I am extremely fortunate as I live south of Moab Utah in a bortal 2 sky. Moab has been diligently working on their dark sky certification and we do have three dark sky locations that are listed as such. Arches National Park, Dead Horse point, and Canyon Lands National park are all within a thirty to forty minute drive. I am excited to see our small community take dark skies seriously. I have only recently got back into astro imaging after taking about ten years off. My how the tech has changed ! That is one of the reasons I have taken the hobby up again. Hi Trevor, Bortle 7 here and just use a UV IR cut filter for broadband targets. Try to maximise shooting when Moon is not up and collect lots of subs. Works well but I know it would take a fraction of the time if the sky was darker. Most people are so cut off from the night sky in a city they don’t care if they make the problem worse. Keep up the good work!

I have very fond memories of a sky full of the Milky Way and stars upon stars growing up in the Upstate NY area. Over the past few years have returned home for the final times and over 35+ years, you see maybe 1/4 of what was once present in the night sky. Nothing surpasses the personal calm and peace while sitting under a canvas of stars. I live in Washington DC now…and remember fondly my childhood days laying in the grass watching satellites pass until my parents yelled it was time to come inside.

I live as well at the edge of a town and the Bortle map list me at a 6 however the resent addition of a apartment complex just finished up about 5 months ago and their lights are huge and bright. I noticed in you time lapse how many stars were around Orion. I can basically see the main constellation itself and no longer see the smaller stars. I almost wonder if my house is in a Bortle 7 to 8 now. I do visual so I may be selling everything I bought last year. I kind of regret getting back into Astronomy just because of the light pollution here and getting to dark sky’s is over 1 1/2 hours away.

    Hi Trevor !
still great video as always. You are really lucky with both Bortle 6 and 3. I live in Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. On February 12, 2024, according to the Lunar Calendar, it is Tet Holiday. I went outside and saw Betelgeuse and Rigel, I knew it was the constellation Orion. I quickly ran into the house, took out my tripod and Iphone XS Max and started taking photos. The result I got was that the sky in Hanoi was very bright (Bortle 7), the star Orion appeared faint, but still a wonderful experience for me.
I just wish that in Vietnam, people understand more about light pollution and hope that Vietnam has an IDSP
Best wishes to Trevor and all of you from Vietnam 🇻🇳🇻🇳🇻🇳.

Can mono help when shooting from light polluted area? I am planning to go mono to avoid risks buying OSC cameras. Will mono help?

Yeah, it will help if you use the gas filters (Ha, Hß, OIII, SII, NII)

Columbus Ohio in parts is a bottle 8 other parts of Columbus are worse. I found a place in a small town 20 minutes from here that's a bottle 5 and its awesome out there. If I ever get to a bottle 2 or 3 someday that will be awesome.

Oh NOW you tell me??? After I move from Utah to Knoxville? I so miss having Bortle 1-2 just an hour away. Now I can only go from 7 to like 4 if I go all the way up into GSM Natl Park. 😮‍💨

@@MountainFisher Lake Chilhowee is below though. That's the same distance as going to Cades Cove.

@@joeguetzloff4465 Take 336 out of Maryville up to the Foothills Parkway that ends at Chilhowie. I think you take happy valley rd to get to it and it has two overlooks that may be the same distance, but I guarantee it won't be crowded.
