Love your comments, Lisa. We are kindred spirits. I'm 66 doing the same things and doing it with 2 blind adults (my children). Lots of work, everyday. I take breaks but don't eat as well as I should. You're an inspiration. I will eat better because I know I will feel better and have more energy when I do. Thanks for the reminder.

I just wish I had a husband or bf with the same mindset. The lockdowns took everything I had & now I’m home on a work injury going on almost 2 years. But been learning to can, dehydrate, save seeds, grow whatever I can in the limited space & finances I have, etc. Most of what I do I don’t have the right tools for, so it takes ten times longer to figure out ways to get stuff done. Plus my injuries have limited everything, so again, it takes ten times longer. But I refuse to give up. I do it all myself. If the right person comes along to join in the process, great, but if not, that’s fine too. My kids will at least have a ton of seeds. Lol

I can't tell you how many times I've had people tell me that I'm too old to be starting a homestead (63). Someone that I asked to help me move a travel trailer to a property turned around and talked to someone else about putting me in a senior citizen community living facility!!! 😮😳😤 I cannot tell you how put out that I was! I felt like it was an attempt to put me in a nursing home because that's where they were thought that I was supposed to be. It affected me so much until I really felt down in the dumps. So, I'm restrategizing and coming up with a different plan.
They don't get it! Nobody gets it! Everybody thinks that I'm crazy! I'm going to make it happen with or without them!!! 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

Hi! Chiming in again. I'm turning 66 today. I've been working on my raw land for 3 years. Yes, it's slow but I cut down trees, cleared our space built out 3 buildings and learned to make stairs and our porch. I'm a widow with 2 blind adult children both in their 30s. They help where they can but I do the brunt of the work. We are building out like you are lead. We each will have our own house when it's done on the land. Big learning curve, lots of work never-ending and so worth it. I may not have many years here, but like you said LF73, it's for them and their families. Age IS just a number.

It's easier for folks our age, because we did the work for the "Man" to have the ability to do what we're doing now. Unfortunately our children will not be able to achieve what we did. You're right about how we conditioned our children because we weren't cognizant of the system at the time. Now that we are old and nearly broken, aware of what's really needed, we're are a little late to the table.
I'm on my own now at 65 and have no family. Most of my church family older than me and don't seem to know what's coming.

Hej from the north of Sweden. We get just three summer months to grow anything here, and this past year we had so little sun, too much grey and rain, so no harvests. Despite that I keep going. And I'm a sixty two year old woman who is three quarters blind. I have a small flock of chickens, just one quarter of an acre that I put raised beds on (forest soil here is acidic soil) and right now, we're under two foot of snow with sub zero (Celsius) temperatures. I have an adult daughter. I do this for her. I've been doing this in various places all my life, from a smallholding (homestead) on a tiny Orcadian island to a croft in the Scottish Highlands and now, here in north Sweden, on the edge of a tiny village with just that quarter acre. Here's one piece of advice I'd like to share with other older homesteaders...I made the mistake of believing that, since I'm older and age related issues kick in, I needed to downsize. Hence the decline from a few acres to just one quarter. And I can tell you now, I regret that. I can't any longer keep my beautiful goats, sheep, pigs etc. Only the chickens. Downsizing made neighbours too close and personal space too scarce. Even if you feel you can no longer keep the same livestock, hold onto the land. Rent it for grazing/livestock if you have to, but above all, hold onto it. My daugher has seen the highs and lows of smallholding. Livestock sicken and die, and you must deal with death regularly. And if you eat meat, it behoves you to learn your own self how to humanely end that creature's life with as little suffering as possible, and how to process your own meat. She learned that summers don't always happen, that harvests can vanish in a few weeks of steady heavy rains. But she also learned that food grown by one's own self is the best for you. That meat raised by yourself is happier, healthier than any store bought cut. And that the powers that be do not want any of us to be self reliant and independent. So she learned, do it anyway.
I'm doing it for her. My time here is almost up, I know it. We are always simply caretakers of our land for our future generations.

Dam Lead Farmer you hit the hammer on the head when you said we have been doing it all wrong. I have been saying this for years. Because this system is based on debt without it this country would not function. Whether you buy a house, car, credit cards, borrowing money, student loans etc. Its all based on debt. The bible does say do not be a slave to the lender. There is a reason why he said that. Because you will be forever working for the man. Great video and I love your land. Its beautiful.

Love your message. Wish I could turn back the clock, but reality & God tell me I'm here for a reason. I've worked since I was 14. As a divorced Mother of 3, I worked 2 & 3 jobs so I wouldn't need handouts (no help from the ex ever). I taught my kids that effort gives results, not laziness. Remarried years later, a wonderful man, we have a home and acreage. We grow vegetables, fruits, raise chickens, spoil our 5 dogs. At 64, my body is beat up but still going. We both have adult kids, they have kids. It's our grandbabies who will likely embrace our lifestyle. My married Army grandson, my soon to be married adult son and (possibly) my youngest daughter, are the only ones who've embraced our lifestyle. I'd love for future generations to have this start. Both of us are veterans, raised to work hard and serve. I don't regret it. That ethic came from working and struggling. Without it, I wouldn't appreciate where we are now. If we can take some pressure off our young so they can follow their hearts, choose what they want to do instead of constant compromise, it would be a blessing.

Hey Lead and family. I just turned 54 last month. Until God says otherwise, do everything you dream of doing that’s in your heart that you can. A person is as old as they feel and want to be. I am blessed to say that I had a bit of a different up bringing. My siblings and I were taught to build your own and not work for anyone. I’m proud to say I passed that on to both of my sons. I have my own business and they both have their own businesses. Mistake I made was coming back to the city.

Hubby is 77 and I'm 68, both disabled, but still have work to do. It would be nice to pass the baton down to the next generation, but they are too busy with their own families. We just have to put our noses to the grindstone or else we will be done. Not gonna happen! Pain or not, get out there and do what you really want to do, or it's over!

By the way, we've both had lumbar surgery, plus I've had neck spine surgery. We still must spend 2-4 hours per day taking care of our home and land plus 3 rentals. Today we're working on a rotted out French dort threshold because there is no one else to do it. We still live paycheck to paycheck just like most everyone else. Just hang in there and get it done regardless!

@leadfarmer73 yes...I recalibrated life plans doing covid. Covid was a blessing in so many ways. Lot of quite time to learn you going it wrong. Must get out of the American mindset to success. I Got rid of everything and everyone I don't need to be Free. Literally....

My cousin always thought we were doing it wrong too. I have to agree. He said the elderly want to work and be useful; whereas the young adults still want to play. He said we should have some kind of account that we wrack up while we’re enjoying our life and spend the rest of our lives, when we’re olde by working the debt off. He said work shouldn’t start before 40 or 45.

What about having Health Insurance ? That was my biggest fear. Didn't want to be sick and without Insurance. So I continued to work for him.
Any suggestions on covering that issue ?
    Thanks LF73

Buy your own health insurance. That’s what I did and just so happens it’s cheaper than getting it through a third-party.

I wish we as a community would resort back to the barter system where we trade our goods, skills and services with our family, friends and neighbors.and they equally share their goods, skills and services. That can be an ultimate win win for everyone involved, or for instance I have three sons. How about each one master a skill/ talent, goods or services . It’s a win win for all involved.
