Hey everyone! There seems to be a lot of confusion about this video. This is for the original Gear VR released for the Note 4 at the end of 2014. Some of these don't apply to the S6 version of the Gear VR nor the consumer version of the Gear VR that was released at the end of 2015. Please like this comment so people will see this before thinking the information in the video is incorrect. Thanks! :)

+Kevin McArthur I see your point, but the majority of people don't know what "dev kit" means and they would still assume it's the latest version/only version they are aware of. Saying "original" suggests that it's an older version so anyone watching this who owns an S7 would likely assume that this isn't for their newly released device. I thought about titling it "Note 4 version" but based on a lot of questions I've received, most people think that the latest headset covers all galaxy devices back to the Note 4. I also thought about "old" version, but people could confuse that for the S6 version, not the Note 4 version. Seems like there's no good way to make it clear without uploading a new video. I'm open to suggestions though :)

Dude you rock and the video editing rocks! The stretch and squish effect was great. The Bluetooth controller bit was great to know I can use my Wii controller and, finally, the bit about being able to use the cardboard app with the gear VR headset with a magnet was great!
Protip on the cardboard apps. Pay $1 and install the Cardboard for GearVR app. It solves both problems. 1) launching cardboard while plugged into usb. 2) Using the touch pad on the gearvr to act as the magnet switch. I really like it.
Nice video, But the txt file for 3d videos is not necessary for 3DLR material, just create a subfolder called 3D in the my videos folder and put the 3D videos in that subfolder. It's also worth to mention that the Cardboard apps don't use the faster sensors of the Gear VR and not the optimized code with asynchronous timewarp and low persistence display, so the experience is not that good. Where did you find multiscreen formated video material?
Thanks for the tip with the 3D folder! And great point about the Cardboard app because you're right, the experience isn't nearly as good as the Oculus content. I'll be sure to mention those types of things in future videos. As far as multiscreen video goes, it'll take a lot of Google searching to find something because not many people have a triple screen setup in their homes so the market isn't quite there yet. I'd imagine that more multiscreen content will become available as virtual reality starts to pick up. Just like more 360 videos are already starting to be produced. If I find a great place to get multiscreen content from I'll be sure to post a link in the description.

Tips 5 through 3 either don't apply to me (my phone has no SD card) or are too esoteric, but tips 2, and especially 1, are great. I'm LOLing. I can't believe I didn't think to try that, just ignore the connector! So simple. Awesome. :-)

Techisode TV hey I was wondering if you had any luck with the gear Vr pairing with a Bluetooth controller ?? Because I am having trouble pairing my moga pocket with it but it does pair with my note4... And when I finally try to play a game on the gear VR it does nothing any ideas ??

I just ordered a Gear VR from Best Buy for $200 bucks. Just wish it was available in stores. I had to order it for delivery and its going to be about a week before it arrives. Cannot wait to start watching movies on it. Thanks for the great tips!
Hi Eric. I copied a half SBS 3D to the 3D folder with all the text files etc. you mentioned in the movie but when I play the movie there is no sound, do you know why. it is an MKV format.... don't know where to get the mp4 movies..... thanks for you help
+cefrio Tap once on the video while looking "forward", the starting direction. The pause/play, video tracking, etc should come up. Works in Oculus Video, Milk VR, and just about every other VR video app available in the Oculus Store
for 3D video - found that if you create a folder named "3D" in the "My Videos", and just drag + drop the video and .png (.png optional) into that folder, it recognizes it as 3D and will play perfectly fine! for what i have tried so far anyways.
in the last feature you don't have to put your phone under the usb port. you can download package disabler pro and cancle the oculus apps so when you plug in the phone it doesn't open the normal menu
Nice vid. Just one question: can the videos display subtitles? Im not english so eventhou i understand pretty well im kinda acustumed to subtitles. So...we just put the .srt file same as always?
That's a great question. I'm honestly not sure. I haven't tried it myself, but I would guess that you can't. Instead you'll have to export the video with the subtitles as part of the video file, not a separate file. Let me know if you get it working.
Great video. I hate to say it because it was full of almost literally every bit of info you would need to do this and I know that can be helpful for many people, but it was a pain to watch all the basic steps. I wish there was an abridged overview without all the tiny steps (like how to save a png).

Instead of using a magnet to make selections using Google Cardboard, you can stop the Gear VR Service before plugging into the headset. This works for both root and non-root users, for non-root, use Package Disabler Pro and disable the GEAR VR Service. Then plug in your Gear VR as normal and it won't auto-start the Oculus Home software, allowing you to utilize the selection button and charge port.
+Raul Miguel Yes it does, but no I will not help you find movies to download. If you do find some, I highly suggest putting your 3D movies directly in the Oculus/Movies/3D folder (create if not there), and view your movies in the Oculus Video app. Watching via the Oculus software vs Cardboard or just playing a pre-formatted 3D file will give you a better experience as the Oculus software is configured better for the Gear VR
+Raul Miguel you're welcome! No, unfortunately I haven't been successful getting the directional pad to work with swiping so far. Right now tapping works, and the back button on the Gear VR functions as the phones back button would. Different than "back" during Oculus mode, a lot of times it will leave the Cardboard app being used
Sorry for the super late response. I agree with your decision. It's basically just a portable DK2, with a bit less content. It's great for bringing to parties though. That's something you can't do with the DK2. Hope that helps!
Hi, have you had any problems with overheating? I've just bought mine and read about the overheating, one said it was due to Chromecast being open on the phone. Have you had any problems at all with extended use?

any idea of the ability to watch movies in Occulus cinema still works? I have some 3d movies on my PC I've been dieing to watch but have only been able to get it to play full screen on my phone, which is like trying to watch a movie with your nose to the TV screen.

Please help. If you want to add a thumbnail to a video you place in the Oculus 360Videos folder, it has to be a .pvr file. At least that's the kind of files that the Samsung existing videos have in there. Do you know an easy way to create a .pvr file from a jpg or png. The png does not work.
Too bad the current version of the headset doesn't accept the Note 4 without some alteration to the case. Works fine after that, but the late 2015 model really should have been made to take basically any phone type, including the Note 4. They sadly discarded the memory card as well.

+Daniel Strattonbury Actually even the Oculus rift, HTC vive, Sony all have the same issue so...you make your choice, but the Gear vr is much much much cheaper, then again of course, it's a beginner comparing to those big boys.
+TacocatBackwards I wouldnt recommend doing it. However there are lots of "service disable" apps you can get on the app store. You can disable the Gear VR service to stop it from auto loading when you clip in. Best part? Google cardboard is smart enough to use the touchpad on the Gear VR!
I'm not alone in this. I think I deleted some of the files necessary for the Oculus Cinema to work. Right now it is asking to insert the SD card that came with it. This is just flat out frustrating that Samsung or Oculus doesn't make it available online due to licensing blah blah blah. Anyways, do you have any insight on this? A possible next video?
instead of your number 1, you can get a package disabler and stop the gear vr service. then the oculus app won't start and you can use its touch pad and buttons
If I just purchase movies on Play shop will they be available on the VR or do I have to go and put them on the SD card that came with it. I'm not good with computers . Thanks
Francos Tacos Finally had a chance to test this out and it looks like you can't watch movies from Google Play Movies on the Gear VR. Hopefully that ability is added in a future update.
Just got my vr from Samsung on sale for $100.00, & love it... Except for the fact that there's no external (pass thru) charge port available. Thusly killing the battery, in a very short period of time.

The Feature no 1 is useless for phones S6, S7, S8 (without edge or +) as they are to small and you will simply loose them. I recommend turn of oculus application instead.
+Andre Cooper No, the Gear VR has no recording hardware to make this work. You can use your phone and an app like Cardboard Camera to shoot your own 360 Pictures to view with the Gear VR, but to shoot 360 video you will either need a special camera/tripod, or an attachment+app for your phone.
I have to use the, insert gear vr micro sd card into computer method. I successfully copied the contents that are on the gear vr sd to my computer in a folder. When I go to copy the data to the new micro sd it comes up with a message saying the disk is write-protected. Can someone please help, thank you.
Hmmm... The Gear VR micro sd card shouldn't be write protected. Did you put it in the sd card adapter and put that into your computer? If you used the adapter then look on the left side of the adapter. You should see a small downward arrow and some text that says "Lock". To the left of that is a little switch that can move up or down. Push that switch to the up position so that it does NOT line up with the word "Lock". If it still doesn't work take the SD adapter out and look at the switch. I've occasionally seen that switch get pushed to the lock position when putting it into a tight SD card slot so make sure that doesn't keep happening when you put the card in. If the switch keeps getting pushed back into the lock position you could use a little piece of tape to help keep the switch in position. If that's not your problem then I'm honestly not sure how to fix that issue without searching through Google. I hope that helped!
That's TSF Shell. It's pretty awesome, but also pretty expensive (over $10). If you are heavily in to customization then it's definitely worth it though.

my gear vr doesn't read data from my sd card. no mater how many times I try or what file route I use.. please help

TacocatBackwards I dont recommend doing this with your gearVR.. looks like 1 of two things could happen. You'd bend the usb or you'd drop your phone.
+TacocatBackwards I wouldnt recommend doing it. However there are lots of "service disable" apps you can get on the app store.
You can disable the Gear VR service to stop it from auto loading when you clip in.
Best part? Google cardboard is smart enough to use the touchpad on the Gear VR!
I'm not alone in this. I think I deleted some of the files necessary for the Oculus Cinema to work. Right now it is asking to insert the SD card that came with it. This is just flat out frustrating that Samsung or Oculus doesn't make it available online due to licensing blah blah blah. Anyways, do you have any insight on this? A possible next video?

How do you connect your MOGA PRO POWER to the gear vr?
you connect the Power Pro with the phone.
instead of your number 1, you can get a package disabler and stop the gear vr service. then the oculus app won't start and you can use its touch pad and buttons

Francos Tacos Finally had a chance to test this out and it looks like you can't watch movies from Google Play Movies on the Gear VR. Hopefully that ability is added in a future update.

Just got my vr from Samsung on sale for $100.00, & love it... Except for the fact that there's no external (pass thru) charge port available. Thusly killing the battery, in a very short period of time.

Scott Bowser yes it is only for charging. If you want to transfer data you have to remove the phone and plug it in.

The Feature no 1 is useless for phones S6, S7, S8 (without edge or +) as they are to small and you will simply loose them. I recommend turn of oculus application instead.

+Andre Cooper No, the Gear VR has no recording hardware to make this work. You can use your phone and an app like Cardboard Camera to shoot your own 360 Pictures to view with the Gear VR, but to shoot 360 video you will either need a special camera/tripod, or an attachment+app for your phone.

I have to use the, insert gear vr micro sd card into computer method. I successfully copied the contents that are on the gear vr sd to my computer in a folder. When I go to copy the data to the new micro sd it comes up with a message saying the disk is write-protected. Can someone please help, thank you.
Hmmm... The Gear VR micro sd card shouldn't be write protected. Did you put it in the sd card adapter and put that into your computer? If you used the adapter then look on the left side of the adapter. You should see a small downward arrow and some text that says "Lock". To the left of that is a little switch that can move up or down. Push that switch to the up position so that it does NOT line up with the word "Lock". If it still doesn't work take the SD adapter out and look at the switch. I've occasionally seen that switch get pushed to the lock position when putting it into a tight SD card slot so make sure that doesn't keep happening when you put the card in. If the switch keeps getting pushed back into the lock position you could use a little piece of tape to help keep the switch in position. If that's not your problem then I'm honestly not sure how to fix that issue without searching through Google. I hope that helped!

That's TSF Shell. It's pretty awesome, but also pretty expensive (over $10). If you are heavily in to customization then it's definitely worth it though.
