In this episode, I talk about skinny pens, why tipping matters, and pen leaks that defy gravity!
    Pens/Writing - (1:29)
    1) missmcpanda- Instagram - (1:31)
I recently got a Lamy Logo and I love it! Can you recommend any other pens that are similar in thickness (I have quite small hands) and that aren't too heavy? Thanks for everything you and your team do!
    2) @HotCupofLoving- Twitter - (5:58)
Does a pen really need tipping material? Stub nibs work fine w/o it so what's the deal? Also some custom grinds grind it down.
    Paper - (10:54)
    3) juliavdw- Instagram - (10:56)
When you trot out the travelers notebook in videos, I wonder if you use them yourself or are keeping them as collection pieces. They are so versatile! I assume you like the blue one best and if anything, would be using that one.
    Ink - (16:38)
    4) sparklyjavos- Instagram - (16:41)
What is the best scented ink smell for letter writing? Or best scented ink brand overall?
    Troubleshooting - (22:21)
    5) @sheann828- Twitter - (22:21)
I store all my pens nib up so they won't leak. they still collect drops of ink in the cap that get all over the pen when posted. Any tips?

I've triend both the rose and orange J. Herbin scented inks, and it's definitely not a very natural smell. More like a perfume inspired on rose/orange than actual rose and orange, that was a bit disappointing. I haven't tried the De Atramentis ones yet, maybe later. I actually really like the smell of Sailor inks, because the paints I used as a kid had the exact same scent (I think they used the same preservatives or something). So that's a whiff of nostalgia everytime I use my pen. One other possible function of scented inks would be to help with revising for exams. I've heard that chewing gum/eating a specific thing while studying, and later doing the same during the exam, might help you to remember what you learned because it's a sensory connection your brain makes. That suggests that scented inks can work the same, since you can smell them while you're writing. Of course this would work best if you're a person that likes to hand-write summaries, like I do. Though I prefer to use waterproof inks on my exams, and haven't seen a waterproof scented ink yet...

Hickory Run State Park in Pennsylvania is one of the most magical places I've been to. just to be in the mountains and away form any hustle and bustle. The trees are close friends and the birds sing wonderful melodies. It's quite peaceful to be among nature.

I've some scented De Atramentis inks in use: Apple, Orange, Chocolate, Coffee, Girl's School Ink. They really don't smell on the paper. Not even while writing except you put the nib very close to the nose. But it is great to open the bottle and smell the ink while inking up the pen.

I'm a bit of a homebody and more than a bit of an introvert, so my most magical place is probably rather boring, but we own a small cabin in the mountains of western Norway. No electricity and no phone coverage, but miles and miles of heather and cottongrass, and peaks just waiting to be visited. Don't bring anyone but the dog. It's a good time.

On Hamelin Island in Australia there is a beach not to be believed. On our honeymoon to to see an eclipse we hiked away from the golf cart resort universe and landed on a beach without any other people and tons of turquoise water. It is cliche, but boy is it beautiful there!

Another skinny pen that I just bought is the Noodler's Nib Creeper. Although I prefer larger sizes this one is alright for me posted. And maybe I'm weird, but when it comes to the smell of this and my Ahab, I like it. I agree on the Pilot E95s; it's a lovely and elegant piece, and an excellent writer.

I've tried quite a few of the De-Atramentis scented inks but alas none of them really ever smell of the thing they are supposed to , it's more a generic smell in most cases , but i've not tried them all and some of the colours are fantastic.

On the issue of ink appearing in the cap the hypothesis on temperature may be part of it but most likely based on my understanding is simply evaporation. I haven't had any issues personally with pens outright drying out but you bring up cartridges and ink in pens drying out with time. In either case that is because the liquid is evaporating out of the ink itself.
So in conclusion I'd hypothesize that if a pen is stored nib up and ink is appearing in the cap it is likely due to liquid evaporating from the pen's reservoir and condensing on the inside of the cap (the science of that is more than worth discussing in this comment alone). Thanks for the Q&A!

    • @cmac1100
      @cmac1100 6 років тому

Evaporation wouldn't cause the pigments in the ink to evaporate with the water, so condensation from the evaporation of ink would be clear water.

Man I remember going to Daiso two years ago and seeing the Daiso fountain pen. I wanted it but Dad said I should get a more expensive one form a reputable brand. I didn't think much about it until recently when I saw another fountain pen at Staples. I did some digging around, found your channel, and got myself a Pilot Metropolitan. Even if I never bought that Daiso fountain pen, I'd say it's what started me off.

Air's density is higher at a lower temperature by the ideal gas law. In other words, if the trapped air is cooling down, it will reduce in volume and, if anything, "suck" ink back from the nib or feed. My guess would be that atmospheric changes in pressure and temperature are the cause behind ink being forced out. A lower atmospheric pressure, or a higher temperature, would mean that the air trapped in the pen will want to expand to reach an equilibrium. (This is the same reason that ink escapes a pen on a plane, as the pressure in the cabin is below atmospheric)

    • @MichelCastonguay
      @MichelCastonguay 7 років тому

it's actually the 21% Oxygen that expands when the pens is getting warmer. The rest of the air we breathe (roughly 79%) is nitrogen and this gas would not expand if the Oxygen was removed.

Noodler's Ahab pens constantly accumulate ink on the girp, it's one of the most frustrating things ever.
I love the Ahab (I have at least four of them), but I cannot use it anywhere except at a crafting desk because you're pretty much guaranteed to get inky fingers using an Ahab.
The problem isn't limited to the Ahab, but many pens seal off the cap at the front edge of the grip so as long as you don't grip right up beside the nib then you're fine.
Ironically, the Noodler's Neponset does properly seal off the Nib, and I think it's just about the only one from Noodler's that does, which is a bit of a shame since I actually like the cheaper "vegital resin" pens but thus far most of them aren't very practical for everyday use.

Mine is up in the mountains in Kentucky. My family owns 7 acres of land and I have a view of an oak tree that is over 100 years old outside my window. We used to play in that oak tree and sometimes I'll sit outside and write while my Mastiff rolls around in grass. It's pretty awesome.
Also, I've tried heat setting this darn eyedropper pen that came with my Heart of Darkness and it will NOT stop dropping gobs of ink into the cap. I'm fed up. I think it's just going to be a decoration...unless someone has suggestions. I thought it would be cool for really long writing sessions, that's why I even messed with it in the first place.

QOTW: I have a few magical places. First, Paluma in northern Queensland, Australia. It's a small area of tropical rainforest and it's just lovely. I went there as a child and always dream of going back. Second, there's a small beach near my house called Burwood Beach (Newcastle Australia).. it's got a massive cliff face behind the sand (if that makes sense) and it's so pretty! Have to walk around the rocks to get to it. Third is my study/studio. As an artist, having a place in my apartment that I can create/journal in is incredibly important to me and has been a dream all my life. Now that I finally have it, I'm so happy and going in there makes me feel so calm.
Ps, Love the mention of the deodorant on letters to Rachel. I would have found it super endearing myself and it made me giggle. Very sweet and a good way to make it smell with what you had available.

Question for next week. I have noticed with different pens and different inks that sometimes when I go to start a word or cross a t that it doesn't start laying ink down right away. For the t especially it doesn't start until I hit the line that I've already made. Is this an alignment problem, angle problem, or rotation problem? Thanks for all that you do!

my theory is that a vacuum is being drawn when the pen is uncapped. I've noticed that with some of my snap caps at least. I know some vintage pens had holes drilled in the sides of the cap to prevent that.

Do you have any recommendations on a good dark purple ink that has consistent flow even after long scribbles? I'm in the middle of transcribing a story I did on my old iPad onto a notebook. I noticed the Private Reserve ink I use starts skipping after a few hundred words no matter what fountain pen or rollerball I use. The only ink that seems to have the least problem is an old black Parker Quink, but I don't like the color.

I am sure that you guys have been asked before, but why do you not have a showroom and sell things directly from your location? (I have heard that you can arrange a direct pick up if you are in the area, but you know what I mean) Do you just not think it would be profitable enough to be worth it? Legal or zoning issues perhaps? Space may be an issue now, but surely you had room at some point. I remember you said once that you expanded to the third building somewhat speculatively...
