- A documentary about the SS Richard Montgomery. The remains of this second world war Liberty ship lie semi-submerged in the Thames estuary. There are currently over 1500 tons of explosives left on board. This documentary looks into the danger the wreck still presents.
I have sailed passed it too many times to remember, but I do remember the feeling of relief when I got safely by.
My boat went to Dunkirk in 1940 and then the rest of the war patrolling the Thames Estuary looking for mines, she was based at Chatham but moored at Queensborough just a short distance from the SS Montgomery.
Been queens borough it’s on the swale right?
If it went up it would only do £15 of damage as this area is a shit hole
6:49 Needs to be fixed by 2015....
2020 : .............
With current failings around the world this year and brexit to put further strain let's hope it holds together for another two or three decades.
@@earthman6700 Ok so in the last 10 minutes I got 1 comment and 3 likes on my comment... Seems youtube is recommending this video to people. Maybe a sign lol
@@LeeFall You made a valid comment! 👍
Apparently if it explodes it will be worse than the Lebanese explosion
It's probably fine to leave it. If it does go off and creates a 1m high wave, I don't see how that would be any different to a 1m wave during, not even a storm... Sea state 4 on the Beaufort scale has waves of 1-2m and you can get that in just a moderate wind. Storm waves are much larger.
I love the fact you have a blooper reel at the end of the video
Great place to build an Airport Boris.
what's up with the bloopers reel at the end lol
Cheapest plan is to lob a grenade on it. Put it on live TV and make it a public event. I live in near it and don't mind if it blows out some shitty windows. The explosion alone is worth it all day long.
Blitzaufweise but won’t it cause some sort of a tsunami?
You don’t care about having your windows blown out until you’re picking shards of glass out of your face.
Some experts predict it could cause such a large explosion that it could setoff the gas storage units in Kent, which could cause far more damage than widows going through
@@antonclark3420 can they not just empty the storage?
Dear narrator;
You keep referring to this ship as the USS Richard Montgomery. USS being the designation for a United States Ship, IE military. The S.S. Richard Montgomery is a commercial Steam Ship operated by the U.S. Merchant Marine, NOT a U.S. Government entity. While most people may consider this a trivial point, it is not. In that IF this were in fact a U.S. government vessel, the U.S. government could be liable for it's cleanup, or restitution for any damages caused should a catastrophe occur. Being that it is not a U.S. government vessel, the U.S. government is not liable. Therefore the only liable party would have been whatever insurance company issued a policy for this vessel. Since no claim was filed (at least not for damages caused by the cargo) in a timely manner, that insurance company even if it still exists, has no financial liability.
Thereby, making all liability the responsibility of whatever British government entity is in charge of such waterways, and dealing with hazards to navigation.
Hence the reason nothing has, or will be done until after the catastrophe, God forbid such ever occurs.
I think there is a bit of a grey area for government liability. As I understand it...during World War II the Merchant Marine fleet was in effect nationalized, that is, the U.S. Government controlled the cargo and the destinations, contracted with private companies to operate the ships, put guns and Navy personnel (Armed Guard) on board. The Government trained the men to operate the ships and assist in manning the guns through the U.S. Maritime Service.
The Paddle steamer Waverley includes this wreck on its trips from London to Medway, we circled the wreck in 2012 before going up the Medway.
The yanks offered to clear it at the time as it was easy back then but now the offer is off the table & it's more volatile & with our modern compensation culture nobody wants to be the person in office that does it & risks there bonus....
The Yanks had a lot to hide on the ship, mostly those that were in contravention of the Geneva convention.
I’m just waiting for some part of the ship to break and for the bombs to go off
Imagine the shock wave up the Thames and the Medway rivers!
i live here.. beach is top of my road.. often sit up there looking at this ...
Setup a camera in that direction. If a copper azide reaction happens there WILL be an explosion.
absolutely fascinating video, thanks for posting !
"No risks in the short term"... Unless a terrorist group detonates the ship... And at this point the video is 11 years old.
i think that something should definitely be done about this as this is not just a tourist attraction as it is also a deadly threat to the island and surrounding areas , it raises concern that this ship could explode and cause widspread damage and even death's on the island and surrounding areas, as their is not only a human cost but also a financial cost!
Only six million pounds to encase it, eh? Meaning, it won't be done, because that would be sensible.
Well times up government... it's 2015
Michael Hudson what have they done about it?
..........it was still there on 23 April 2017 and probably still be sticking out of the water in another 70 years.
on the bright side, since we can still see it we know the sea levels haven't risen too much right? lol
Welp...still hasn't gone off yet...
2024
Great video, really interesting, many thanks
What really pisses me off that instead of dealing with this wreck at the very least moving public intrests away from it . they want to build a F**king airport right next door to the wreck.
sheer and utter madness.
it will sink westminser wow
dude i live in sheerness and now they say that theres hardly anything left on they anyway
It really pisses me off. Some people are kind enough to post nice videos which we can watch for FREE! Then there is always some knobheads that come to criticize and write bullshit!
Wasn’t this video featured in a movie lol?
didnt you notice the 16:9 clips being squidged into a 4:3 frame ?????
wat show is this and wat channel
The Queen's Diamond Jubilee must have been risky then...
I can see the mast in the distance from my garden ......
Simple. I can do it for you if you want. First pump sand off the ocean floor and cover the wreck with sand. Then add concrete over that. Now if it ever did go off it would be contained. This also would crate an island where the wreck is so ships would not run into the wreck. Put an automated light house on the island and restrict any one from going onto the island. Now we are not talking a small island. You would need to add so much sand and concrete to block off most the harbor. but that is the price you pay to protect peoples lives. You could in time dig a new opening to the harbor to the North. Hell we made a canal in panama.
You put concrete over it you'll make the explosion bigger, not smaller. - and you'd add extra shrapnel. Only real way to deal with it is evacuate Sheerness, Southend, Canvey Island and some other areas, strap explosives to it and blow it and hope for the best. But nobody wants to do that so it'll probably sit there until it completey breaks up and/or blows. Build a huge concrete wall around it, pump a lot of the water out then blow it is probably the best (safest) option because most of the shock wave would go upwards; but it's still super risky, but you'd mitigate the tidal wave for sure.
That sounds great in theory, but containing an explosion actually makes it more powerful, ignite some black powder out in the open then try doing the same inside a pan.
The trouble is pumping sand on top of what is already an unstable wreck might cause it to collapse, producing enough shock to possibly detonate the explosives and cause a chain reaction, since there would be people nearby operating the dredging machinery you now have a much higher chance of injury or fatalities.
Got to get rid of her.
What is the cost of life
SEND THE BILL TO GERMANY!!!!!!
2015? 🤦♂️
See more photos and info on facebook group "SS Richard Montgomery (The wreck)"
What about a V shaped wall built between it and the shore as a wave deflector.
Put a bun over it did he say?
sheerness rules kurwa!
KABOOM!
I have a caravan there
thats bullshit :L you cant go between it and sheerness because a coastgaurd comes out and tells you off!
Heh, 2015...
If I was a diver,,I would not tuch it,,a few bombs could be ready go,,if one goes of,,that all go,,,bad see🤔😓
3 kilotons of explosives. That’s a “small” nuclear detonation.
okay tourist trade wrong and i live their wrong
How in the fuck do they make a giant ship like that in 50 days? I mean wartime efforts obviously work in overdrive... But those ships are gargantuan.
fly a plane into it?
Damn a us ship at the start eh we Americans are always noticed or something PLEASE DON'T READ THIS
Because it was an American ship that was sunk.
I was thinking "just blow it up" when the chap said - "if you're really daft you'd just blow it up". Ah just get her done lad.
MP Derek Wyatt’s constituency was Sheppey and Sittingbourne (not Southend). Southend is across the estuary in Essex whilst the boat lies in the county of Kent.
cause the blinkin ship fell apart, it was a liberty. when you launch one a day, they are probably going to fall apart
my old boss in the early 1980s was in the navy in WW2. He hated the Americans because of the advantage they took of Britain sending any tat they had as liberty ships when we were in dire straits. He also said they fell apart and were not very sea worthy. I assume this was before the Japanese bombed the Americans into WW2
Nothing like kicking the can down the road.....
came here after watching the tamil film vishwaroopam
I live in sherness and that’s why I’m moving when I turn 18 I’m not taking any chances
Bro if that explodes your screwed
When talking about the convoy SS Richard Montgomery was part of... of all the ships that they could have picked footage of, they picked only 1 of 2 battleships that weren't in commission by the end of WW2! Seriously? And of Vanguard and Jean Bart, Vanguard was the only unique ship without a twin that was in service, so they couldn't have made it any more obvious!
If they'd just stuck in footage of a Revenge, a Queen Elizabeth or a Nelson-class instead and it would have been fine.
Yet here we are all these year on since this video and it’s still there untouched lol. Talk about ignoring your problems.
I know people say it should be removed because of the shipping lanes and other stuff, but the operation would disrupt the lanes anyway. And the ship is still US property, so can they deal with it instead of us? Speaking of which...when was the last time this ship was checked by navy seals?
It was a US ship, but it's wrecked in British waters which makes it our responsibility, especially since it was mistakes from the Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander who was responsible for choosing a suitable location in the channel that caused the ship to be grounded.
This presentation is incorrect. The RM was owned by a private company that doesn't exist anymore.
@elcdaw And the average IQ of north Kent would go up about 50 points.
Can't even spell 'Sheppey' right!!!
@daveytn Thats true
I'm from England and I second your comment
It's 2018 now, 3 years after it HAD to be cleared. Still there!
FFM0594 2020 now n still there....😩
2023 now
By 2015 they’re full of shit
I’m doing a blog story on the Halifax Explosion of 1917, Lebanon waterfront Explosion 2020 and the SS Richard Montgomery that is an accident waiting to happen. And more than likely, it will suffer the same fate as the other two. Me, I would move! ... good video thank you.
If I was Prime Minister I would bring suit against Germany ( they started the bloody war after all ) and the United States Merchant Marine (they wrecked the bloody thing after all ). I would then force all lawyers involved in the lawsuit litigation into life boats and anchor them to the wreck. This would greatly hasten negotiations on both sides I believe.......
see SS Richard Montgomery (.) com The Richard Montgomery matter for more information and links about the wreck and the dangers it presents.
It’s 2020 and they still did jack shit about it thanks government
what actually dont make sense is that it hasnt exploded yet... i live in Sheerness
Put ya teath back in lol last couple of minutes!
Very interesting, thanks 🙏🏻
Would I be safe in grays if it goes up
Good video Mr Payne 👍
Wonder if you could sink caissons and build up around it to put it in the dry and then remove the stuff? Wonder how deep it is there and what would happen when the water was removed. It seems like nothing to be done but wait for the boom.
+Daehawk Can't do that because of the now unstable phosphorus shells. As soon as air got to them, chances there would a large, unwanted fireworks display.
Phosphorus ?!
2015 intresting
Nice
Why are we given 200 million to forien aid for countrys that have a space programe when we have issues effecting our shipping lanes . pilling around the site and make it a world heritage site ,would aliviate the danger and make it a tourist atration .and add a naturatal reff for the local ecoloigy.
@gaspode18 My IQ is 121 and im from the isle of sheppey and im 15.
If Sheerness got blown up, the applause could be heard 100 miles away..... :-)
Nicely done film and very informative, thanks
Very nice film, good story, well put together
