  • Tears of the Kingdom is an incredible achievement for The Legend of Zelda series, for Nintendo and for video games in general. But it's also a meditation on the human experience. It is a totem; a crystallized piece of art that beautifully captures living through a worldwide pandemic - and trying to find connection on the other side of grief. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is, above all else, about being human.

Holy crap. As much as I loved this game, I thought for sure an ambitious video essay like this one would be giving it too much credit. But, my goodness, your voice and elegant phrasing of ideas genuinely impressed me and made me want to pick up the game again even after beating the main story. I mean it: you have true brilliance and passion. Never lose them. I too am happy to be human with you. 💞

I found all of this to make Totk a wonderful sequel to Botw, as well. Thematically, Botw is a direct reflection of the shift in design philosophy the devs took; overreliance on tradition will only result in complacence, stagnation, and eventually, failure. After Hyrule falls to the Calamity due to relying solely on an old and used solution, Link is left to pick up the pieces by going on an adventure about finding your own unique, innovative solutions to problems, and seeking self reflection through your memories.
Totk then featuring a story about the remaining inhabitants of Hyrule reconnecting, and taking up new leadership positions with their own new, unique traits as a result of those reconnections, felt really powerful to me. It felt like all of the sages had something to reflect on too in regards to heading up the next generation. Sidon struggles with the idea of having to emulate his predecessor, Yunobo is forced to redeem his reputation after failing expectations, etc. Im kind of surprised so many people seem to think the game fails as a sequel, honestly. Everything that I thought was most important to the story, being the strong theme that reflects the games’ development, carried over from Botw to Totk so well.

Love this. My favorite thing about playing games is feeling like I’m getting a window into the hearts and mindsets of the people making them. What a good example this is of that.

Thank you for making this video. So many people don't seem to actually understand this aspect of the game's plot and underlying themes. They seem to have only a shallow, surface-level and crude understanding of the characters and themes and it honestly makes me a bit sad, because the themes this game presents, of connections, between Link and Zelda to each other, to their friends, to people like Sonia and Rauru and to Hyrule itself, and all the other connections between the people we see are just so damn beautiful and meaningful in this game. I really wish this aspect was appreciated more instead of just all constant talk about how "bad" the game supposedly is or how horny a character makes someone.
In a recent polygon interview about Rauru, Fujibayashi said "He ends up serving as the crucial connection between Link and Zelda, even when thousands of years separate the two" and went into specifics about how he wanted to be a character that connected the present and past.
So it seems that even the character of Rauru himself was devised with this theme of "connection" in mind.

the gloom sickness wasn't inspired by covid, it was inspired by Naussica which has an underground poisonous forest. Two other Ghibli films also played slight inspiration. Laputa with an ancient sky island that use to be the home of technologically advanced people, aka the Zonai. and Princess Mononoke with the cursed arm.

Holy shit, the Princess Mononoke reference is truly spot on, it didn't even crossed my mind, but i knew that these elements reminded me of something.

I’ve been playing the legend of Zelda since a link to the past and links awaking on the gameboy.
    I’m now 44.
Love the series and like you ,I don’t remember a time I’ve not played them through my life.
Botw is my favourite by far
That games sense of wonder and exploration was top tier
I enjoyed tears but I didn’t get the same feeling as I got in botw.
But tears complements the first game well

Breath of the Wild was my first Zelda game; I picked it up around early 2018 and by the time I was completely in love with it, the sequel was announced. Since then I’ve played practically every Zelda game and have almost 100%ed all the 3D entry’s (almost finished Wind Waker). Tears of the Kingdom was probably the best experience I’ve ever had with a game. Staying up late every night for weeks playing for hours at a time was an incredible experience I will never forget. The game is not perfect, I have many problems, the most personally prevalent of which being the game’s disconnection from Breath of the Wild, but even issues like these could not put a dent in my experience. Finally, a modern game that feels like it was completely worth the wait. Can’t wait to see what Nintendo cooks up next…

9:21 This article brings up my biggest criticism about the finale, and that was how the Sages were handled. Throughout the whole present-day story, Link awakens a new generation of Sages to fight hand-in-hand with him against Ganondorf. Halfway through the only part of final boss where they fight Ganondorf alongside Link, they’re knocked out and then left in the Depths until the secret ending. If you’re going to have the main theme of the game be about connection, you have to stay true to that theme throughout the whole plot. So by knocking the Sages out and leaving them in the Depths, the writers both invalidated that whole theme as well as invalidated the roles of the Sages entirely. Because Link was able to defeat Ganondorf one-on-one as well as slay the Demon Dragon on his own, it creates the idea that Link ultimately never needed the Sages. And that aggravates me so much because I was super excited to have the Sages fight Ganondorf alongside Link.

I would argue that, at least for the Demon Dragon, the Light Dragon saving you and the Master Sword being given to you if you don't have it is meant to be Zelda aiding you, because it's directly stated in the compendium entry for the Demon Dragon that the Master Sword is the only thing that can harm it
For the Demon King Phase 3 I got nothing tbh outside of the master sword being unbreakable and being able to reflect the gloom projectiles.
Speed running and doing the final sequence with none of the sages is also a directly more difficult fight, with you needing to fight an army of enemies, plus all 6 dungeon bosses on top of ganondorf which is a steep difficulty spike

Great video Seth! My first memories in gaming was the original Zelda on NES as well and the series also holds a very special place in my heart because of that. I will never stop getting excited when a new Zelda game gets announced and the anticipation leading up to release day. Those butterfly feels playing the first few minutes never get old 🥲
