The message you guys ended on really speaks to me. I'm what people sometimes call a mutt lol I've got three or four ethnicities that have lent to making me who I am. Irish and Native being the main ones. Kinda of leaves you feeling on the outside, like you don't really have deep roots in one place or another. Kinda feel like if someone asks you about your background you need a great big disclaimer to explain why your eyes are blue but you're attending meetings or whatever. I've never felt barred from celebrating my Irish ancestors but to mention Native heritage can sometimes earn you those "oh you just want to be interesting" looks. To ignore it feels too wrong also. Oh man!! The last part of this video hit home hella hard! I'm half Dutch, part Cajun and Alaskan native. ( Haida and Tlingit) my skin is white. It's been a struggle for me to find where I fit in culturally. People don't believe me that I'm native until they meet my mom, because her skin is darker than mine.ive even had other natives say that I'm not until they meet her. To them I was just a white girl who somehow knew cultural things. (Probably thought I was apropiating the culture) I have even had people asking me ""what are you?" , I personally think that's a rude way of asking someone's heritage. As soon as I say I'm Alaskan native I see it click in their eyes. I'm still struggling to find a balance of all of my heritage. Stay strong and proud out there😙 much love

I like the last one...Im mixed but I look white as hell so Natives don't really accept me and white people only do until they find out. My grandmother was full Native but adopted by white people (even though it was supposedly illegal in 1911) and they moved immediately after adopting her in OK to Texas. No idea what Tribe she was even from. They either didn't know or just chose not to say. My grandfather was mixed ( UKB and Scottish..not sure the percentage) and then their son (my dad) married my white mom (scottish and scandinavian ) But because they were both raised white, in white towns, we were all raised white too. I know more about my Scottish and Scandinavian side, down to the Scottish Clan. But my Native side? Nothing. , There was such a stigma surrounding adoption back then, and then add adopting a Native baby that it didn't get talked about. And the adoption was sketchy because it shouldn't have been allowed, pretty sure proper channels were not gone through.
Hello! I know, before the Child Welfare Act of '78 made it illegal to take Native children from Native families, the government often suggested to white families to take in Native babies to assimilate them into white culture. I'm a full blood from Oklahoma in Indian Territory so I know a lot of tribes here but if you can find out what region she was living in when she was adopted, that might be a start. Then you can look up the tribes around that area. Unfortunately, there are 39 federally recognized tribes in OK so it'll be difficult to locate a specific one.
