Yessss! I loved this demo and you explain things so thoughtfully and clearly ❤ sound samples rule! last bit of video was absolutely heavenly. Thank you so much
You and the team are walrus really killed it on this. It’s already finding its way into an ongoing place in my aux set up here in the studio and I think that’s gonna be a super high value place for it to be long term. Instant dreaminess.
I clicked on this thinking what a ridiculous amount of knobs it had in your thumbnail. I’m up for a laugh with this one I thought. I watched all your video, no skipping and am really seriously thinking about buying one. What a fantastic machine. It’s not cheap, but you’re getting about five pedals really. Just what I’ve been looking for. And you explained everything perfectly clearly, not to mention creating some very tasty ambient guitar. WOW.
right out of the gate, really happy to see Walrus finally fully integrate midi for their non-mako pedals, and with a pedal like this it's absolutely make or break. Really impressed by this already, of all the granular-adjacent pedals of the past few years I feel like this one is the most "microcosm alternative" so far, and I mean that in a good way. Obviously it's not a 1:1 in that regard, but it seems to offer greater control over some of the specifics and the grain sampler is really nice. I've stopped picking up devices that I don't *need* but I may very well GAS myself into making an exception for this one
@@markjohnstonofficial I’m already thinking about how I could use the CC waveform generator on my MC6 Pro to send out of phase waves to the mix controls and effectively crossfade overlapping effects in and out. Probably makes no sense to non-MIDI folks but I’m sure you’ve got the idea.
Literally googled midi and stereo chorus pedal yesterday. Love your hard work Mark. You are so influential in the worship genre. Thank you for your hard work!!!
This seems like it competes pretty favorably with some of the Chase Bliss granular/delay pedals like Mood and Habit. It's much more flexible and useful for those who dont love the bleep bloops. Unfortunately it's more expensive than those. Would love to try it out some day.
you speak so emphatically in a hushed voice. it feels like you’re my dad angrily yelling at me about something you love while trying not to wake up the baby
I didn’t really understand the statement about the delay 16:15 presents as mono, can you elaborate? I think you were saying if you feed it mono they delays are mono but if fed stereo delays are stereo?
I think he means the chorus is spread over the stereo field. So as the delay is mono, meaning it’s not spread across the field on its own (eg, no ping pong ) however if the stereo chorus is activated it will spread the delay across its own stereo field thus widening the sound of the delay with it.
With all of these amazing layerings of various effects, tones and textures, the only thing left to do is utilize your imagination and strategize how to incorporate your experimentation into songs or instrumental tracks. The settings around the 39:27 mark are like having the genius of Mike Ratledge of Soft Machine in a box! But at four and a half bills, one must (VERY) seriously desire what it offers!
How is it in the effects loop of the quad vortex? I tried the mako series and had so much digital clipping even messing with the send and return levels…..
I love granular stuff, and I have to pretend this doesn't exist and get some midi knobs set up on my Norns. I don't neeeeeeed any other pedals right now 😅
I love it. I'm having a hard time working it into my setup, at least in my brain, when I've already got great delays and reverbs. I feel like this could make several pedals on my board redundant. If I can think of a way to work an El Cap or Meraki into the mix, I might have to go for it to try it. Mark, how do you like the stereo imaging on the chorus compared to units like the DC-2W?
I had a Microcosm but sold it. You can get good things to happen but it’s a hit and miss machine. I’ve preordered the Walrus because it’s much easier to guarantee a result and it’s easier to see and understand what’s going on. The parallel aspect to this pedal is a real plus for me too. The ability to ‘stack’ each effect and mix it with a dry signal is awesome. This stops things getting too much and affecting each other. I’d choose this over the Microcosm. Hope this helps.
I get this is an artist collab and the marketing makes it seem like it’s a test run to show off their new processing chip but just having the grain section as a standalone pedal seems like a no brainer, especially competing with the chase bliss units
@@michaelloyola323 they already have two granular units available on the market: Lore and Fable. Granted they’re not stereo but they do exist and are both great pedals.
@@saggygnaw I hate to be that guy (but I am), aside from them being in mono, Lore and Fable have no midi control, can't receive beat clock, and don't even have preset banks. They do sound good, but considering the range of sounds you can get out of them, it really limits the utility when you can't so much sync to a tempo or save and recall presets (which they already implemented in earlier pedals like the monument and slotva). If anything it kind of seems like those were the tests/experiments to see if they could wade into granular/weirder delays a little bit. It's for good reason that pedals like the Microcosm and CB Mood have full midi integration, just saying!
@@redminus yeah I’m well aware and never said either have those features, so you’re definitely that guy... I literally have all of these pedals (Lore, Fable, CB Mood MKII, Microcosm, & Qi though the latter has not yet arrived) most of which are on a two tiered MIDI compatible monster of a custom built 26” x 18” pivoting pedalboard that weighs at least 50 lbs., so I do actually know what I’m talking about. Honestly the proper correction would be that Lore is not in fact a proper granular pedal but rather has the reverse features available in the grain section of the Qi.
@@saggygnaw hell yeah brother, I'm not even arguing, I have a similar setup so I feel we're on the same page. My only point of contention is that I don't think Fable is any substitute for a clocked/midi-enabled granular in most situations regardless of how good it sounds. OP was saying Walrus should release the Grains section as standalone, and I'm not even saying they should, but I don't think Fable fills that niche at all. Purely personal preference I suppose, but yeah I already said I'm that guy
this is a great pedal..the only thing I dont like about it is no stereo image on delay without feeding a stereo sound into it first,,,would prefer stereo off the bat....if they done a firmware update to have this I"d buy it...
i guess i can see how they think it warrants that price range, it just doesn't really blow away or really deliver like a pedal from that price range. Multi effects pedal with some baked in tricks.
It's 4 pedals that even in their simplest forms would cost 1-150 or more in one box, plus 3 footswitches, stereo I/O and MIDI. Not a bad deal when these are built by hand in the USA and have a lifetime warranty.
@@ShaighJosephson no they are charging a reasonable price given the costs that go into developing, manufacturing, marketing, and shipping products built in the United States. Perhaps instead of making baseless accusations of collusion you should instead spend some time learning about basic economics and supply chain logistics.

Presets and clock is such a nice touch

Amazing stereo
Very cool pedal. Well done to all involved
I was waiting for this
Awesome demo! Love the guitars, love the pedal, love the bass!
Obsessed with this bass. Jennings short scale bass and it’s like the most comfortable bass I’ve ever owned. Helps that it sounds excellent
@markjohnstonofficial I need a "Bass for guitar players" video from you! Gonna check out the Jennings!
Here for the real time voice demo!!

You did this pedal justice, sounds a bit like the Knobs channel, great vibe.
Oh My Gosh! That sounds amazing. And your playing is utterly amazing.
Ordered mine! I love the feature where you click on the button and it sustains the delay... Will definitely be using that. Nice playing brother!
Yeah this one feels like it’s got or focus on being super useful which I dig.
Going to use it with my Handpan!
i love this... must need NOW!
It sort of makes me think of the chase bliss mood but with more effects and more controls.
This sounds great, and this is a great demo. I'd love to see how this plays with an ACS1 MkII or just generally get your thoughts on the new ACS1.
NOOOO! im broke. at the moment. ok, get it. earn more. nice one walrus
You should release that into rhythm as a jam track 🔥🔥🔥
Dang! this is gonna' be a long one, guess I'll make some popcorn and get ready to hunker down...

Great Demo in the beginning, then the pedal became boring quickly! another interesting gadget.
Really cool pedal! But what I really wanna know is the source of the drums in the beginning of the video! 😮
