That's how it works in Mordhau. If someone's shield is raised and you kick it, they get stunned. Aside from the constant groaning and ear-rape when your base gets raided, this looks pretty fun~. I'd like to see more videos! EDIT: Ok it's been confirmed. The dev plays Chivalry in addition to Rust, lol. Skill based combat. Very interesting! That being said, I highly recommend 3rd person. normally not a fan whenever a usually solo youtuber has a friend in a video but with rust and hopefully more renown, its actually really fun to watch whenever bubs got someone with him. also the nonstop grunting reminds me of that "Super Mario Bros Next Gen AAA" video where its "realistic" and hes constantly grunting and his shoes are squeaking on the bricks

Have you played mordhau or mount and blade? Similar combat, try learning feints, lagging and swinging. You can change your hit box with your movement. Example, when swinging a sword, swing your cursor to extend the reach of the swing or delay/speed up the swing.
