A lovely, fresh-sounding performance. Yes, the pianist should have been named too - this was not just accompaniment. We are hearing an equal partnership of two fine musicians.
I donno how I feel about this performance, everybody seems to love it. But for me personally there is something missing here. I mean I really liked the conversation between the piano and the voice. You could really tell that they were playing with this aspect on an interesting and yes fresh level. However I feel like the woman didn't give this piece the emotional and vocal depth it deserves. This song is supposed to really touch you with strongly conveyed emotions. It is supposed to just express deep affection. And I feel like the woman lacked in this aspect and well ignored it to some point. In the high notes she is very good but her lower notes feel somewhat tense and not sounding and powerful enough to convey what they are supposed to convey. But then again this is just my personal opinion and reaction to this performance. However as I said before the sometimes playful conversation between the two voices in this performance was interestingly refreshing but still missing the point of this piece.
@@komperakompera2190 I think the composition is powerful enough to be best without more expression. I guess when you have heard more emphatic versions, then this might be thought flat. Same when someone plays Beethoven 5th faster, everyone else's then seems slow!
Widmung Friedrich Rückert You my soul, you my heart, You my rapture, O you my pain, You my world in which I live, My heaven you, to which I aspire, O you my grave, into which My grief forever I’ve consigned! You are repose, you are peace, You are bestowed on me from heaven. Your love for me gives me my worth, Your eyes transfigure me in mine, You raise me lovingly above myself, My guardian angel, my better self!
I've heard this many times but this seems to me to be perfect Lieder - the piano watching the singer and they do the whole thing together. It was wonderful. Thank you to both soprano and pianist.
Du meine Seele, du mein Herz, Du meine Wonn’, O du mein Schmerz, Du meine Welt, in der ich lebe, Mein Himmel du, darein ich schwebe, O du mein Grab, in das hinab Ich ewig meinen Kummer gab. Daß du mich liebst, macht mich mir wert, Dein Blick hat mich vor mir verklärt, Du hebst mich liebend über mich, Mein guter Geist, mein beßres Ich!
Direct and natural. What strikes me about this performance is that it is far gentler, more intimate, and less declamatory than what one generally hears in this Lied. And without wishing in the least to denigrate other versions, I must say that (at least to my mind and ears) this approach works very well.
@@dlefil1364 Why unexpectedly? This was a song of dedication from Schumann to his new bride Clara and as such was an intimate lied which to my mind is sung better by the ladies.
You're totally right: this Lied tends to be performed with too much solemnity. As a matter of fact, solemnity being already in the score, there's no need at all to stress it...
Stunning! This difficult lied feels so easy and natural to you as if you had composed it. Many wishes for a very rewarding career to a true artist and and beautiful human being
Hello. Your performance and sensitivity are superb. This is one of the best performances of this wondrous song I have ever heard. You feel it absolutely. Congratulations to both of you. :-)
You my soul, you my heart, You my rapture, O you my pain, You my world in which I live, My heaven you, to which I aspire, O you my grave, into which My grief forever I’ve consigned! Translations by Richard Stokes, author of The Book of Lieder (Faber, 2005)
I recently read that those two short phrases towards the end following the singer's last note, are the opening phrase from Schubert's "Ave Maria." Schumann included this because the "Ave Maria" was Clara's favorite of the Schubert songs.
Miss Broabdent: I´m delighfully surprised. A very sincere and musical rendition of this perennial favorite lied. The pianist is up to your brilliance. His name should have been on the general information. I´m a voice teacher (vocal technique and repertoire) at the Rio de Janeiro Music Conservatoire. Wish you succes in your carreer. You will certainly become a star, which you deserve! Sorry for my English...
I play piano and can't sing, so I feel ok here stating that great singing is much harder to find than great piano-playing. AB here gives one of the best performances of Widmung, perhaps the best. Perhaps if the sound was less distorted on Amy Elling's that would be equal.
DEDICA Tu mia anima, tu mio cuore, tu mia gioia, tu mio dolore, tu mio mondo, in cui vivo, tu mio cielo, dove volo.
David Steven Tabbat: You are right....the way to double the length in a program is to sing this in another language, such as my lyrics in English... done as a hymn.
Oh my god. I can’t handle this. My mom used to sing this to me every night as a lullaby. I’m crying while watching this
thats lovely! my mom didnt sing but played this on piano whole of my childhood :)))
Very good you come from a good home.

As a German native speaker I can understand the text very well. Well done!
When you study voice you have to spend lots of time to learn the correct pronunciation...❤❤
Yes, her pronunciation ist very good. She should perhaps train a bit more the difference between the pronunciation of 'sch' and 'ch' in words.

You my soul, you my heart,
you my bliss, O you my pain,
you my world in which I live,
my heaven you, to which I float,
O you my grave, into which
my grief forever I've consigned.
You are repose, you are peace,
you are bestowed on me from Heaven.
Your love for me gives me my worth,
your eyes transfigure me in mine,
lovingly you raise me above myself,
my good spirit, my better self!

Thanks!
Bravo to have your translation
Such a beautiful gift from the heart of Schumann.
This performance stands out to me. Excellent, plus Amy's smiling warmth is joyful to view. Also, she seems as though to be a very lovely lady.
My favourite Schumann Lied. "Ave Maria" skilfully embodied within the accompaniment ending.

I sang this for a competition, and the judge told me I shouldn't be smiling while singing this song since it's supposed to be sad. Whaaaattt
Um. I'm working on this piece with my voice instructor right now and... Schumann wrote this for his wife... Yeah, the judge is sincerely incorrect.
Sad?! That's crazy! It's ebullient, ecstatic, and enthralling!

I love this, but can someone explain me why the Liszt piano solo transcription of this lieder is nearly twice longer ?
Because it was written as a bravura piece for piano alone.
Beautiful! Pitty it's such a short version of this masterpiece...
So far as I know, this is not a "short version." The song itself is very short, just as we hear it here.
