    I keep some of my high heel shoes just to remind myself that I don’t wear heels in case I have temptation to buy such shoes because they are so beautiful. I’m lucky to have space for that.

    7:20 girl. Yes. Not just an Asian thing. Tiny flam gam here, but I’ve always been more muscular than people perceive…instead of petite I kind of think of myself as “compact” because I still have way more muscle & booty than other women who look my size. 😂 it’s been a journey with that though. Love that you’re being a little more gentle with yourself.

      The "way more muscle & booty than other women who look my size" had me picturing Olympic gymnast Simone Biles! I love the word "compact" because it has the right connotation to it. Small but strong.

      Whenever I feel insecure about my body type (especially when seeing shows like Americas Next Top Model that glamorize that tall and willowy type) , I remind myself that Halle Berry is a Gamine and not a single guy I know would say she’s unattractive or masculine. She’s been named the most attractive woman on several lists.

    I REALLY related to a lot of the things you said. Especially regarding being 5’3”, Asian-American, and not really feeling petite. I have many clothes I realize I need to purge that I never reach for because they are slightly tight. I too would tell myself I just need to lose a couple pounds and those items would fit perfect. Inevitably as time went by I gained more weight instead of losing it. I’ve also purchased clothes in colors that I thought were beautiful, but not necessarily on me. Thanks for the very interesting and relatable video!!!

    I got rid of a skirt on a decluttering spree several years ago that I still regret (light grey knee-length circle skirt in a mid-weight matte silk). It made logical sense to donate the piece since I hadn't been able to fit into it for over a decade. What I didn't think of and now regret is that if I had kept the skirt, I could have someday paid someone to make a copy in a larger size. It's much easier to copy an existing garment than replicate an item from a description, especially if you are hoping to match the fabric. Something to consider if it's a piece you love.

      This is such a slippery slope. There's always an excuse. I just donated a bunch of clothes ai kept over the years bc I could use it for - insert whatever future plans I made for it here - and you know what? I never did and it was so freeing to declutter. Don't hold on to old energy.

  • @TheGillvanas

    I've been typing for 2 years now and I can easily say you are a flamboyant gamine. You are smallish with delicate ribcage, frame dominant on the shoulders, taut mid section, elongated and somewhat sharp on the face, and mostly soft and fleshy even at a lower body weight (citing back to the video you made about your kibbe type); basically contrasted body parts all over. You would need a much greater width ratio with a muscular tone throughout your body. However even tho you might have mistyped yourself, you actually pretty much wear accordingly to the FG so you definitely have the eye for your body. Gamine types vary within themselves more than any other type so 2 FG's probably wont look anything alike. Other than that you definitely have a laid back Natural/Classic as your dominant essences thats for sure! All the love! 💗

    • @stylerefinement
      @stylerefinement  3 місяці тому +12

      Wow you think so? It’s really that “small and delicate” part about Gamine that I can’t relate to as I’ve mentioned in the video - I feel severely out of place amongst actually petite (small boned) women!

    • @DanceOfDawn
      @DanceOfDawn 3 місяці тому +6

      i also think you are a flamboyant gamine because you don't look vertical enough to be a natural type. even though there a bunch of conflicting perspectives on that, i still think head-to-body-ratio is a really good giveaway of the verticality of a body.

    • @rebeccajordan4491
      @rebeccajordan4491 3 місяці тому +2

      I sort of concur. The Kibbe rabbit hole stresses me out because it becomes so contentious, especially for people who don’t fit easily into the categories that he has laid out. And I don’t understand why he only uses Dramatic Yang as a modifier when he has Natural Yang in his system. My own theory is that we need a Natural Classic and Natural Gamine type. I would put Jenn in one of those rather than FN or DC.

    • @TheGillvanas
      @TheGillvanas 3 місяці тому

      @@rebeccajordan4491 I agree! That's why there are many variations especially in Gamine. He barely tocuhes on the subject but as a community we keep on adding valid reasonable data! To keep it as is we say; there are 2 types of Yang being long/sharp (dramatic) and broad-blunt (natural), and 2 types of Yin petite/small (gamine) and curvy/lush (romantic). So Jenn would be a combination of opposites within her body: overall a fit stature with broad shoulders, taut hips, smallish vertical line, sharp facial features and a soft flesh that doesn't show what's underneath such as muscle, veins and bones. So she is a smaller a little softer and sharper version of a natural yes! Both approaches are true regardless what we call it as we see the lines as they are.

    Thanks for bringing a good balance of analysis / pragmatism to this topic. There's been too much thoughtless Marie Kondoing, and too much toxic minimalism. Yours is a reasonable approach. I also liked your comment on husbands/partners giving a good perspective due to a lack of overthinking 😂 I find it rings true

    It's so fortunate that I can sew. It's especially handy when you have clothes that are too long or short. You always have the option to tweak the proportions of the garment and often it's a quick alteration. That way I can often save a garment and I'm not spending any money on anything new.

    Girl, you are such a Natural! That shirt with the big cut out neckline looked so good on you. Open shoulders or necklines for the win! Have you tried dressing as the different Naturals and see what feels best? Great point about the loungewear- I recently thought this too and now you've given me the push to get rid of the ratty pieces. All I want to wear at home is my PrintFresh PJ's anyways- they're build for an FN.

    I do a similar semi-annual declutter and when I come across something that I’ve worn out, I spend a LOT of time with that piece breaking down why it worked so well. Like, I always have a couple of pairs of black pants but inevitably reach for one every time. This has led me to realize how much certain details-detail like the type of closure - matter to me. I don’t get rid of everything that goes out of style. Some things I hold back and see if they come back. I’m old enough to have seen wide-legged jeans come back for a third time. I have absolutely no doubt skinny jeans will come back as well. Right now my skinnies that are still in good shape are just stashed.
    I also think long and hard about things I purge then replace. I finally got rid of all my khaki/tan/beige last year. And what did I need this year? Khaki pants. They open up a huge space in my wardrobe and I don’t need to get rid of them just because khaki isn’t the best color for my complexion. I tolerate it fine on my bottom half.

    As always, really interesting inputs. I also have the tendency to over purge then regret, so I relate to that 😅 and yes, you're not alone in being a petite but not feel like one! I'm 5'3'' with a really long line from shoulders to knee but the rest of the limbs are quite shortish, and I have a small face too so I look and feel tall even if I'm not; I also gave up in finding my kibbe id for this reason 😂

  • @deannahassler8911
    @deannahassler8911 Місяць тому +1

    Yes, this is me too! since I'm 5'3" and appear "petite" I am not petite and I am always having everyone say, "but you are so tiny, you can wear anything!" I'm really not within my own proportions and its so hard to explain to people lol

  • @mcbrineart
    @mcbrineart 3 місяці тому +2

    You could try washing that green shirt in some laundry detergent for black clothing - it would make the colour less saturated (mute it) and cool plus darken the colour a bit. I think it would only work with natural fibres though. Might be enough to make it perfect for you if you like the piece other than the colour. I have a linen shirt I plan to do this with! I am hoping it is just enough of a tint to change the colour a bit, sort of like when you accidentally wash something that runs and you end up with blue items that are supposed to be white......

    I also work from home, and I've started just throwing on the same old clothes every day, without thought. It's actually quite depressing, because I just always look blah. And I remember telling my mum to stop doing that ... and here I am doing the same thing! And then about the Morton's Neuroma, I have them in both feet, one was cut out when I was 25 but came back again. For me the cause was wearing 'winklepickers' - I loved 50s clothes and wore these really pointy-toed high-heeled shoes for years. Love your channel, thank you!

    My complexion looks sallow and dirty in most shades of beige, but sometimes I'll hang on to a well-fitting beige tank top or camisole and wear it with a statement necklace in a color that looks great on me, like cotton-candy pink or pistachio green. Somehow, that pop of color just below my neck draws all the attention and it makes the beige seem "less close to my face," if you know what I mean. A bright scarf will do that too.

    Good video. I have short shins and only by taking photos have I realized that knee lengths skirts and dresses aren’t the best so I’m declutterring them. I believe I’m a petite soft natural and recently discovered that long bias cut skirts look better. If I were younger, I’d go shorter but that’s a no go at my age😊

    I actually do the same, I put so much stuff away and then next season I shop my old stuff and most of the time I circle between the stuff I already own and only get rid of stuff that I never put back into the rotation n. Especially when you are not really one of the seasons it’s so cool to have all these options in the cellar because in summer the colours I can wear are so different from my winter colours. (I have olive skin)
    I sometimes also put stuff up for sale on threadup to see if I would be bothered if someone would buy it :D

    Btw according to Kibbe Soft Natural’s body height typically moderate to slightly small, up to 5.7ft. And compared with gamine soft naturals look a little bit broader having the same height. I am soft natural with my 5.3 and I never looked petite in my life, and I never fitted in petite clothes, I just chose cropped length of standard size clothes. Thank you for the channel x Adore you!

    Great point regarding your/ our height. Context is so important. I’m also 5’3”, but I’m pretty much a straight line,and I look taller - unless I’m with my family, who are mostly tall.
    The annoying truth though is that most clothes are too long ☹️
    Re the dress which was the wrong length, I have kept some like that and pair them with tights of a similar colour plus layers for Autumn and Spring, but a) they have to be a structure and fabric which allow that; b) my climate (southern England) needs layers a lot of the year, so it’s logical for me.

    New subscriber here. I like this kind of video when you talk about more universal things like this. Especially loved the previous video about the rule of thirds. It's why I subscribed. I find talk of kibbe body types too confusing and feel like sometimes more than one fits. Even with you there is disagreement so how to know for sure? Because of this, I like it more when there is less talk of kibbe and more talk of universal things.

    I recently did a closet declutter, and got rid of everything that wasn’t in my color palette and that I hadn’t worn much. I don’t want clothing that I have misgivings about occupying valuable space in my closet. I don’t have much storage space in my small condo.
    I wear a lot of quality polyester items that really hold up well year after year and stay colorfast.

    Totally relate to all these methods, though I will admit I find it difficult to decide on a deadline when it comes to holding onto maybes. There's always that anxiety over releasing something that might be coming back into style or might fit well once you reach your personal body goals. I've held onto items for years and still regretted giving them away despite not wearing them once, so it's definitely a me being sentimental problem. Any thoughts on how long you should realistically hold onto a piece before finally giving up on it?

    • @stylerefinement
      @stylerefinement  3 місяці тому +1

      For me it's a couple of years tops. I've gotten rid of the anxiety around styles coming back once I realized that yes, they do come back, but they never come back the exact same way so most pieces I'm holding onto for the sake of them making a comeback still end up looking outdated!

    Thanks for sharing..very relatable 😊 the most common mistake I continue to make is buying items for my fantasy life...too glamorous items not practical for my lifestyle. I seem to have an obsession with blazers and evening dresses...I think maybe because I'm a dramatic or soft dramatic and these styles suit .e better than relaxed styles. However means i fall into the unfortunate category of wearing 20% of my wardrobe 80% of the time. Thank you for your honesty. helps normalise these mistakes and feel less guilty making the declutter less traumatic 😊

      Recently I've actually been feeling the importance of "honoring" my fantasy self. I think I've been leaning heavily into the practical aspect, and while I did achieve the goal of efficiency, after a few years I am feeling somewhat bored with my style (as I've mentioned near the end of the video!). I'm at a stage where I'm figuring out the "right" level of balance between fantasy and practicality that feels authentic to me 😊

      Agree, sounds like a perfect balance. We have a trip to Spain and France coming up, so I am deliberately challenging myself to wear my fantasy self wardrobe. Hoping to continue to incorporate more of these clothes by mixing more relaxed styling when I'm.back in Melbourne. Love ypur channel thanks for your insights and inspiration 💕
