun/challenge and learn a lot.

      @@TheFriendlyReviewer Thank you. Also forgot to ask. Get one for each kid, or sharing the kit works well enough?

    • @TheFriendlyReviewer
      @TheFriendlyReviewer  3 роки тому +2

      That is a little hard to predict. They are easy enough to re-program, but re-wiring sensors/LEDs to them over and over again can be tough if multiple people are working/debugging different projects at the same time. (depends on how complex you get) You'll need a computer with each one as well during the programming phase. Something that can be helpful is there is a free Arduino emulator on TinkerCAD.com under circuits where you can wire up and write software for Arduino Unos. Another note is if you have very young kids doing the course, they may just want to wire up a motor with a switch and batteries without an Arduino to complete the electronic project.

    Are there certain times things have to be done at or by? I’m working all day long and considering taking the course but only if I can to do it at my own pace

    • @TheFriendlyReviewer
      @TheFriendlyReviewer  3 роки тому

      The course unlocks each of the new sections approximately one per week so there is only so far you can get ahead of the group. After they are unlocked you can do the class at whatever pace you'd like (I can still access the videos from January and complete assignments if I'd like), but ... If you want to interact with your peer group with each assignment, you'll need to keep up with the due dates. This may mean you submit a partially complete assignment to give/receive feedback, and then come back after the class is over and improve upon it.

    Hey, I have a question. How much is the course in total? What I mean is after you buy the course, you have to buy the materials correct? If so how much would you say the course costs? Thanks!

    • @TheFriendlyReviewer
      @TheFriendlyReviewer  3 роки тому

      That’s really hard to answer since it depends on what you pick for your projects and how creative you can be repurposing things you have laying around. On top of the course you’ll want to pick up an Arduino starter kit as a base. The Elegoo version which comes with sensors/motors/LEDs is less than $40 on Amazon. You may want more than this, but it depends. The mechanical aspects can be wood, popsicle sticks, foam, PVC pipes, cardboard, ... all the way up to metal work if you’re able. I saw everything from rubber bands, springs, to pneumatic pistons as well. It’s really up to you. You can pick up a Raspberry Pi for the final build, but many did not. Your budget and skill set may limit your project selection and/or how you build them.

  • @LearnThaiRapidMethod
    @LearnThaiRapidMethod Рік тому

    I was interested in signing up for this but the Studio platform is very inflexible and deceptive: it's not a one month purchase of $12, it's $144 to be able to access the course material for one year (and then it's terminated).
    Plus I had to really dig into the course details to find out that we have to buy a kit, costing $130 (with shipping) - not sure whether the 20% discount applies.
    Do you know if the course is available on a different platform? Udemy would be ideal because it's exactly the same set of videos (and I presume activity sheets) that is on demand and downloadable.
    Why a subscription model? And why force us to pay for a year's access when only a month or two (who does a 30-day course every single day for 2-4 hours anyway)?
    The support rep at Studio was also unhelpful and deceptive, trying to upsell me the benefits of the platform when I tried to ask specific questions about your course and why I couldn't just sign up for the 30 (60)-day duration of the course. 🙁
    Essentially, it's a self-study collection of videos and worksheets that can be worked through at one's own pace. There's nothing "live" about the course and there's not much point in a "community" of other participants for what are individual projects to be completed at home (by oneself without feedback or help from others). It's really tiresome to be "marketed" to in this hyped up and disengenuous way; which is more likely to create disappointment and buyer's remorse than otherwise.
    I've been trying to contact Mark to see if the course videos and worksheets are available directly as a one-off downloadable (and hence cheaper) purchase - no doubt Studio takes a hefty commission for their platform (which is why they force us to buy the upsell access to their "library"). So it's probably doable, right?

    I have two questions.
    1. Where would I get all of the materials needed for a project?
    2. How would I know which materials I would need for my project?

    • @TheFriendlyReviewer
      @TheFriendlyReviewer  3 роки тому

      1.) It depends on what you choose to do for your projects. I've had a lot of people ask me this, I should put some info and links in the video description.
      - For the mechanical project you can repurpose stuff around your home; use cardboard, popsicle sticks, hot glue, form board, rubber bands etc; or order parts from hardware stores, Amazon, or McMaster-Carr.
      - For the electrical project (assuming you're not a young kid), it's suggested to get an Arduino Uno Starter kit. The ELEGOO Uno kit is less than $40 on Amazon. From there it depends if you only use what is included in the kit or if you want or need to expand.
      - The advanced project is really up to you. You can use a Raspberry Pi, the Arduino, 3D printers, ... what ever you'd like.
      Overall, it's really up to you. I saw people who were successful only using cardboard, popsicle sticks, hot glue, rubber bands, and the Arduino starter kit. On the other end I saw people using full machinery to make metal parts along with 3D printing and such.
      2.) Other than the Arduino suggestion, you determine the material you want to try when you come up with the idea, research, and experiment with each project.
