  • Today I'm testing out 6 tiny flashlights to see how they work. My intro states "five tiny" flashlights and clearly I have six flashlights here (although one isn't as tiny, which kept throwing me off), so pardon that mistake!

Zebra light. Has six (more in advanced mode) light levels. One is so dim it'll last for weeks with it on. Just enough light to see in pitch black like if you were stuck in a cave or something. Super bright and a 90° head which is way more useful.

I have the aurora (a1, a plastic version, that cost around 20usd), and I use it daily, the lowest mode is super useful, it barely ever needs to be charged, fits into the little jean pocket, and it has a reversible clip, so you can clip it onto your baseball cap, or onto your shirt's chest pocket, jacket collar etc. if you need to do something with your hands (rolling a cigarette comes to mind). Also the highest mode has the potential to be used in a self defense sort of scenario. (Especially at night, it is literally blinding, and leaves you seeing spots for a couple of minutes after looking at it). 10/10 would buy again.

Keymate - I think the idea is that you'll have it on your keyring, so you can turn it on and then let it go, and the bar light design makes it much more useful for opening your door without having to hold the light itself. In that sense it's probably the best for what it's designed to do. Help people get through locked doors and what-have-you in the darkness.

Good personal choice! I've been using RovyVon Aurora A8 for several months. It's only 350 lumens and clear plastic body but has additional red & blue police & amber side lights. The lowest lumen is most useful - it won't kill night vision. It's comfortable to grip in your teeth - roughly the same width as a cigar. 350 lumens is still high enough for self defense & the amber is a good substitute for a candle. The police lights aren't so useful. Also, any white Chapstick cap fits perfectly as a diffuser... useful as an overhead tent lamp. Keep the videos coming! Great work! I admire your diligence & dedication. 👍🏻

The Olight I1R2 is a great little light, I've had mine hanging around my neck for the past probably 6 months since I got it and I really like it.
For my needs when usually it's only used for a few seconds the 15min runtime is just fine, and I just charge it every night.
I usually prefer no extra modes on an EDC flashlight ( absolutely no strobe for sure ) and like how I can just turn it on all the way quickly like the low mode isn't there.
I have however come to find the low 5 lumin mode handy once in a while.

recently bought it for my EDC in Bronze (with charging cable). Already have SR1 Baton II which is quite small, but this one I can have always with me on my keys. It's really tiny. 5 lumens in low mode is really bright, I was quite suprised. Usable for most of the stuff I need such light. Ie to unlock the door or walk through hallway in a building when everybody has left to find my way to elevator. In a rare occasions those 150 lumens are for shorter time but from such small flashlight really great output. If it would have flat bottom with a magnet (even without charging like Baton II) it would be absolutely great when you need to have your hands free.

You know what I want? I want a flashlight that just turns on. I am so sick of flashlights that have 500 different modes and one button that you have to practically learn morse code by the time you're done. I know, I'm probably in the minority here, but I don't understand why a flashlight has to be complicated. In the middle of an emergency situation, I don't want to have to be sitting there cycling through a half dozen modes to find what I need. I just want light.

Yes, this! How often do you need 3 brightness settings and a strobe light on your pocket flashlight?
Those extra features have their uses for specialty lights, but for an every day carry pocket light I just want something simple and easy to turn on. Also I prefer it using AA or AAA batteries over rechargeable USB ones so I can have a replacement battery available if needed.

    • @cujoedaman
      @cujoedaman 4 роки тому

@@wild1234 Even specialty lights just seem to be overloaded with unnecessary modes. I know a lot flashlights use the same chips that are pre-programmed with every mode possible, you'll see this in As Seen On TV lights where they always have the exact same five modes. They call it a "feature", but it's cheaper to to use the same chips in all of the lights because they don't have to make a program them.
Maybe replacement rechargeable Li-ion batteries would be a good compromise too, you could leave some charging and have one ready to use. My lightsabers use actual Li-ion batteries and can't be used in any other devices because the output would fry them. I did it once with a cheap LED flashlight. It "strobed" for about a second and never turned on again :P

yeah I live above 70N (70.5N) so the nights are somewhat long the regular trails/paths are rarely illuminated (if you steer off the car roads and into pedestrian paths/trails), so I needed a good lamp for my bike and I got the SRT7 from Nitecore, that thing is a blast to use on the bike, the adjustable brightness is really nice to have if you're passing by people so that you don't blind them with 950Lumens, and it's easily adjustable with gloves.
For walking I got the Nitcore HC60, that thing is way better for walking then the SRT7 since the beam is wide, and the luminosity doesn't dim after a couple of hours of use on medium, high is almost too high when we got the snow though, and I hate seeing my dog looking at me and thinking about her getting 1000lumen in her eyes :(
Still Nitecore has survived with me for two years of almost daily use in dirt, rain, snow, freezing cold temperatures.
One thing I wish is that they added the "SR" on the headlamps, because a button is really hard to hit when you got gloves on.
But having only 18650 batteries to worry about is also a big plus, I can take both lamps when camping, and use either one of them or both of them, I usually put the SRT7 inside my tent on green mode when I'm outside the tent, walk with the HC60, and when I go in, I put the SRT7 in red mode. (the green mode is to see it in the dark)

For biking I use my Lumintop B01. The flat beam means the light is focused on the trail that it's supposed to illuminate, not reaching into the eyes of peds or drivers. I don't ride much in the dark so the 18650 that came with it works fine, but if more juice is needed it fits a nice fat 21700 just fine.

I own more flashlights than my wife knows about but my every day carry is a streamlight microstream USB rechargeable. Being a firefighter/paramedic I have access to brighter lights when needed but the microstream clips on my pocket and I don't even know its there. It has a clip that can also clip on the bill of my hat meaning I can have both hands free and the light points to where I'm looking which is handy when doing things like trying to start IV's in a dark room or even when out at night of things like woods/brush fires and accident scenes.

It is always good to have a flashlight. I guess now many people use their phones, but I prefer to save the charge and use a small (or larger LOL ) flashlight. And much more convenient to clip to a hat. I have been carrying the Olight Warrior mini recently, but it is a bit heavy clipped on a hat. Once I snugged down the strap it was OK, but the Olight S1R Baton II in their line would be better if you don't need a tail switch. The closest I have is probably closer to the regular Microstreams, the Olight i3T (1xAAA) or i5T (1xAA). Does your firefighter/paramedic clothing have any loop Velcro patches? Then the right angle Olight Perun mini might also be of use to you. It comes with a hook mounting patch with bracket. About the size of a wide/tall credit card so a actually a bit wide for the strap they included in their last run/sale. I don't know what they were thinking. Great (very innovative) if you have the right clothing or hat with a loop patch. Otherwise your mileage may vary. The plus is that you can use the system with the clip left on the right angle light. Note I said the MINI version. The full sized Perun is totally different and I find the light too cool and too flat. Although I wish they would offer the mini in a neutral white, the beam on the mini through its bead TIR lens is pretty good.

I have multiple Olight i1r2's, and I love those little lights!! Olight did just release the "Pro" version of this light as well, it's a tiny bit larger but it has longer runtimes and it's even brighter somehow! So you may have another comparison video on your hands. LOL. If possible, I would love to see a comparison video between AA & AAA battery lights, some of those are really compact also.

I appreciate your variety of tests. I use public transit, so I need a light that is compact and lightweight, sufficient enough to see what’s in my purse, bright enough to light my way down the street and visible enough to drivers so that they can see me since 3 blocks of my walk don’t have sidewalks. I also need the light to be sufficiently bright that in the winter, I can see where the ice ruts and flat ice are so that I can traverse down the street safely.
Thanks for the great reviews! Now I need to shop these out.

You play it humble but I'd say you've proven yourself qualified to talk about flashlights. Sure, the specialists know their way around the electrical and luminance measurements, but you're competent at general practical testing.
Incidentally, I use the Maglite Solitaire at work and kinda wish you'd have used it in the video. I was shopping for the proverbial "pen light" to use at work a few years ago, and that was the one I settled on. And I don't regret it.
I loved the convenience test. It's like, oh, they're all perfectly good when all you need is a little bit of light, which is the real niche of these lights.

I had one like the night fox but I think it was branded Duracell, I used it for a zipper pull. It was great for its size and weight. The only down side was the batteries can be expensive. I have it around someplace. I replaced it with the olight and I love it, you forget its on your key ring and being rechargable is awesome, it reaches out further then I expected. Solid light. Streamlight usually makes good usable lights. The light with the diffuser, will do very well lighting up small rooms. I originally thought junk however during a power outrage the diffuser really exceeded my expectations. The smaller lights are great, if a light is small you are more likely to have it when you need it. Cool comparison.

I have that "Streamlight" Keymate ... and I love it. Here's the thing with a flashlight: if you don't carry it with you, then it sucks as a carry-light. That Streamlight recharges with the same power cord as my cellphone, and that, plus the fact that it blends right onto my keychain, makes it about perfect for me.
    -
I don't know if it's a complaint or just an observation, but it is more of a 'floodlight' than a spot or beam. Pretty ideal for illuminating an area as opposed to a thing.
    -
The controls are pretty straightforward as well: high beam, low-beam, or strobe. But you DO NOT have to cycle through the strobe to turn it off. I like this a lot.
    -
I had the "Nano" before that, and I liked it fine, but as it got dimmer and dimmer, the hassle and expense of acquiring new batteries made it something of a turn-off for me. Short of buying in bulk, the batteries for the Nano are almost as much as the light itself. It's worth it to get the rechargeable.

I personally own a RovyVon Aurora A1, and I can attest that it is BRIGHT! It is really small (I wear it as a necklace) and barely weighs anything. The low mode is enough to see where I’m walking, and medium is really more than enough, high allows me to see across a medium sized room (though obviously everything outside the beam is still dark, it isn’t quite “room filling”).
If you keep it on low with occasional use of medium then the battery lasts a surprisingly long amount of time, and it charges in about 30 minutes, but it should go without saying that using high constantly will chew through the battery.
(The strobe mode also makes me feel safer since I can blind a potential attacker.)

As a flashlight nerd these were really four very different levels of flashlight, the keymate is a cob light, which is for area light. The i1r2 and the aurora and nitefox are all Keychain lights, the lumintop is more of a pocket light, and the thru nite is a 21700 light. The imalent for example is a 18650 light, that has 4000 lumens and is much smaller. The aurora is really the best Keychain light out of these, I replaced a i1r2 on my keys with a aurora a5x, which is similar to the model on the video but has an additional 3 leds built into the side of the body and the whole body is glow in the dark.

Hi James, big fan here! When you do your follow up on these, would love to see you address the battery shelf life, since only one used actual replaceable batteries. If it sits in a drawer for 9 months until an emergency without power to charge em, if it doesn't hold its charge youd be screwed! Curious to see how long they hold their initial charge when not being used... Thanks for all you do for fellow consumers!

    • @donaldstrader7241
      @donaldstrader7241 4 роки тому

Yes Andrew. Sorry could not resist. I also generally have my phone, but before mobile phones with LED lights, I carried a small flashlight and still do. My current phone holds a charge long enough to be useful, and has an LED light but I still prefer to save it for things other than light and have gotten in the habit of using a flashlight over the years. I have been caught in so many places when the power failed, or the light in the bathroom was out and the small flashlight saved the day. So a preference and a habit, even though I can tell my phone to "turn on flashlight." Although I had one that could vary the brightness, I often find the phone either too bright late at night or too dim depending on the intended use.
Don't worry though, we had a plumber here and did he use a headlamp or flashlight, no he used his phone. LOL.
