Considering how horrible Izuku's past was even in the canon version, and that the teacher even in the canon timeline couldn't care less about everything that happened to Izuku, it makes sense as to why he got into UA. Izuku literally DID HAVE suicidal thoughts in the canon version of the story too. It's just that Horikoshi added too much comedy into the anime to make it dark. He could've gone through this path, but it wasn't required considering the light-hearted plot of MHA.
