The Sheik was before my time in watching wrestling, however what people say about him is the stuff of legend. They should make a movie about him, or at least a documentary!
None of today's wrestlers possess the same wrestling style that The Sheik had. Not only would The Sheik carve a road map on your forehead with a fork or a pencil, he would also hurl a fireball to your face.
The Sheik lived 20 minutes from me. He lived in Webberville Michigan. Did lots of local high school shows back in the 1970's & would growl at us when we were in high school.
There was nothing like a Saturday night in Cobo Arena, Downtown Detroit, 7:30pm, the first bell, and Terry Sullivan, or Chuck Allen, center ring announcing the participants for the first match of the evening, in the mid 70's. Most often than not it was a young guy whose dad, Angelo, was a pretty good wrestler, and younger brother Randy had his career, yet in front of him. Leaping Lanny Poffo.
I loved how he called Gange doing the Dusty finish before it was even the Dusty Finish...it was the Eddie Graham finish. Every booker who learned under Graham did this finish...Watts, Hart, Rhodes, Sullivan, Wahoo, Hayes...did this finish wherever they booked. It was well known that Gange and McMahon would call Eddie Graham if they needed a finish. I think I remember reading that what killed Detroit and Toronto was when the Sheik booked himself over Andre the Giant.
Grew up watching these guy's & other kayfabe greats at Maple Leaf Gardens. Hannibal, can you ask some of the veterans if they have any good stories of Toronto?
The sheik scared me so much . Hes why I ever watched big time wrestling . He was the most convincing hero ever. I loved piper but that was the problem. I was legit scared of the o g sheik. Sheik scary, piper very funny. Not the sheik! Sheik best heel ever. A real heel. Piper the funniest heel ever. All heels have to back it up. So piper was good but not scary.
That why they say the owner of the wrestling companies shouldn't book the matches. Because the owner would book themselves as the the top star and Champion. That what moolah did. Moolah was the owner that book women's wrestlng.Because of that moolah was able control women's wrestling and book herself as Champion. That why Toni rose and Judy Martin never became women world wrestling champion.
The Shiek was one of the first true Villains in Wrestling History! Another Icon to put Lansing Mich on The Map...Much Love and Respect💯

Yeah, it was to the point where nobody had beat him, and the fans burned out of him being undefeated.

The Shiek killed Detroit because he insisted on going over every night. Fans had enough
One of the most attacked wrestlers of all time? Well, his home base was Detroit, wasn't it? There you go...lol
What's up with all the skulls in the background...by the way, I like it...just wondering?
