I was NOT a Bon Jovi fan,but I saw this performance and it impressed the hell out of me.If you can sound this good live,just two guys and their guitars,you have the REAL stuff.I respect that tremendously.

The famous extremely talented Bee Gees went through the exact same thing!! Even after the huge success of the Fever album they were made fun of. Look at the perfect control of bends and vibrato on that solo 5:10 and his style is so identifiable, succesful or not BJ would be a whole different sound without him, and at a cost.
and lets not forget 💕the very good looks, the dreamy blue eyes, and that glorious head of long hair and devilish pretty smile and oh he can sing and the out of this world songwriting abilities!💘
Acoustic music was unheard of when Jon & Richie did this and it was a mindblower. It did truly kick off the whole Unplugged movement, and as a aficionado of acoustic guitar, I loved it.
I clearly remember seeing this live in 1989 and thinking "I want to do that same thing!" A short time later my dad bought me an electric guitar and I haven't put it down since!🤘
I’ve watched this so many times. What’s fantastic is the joy Jon seems to exude as he watches Richie punch out the lyrics in dead or alive. It’s nice to see the chemistry they have in the moment. Must be a great memory for them both.

The whole "unplugged" idea seemed so pretentious to me, but the day i saw this performance on VH1, it changed my whole outlook on music. Not even exaggerating here, this made me drop my Sax from my lap and immediately started learning guitar. 15 years later, it's still one of my favorite performances ever. On a sidenote, the band may be called "Bon Jovi", but Richie is the real beast here! An absolute monster on the strings and such raw powerful vocals. Mad respect for this man.
MTV almost didn't do this performance because they thought it would be a lull in the MTV Music Awards but after they did this that's what led to the MTV Unplugged series

I guarantee you that thousands of kids if not more picked up a guitar after this. You cant learn to sing like this, but playing the guitar was possible for most of them.
Chris J u can train your voice to sing. Sing at the top of your lungs. It takes years to develop. U won't match JBJs voice. But your voice will improve.

I just wanted to play guitar like Richie. Also saw GnR do an electric version of Patience on the American Music Awards right around the same time as this performance and Slash's solo on a '59 Les Paul sealed the deal. I was a lost cause after that!
