Great footage of the 37 dragging the first 3 sets of class 313s for scrap to Eastleigh. I do wonder how stretched the 377 fleet will be with no replacement stock!
They may use Gatwick Expresses Class 387/2's as i've seen them more often now doing a southern service from London Bridge to Ore or East Grinstead. Or Even Victoria To Brighton.
It is sad to see them withdrawn, but they really were just designed for short commuter runs, and not the longer routes Southern used them on. Also they were the first dual voltage EMUs in this country, and for that alone they should be remembered well. They certainly earned their keep !
Great footage of the depot and seeing the old units go being pulled by a great sounding tractor. I'm pleased I got some footage of the 313s a few years ago as nothing last forever. Sub from me btw 👍🏻
Seen the photos of it and glad you posted this video . I'm an old school person and even though these had no loo's on them I'll kinda miss them as been on most of the Southern 313s . Good video footage and thanks for sharing it
Someone's gone through the effort of stripping them down and removing the shoegears, they may be stored now but certainly don't have any operational future
I’m both quite sad and glad that 313s are been withdrawn. My only issues with them is that I didn’t liked they were running Portsmouth Harbour to Brighton services, it’s too long. I went on it from Brighton to Fratton on them, and it’s not very pleasant journey. It can get very easily packed from Brighton to Barnham or Chichester. Worst of all there are no toilets which is unforgivable. These units aren’t made for longer journeys, they are far suitable for shorter journeys for Portsmouth & Southsea - Littlehampton. But I do enjoy seeing them on my train spotting days.
Joke isn’t it that they use these units to run an hour journey. Such as Portsmouth Harbour to Brighton, which is like hour and half journey which is ridiculous as it gets packed quickly at Brighton. Last time I went on them which was in winter, went from Brighton to Fratton. As I come from Fareham all Southampton trains are 377 and I always catch that. But on that particular occasion Southampton services were cancelled so had no choice on getting on Portsmouth Harbour on 313, and it was horrible. Been squished in like tinned sardines until train got into Barnham or Chichester, also it was cold as they had all the windows open. Never in my life wanted to get to my destination quicker so I can get out. I’m glad they are going, but will do miss seeing them as they are the remaining units from the old BR days. As I said before they are made for short journeys, they could of kept them for Portsmouth- Littlehampton and keep 377 for Portsmouth - Brighton.
there they go…serving us well for 47 years and this is what they get as a thank you they get torn apart and ripped to shreds…you will be missed class 313!…i wish you 313s in museums well bc the rest of ya fleet will meet the scrapers torch…sad end..they deserved better…
Hello there old friend :-). This is indeed an excellent and enchanting video but its extremely sad that the Southern class 313's are to sadly retire after over 45 years in service. They were I would describe the king of the Southern Railway of all EMU's Matt if I dare describe the class 313's :-). Are you planning on seeing the class 313 Farewell Railtour Matt if I dare ask? I thought I might ask so. Take care and many happy wishes :-). From your old friend Foxy in Brighton, East Sussex, England, UK :-D :-D :-).
it is sad that the Class 313,s have gone for scrap it is a waste of a good train my Favourite Line for travelling on the class 313,s was the North London Line From Stratford to Richmond & From Stratford to Clapham Junction
I can’t believe the time has come, but I’m very upset & angry to see these amazing & beloved EMUs to go to… I personally wish anyone or group of people to preserved a Class 313 as it will be great for anyone to remember when travel on these units when they were in service. It would be nice if the Bluebell had one as they have Horsted Keynes and that station was until 1963 was terminus for electric trains from Hayward Heath. That would be great for the Bluebell today as not only running a 1960s EMU, but a 1980s EMU as well. That would be something different for the Bluebell to preserved Southern Region history from the 1880s to the 1980s with steam, diesel & electric traction to see & ride for the future. But sadly, I’m guessing it not possible now since these units will be all gone by the time that happing. As I just said, I’m really upset & angry to see these units gone to… And I’m very sickened by the fact they’re going to be ‘you know’ when they get to ‘you know where’.
You’re the only one who loves these they are BLOODY AWFUL!! Good riddance NO TOILETS NO DISABLED access either they replaced the 377’s for what reason we shall NEVER KNOW 2010 now they’ve gone BYE BYE 👋🏽 GREAT NORTHERN had 16 they’ve all been scrapped now best place of ya check Wikipedia some are in storage others scrapped
First unit of Class 313 will be saved for museum. Also other PEP units are still survived (Class 314's 209 unit working for hydrogen train and Class 315's 856 unit has completed 4-car saved). Unknown for 507/508 yet.
I saw them come into service in 76 living in Hertford. Now live in Havant. So I have had these units almost all my life. Going to feel strange without them 😢
“They have blue-star capability , RA5 route availability, and there’s still things only they can do.” according to DRS. For comparison most other newer locomotives in service are at least RA7. Other RA5 locomotives that stuck around were the 20's and 31's before cost and annual storage periods finally saw them off. I feel the 1750hp and respectable tractive effort also made the 37's more appealing than pairs of type 2s.
Can't say I'll be sorry to see them go. I've never been a fan of them, and putting them on the Portsmouth - Brighton service was just plain ridiculous.
Strip them for parts as its such a waste of similar parts to the 150s, currently wales have a train shortage, refurbish them and convert them to diesel
@@oParkLikesStuff Southeastern have brand new 707 sets class they also own class 466 and 465 which are now 30 odd years old YOU forget GOVIA who own southern USED TO OWN SOUTHEASTERN until they screwed up
In 1976 replacing the Cravens 105 they were a massive leap forward. Ok no view through the cab window but in terms of comfort they were dramatically better
Good riddance. They were a rotten design even for the services they were built for (Great Northern suburban). Apart from the bogies - a simple design with good ride quality. I done know why these are not refurbished and put under new stock. Bogies are an expensive component.

I think southeastern has sent some 377/5s back to southern, SE has used some stored 465’s

i remember them when i was a little spotter and i stopped in 1988-89 so they have certainly earnt their keep
Awsome shots sir weĺl done
Thanks shame about the wind but it couldn't be helped. Better luck with the next drags.
Doesn't seem that long ago we were saying farewell to the 421, 423s that were parked in the top end of the depot

What are actually replacing these? Southern retired the 455s with no real replacement and by the looks of it the same is happening with the 313s.
Thanks Ian Hunt for that.
They’re actually going to be stored

They used to be ON great northern to Moorgate no toilets then either a HOUR on a train they’ve all been scrapped now as have the 317’s

Although I don’t travel to Brighton often but putting them on in the rush hour as a 3 car unit was out of order better travelling on the tube.
Excellent video 👍👍

Good riddance to bad rubbish!
Why would the Bluebell want one? They do not have a 3rd rail.
Unfortunately, the NRM are preserving one.

One thing that confuses me is how has the 37 lasted so long compared to any other trai !?
The 37s aren't packed to buggery with football fans every month at Falmer ;-)

Where are they being taken to be scrapped?
Eastleigh Hampshire
Are they similar to 315s? Genuine question, I'm new to trains
who's going to the class 313 farewell service on April 29th this year?
cuz I am.
I think this is a good thing-another use of a 37
How do you find out about this kind of move, e.g. times, dates, locations?
I checked live.rail-record.co.uk. I sometimes check realtimetrains too but the working was on rail record 24hrs before RTT

FINALLY THOSE RELICS ARE GOING !!! Good riddance… so they replaced by 377s ? Why not new ones ?? Everyone else has brand news sets why can’t southern?
Not everyone else lol, Southeastern dosent lol. Southern also have some trains from 2014
@@oParkLikesStuff Southeastern have brand new 707 sets class they also own class 466 and 465 which are now 30 odd years old YOU forget GOVIA who own southern USED TO OWN SOUTHEASTERN until they screwed up
Shame people hate on the 313s while the interiors can be dirty they can sound amazing
@@Kandlelite 707’s are from 2017 so I wouldnt say brand new
@@oParkLikesStuff compared to 1976 YES they are new !
I know a lot of people will be upset by this, but personally I really didn’t like the 313, they were horrible to ride on
True but it’s sad seeing it turned into scrap metal plus them 313s have had many loved years. But you are correct they were horrible to ride.
Absolutely agreed they were too
313s were amazing to ride on for sounds of course the interiors and exteriors current state is questionable..
In 1976 replacing the Cravens 105 they were a massive leap forward. Ok no view through the cab window but in terms of comfort they were dramatically better
I agree. I live in Glasgow and there was folk sad when the 314 were retired but honestly never liked them. They were uncomfy and not all that fast.
Talk about the end of an era
Time to start saying your goodbyes.😭
They will not be missed by the majority of folk.
313 202 / 313 217 but what was the other one
214
Shame see the former silverlink 313s going
Good riddance to 47 year old
Relics horrid to travel on
🚂👍
the curse of any outdoor video. Wind Noise!
Soon enough, it’s the end of the PEP
I'm afraid so bang and the peps are gone
Seems a waste to me, the old slam door trains were around for decades, these have only been around a short time in comparison.
They've been running 47 years, so actually a bit longer than, say, the 4VEPs (38 years) and 4CIGs (41 years).
There’s a 50 year old train older than these going for now in London they are to be scrapped later
Good riddance. They were a rotten design even for the services they were built for (Great Northern suburban).
