5.0 LX notchback, no bodykit. The perfect fox Mustang to me. Just a badge and pair of polished pipes out back to tell you what’s up. That’s grown up muscle, and the proportions are so tidy.

Always good to see our friend Steve... going through some tough health problems myself, and seeing you getting on with your life, even with your health problems really motivates me, thank you.

glad to see you steve! I myself have an 87' Mustang fast back LX 5.0 5 speed cabaret Red with Red interior 45,509 on the ODO. Mine was ordered from the factory with ZERO OPTIONS!!! No exterior badges, no AC, basic radio no tape player. It was built to race. I'm the second owner and the first started building it for Norwalk and never finished it. i got it in 2007 with 15,388 miles on it with the factory blue window sticker still on it. She may not be stock, but she's low miles and a lot of fun!
Throwback. I actually got a speeding ticket in 1992 on the Mass Pike in Auburn by a state trooper driving an unmarked Mustang 5.0 LX coupe. We were both hauling ass and i remember it being the most expensive ticket I've ever gotten.
Way to go Steve! Nice video. I have a 31,000 mile 1990 7UP with the AOD. It is ONE of 4,127 ever built. These only came one way, loaded with everything. Just had mine professionally appraised at 40K so, that should tell you something about your asking price on a common notchback.
My brother and I had four Fox body Mustangs/Capris between '79 and '91. The 302 was a breath of fresh air from the slugs we had been putting up with during that era.
I had a Calypso green 92 notchback with a 5spd, longtube headers & Flowmasters and 3.73's That car sounded better than anything and it was pretty quick. I'm a Pontiac guy, but i was workin at a bodyshop that rebuilt these cars all the time so i got to liking them.
Love my little notchback, 86 LX that is all 88 GT underneath with heads cam intake...5 speed....back in the day, me 88LX hatch swallowed engines, transmissions, rear ends and....groceries....quad shocks appeared in 1985 and carried on from there until the end of the run. The slapper bars ended (mercifully) in 1984.
That car is a cream puff! I daily drive my 91’ Mustang Lx 2.3 5 speed car although I swapped in a 2.3 turbo from my old 86’ Thunderbird Turbocoupe about 15 years ago. Been a reliable and economical car all these years. Just recently I pulled the 2.3 turbo out to reseal the entire engine since it was starting to leak with its original 200k mile gaskets/seals, added a higher flow exhaust manifold and a slightly larger hot side along with a new T3 turbo and repainted the engine Ford grey as original. I’ve put a few thousand miles on it since the minor refresh of the 2.3t and it runs a little better than before and doesn’t require premium like it did before,, probably due to cleaning the carbon out and replacing the main/rod bearings and lapping the valves’ new springs, etc. In the winter I’ll put around 300lbs of sand bags in the hatch area over and behind the axle and it goes almost anywhere, also thanks to a lighter engine up front.
I ordered an 89 LX hatchback, AC/electrical package was an add on, rear defrost. I got 3:08 gears instead of 2:73. This was in CT, I still have it. Hi Steve!!
Bought a ‘93 GT right off the showroom floor. Solid car, zero problems, criminally understated horsepower rating. The 5-speed was essential in this car.
To this very day, no stock sports car has ever had such slick looking exhaust tail pipes like the Mustang of this generation. I loved that Ford didn't try to hide the chrome!
Welcome back, Steve. We love you! I had a '92 Summer Edition (red over white with white wheels) convertible. Bought it with low miles and it didn't really need any maintenance. It was an automatic and with the measly rear axle ratio, I had a custom five speed installed and it became a whole different car. Took it on the Power Tour and it performed great, although the convertible top wasn't particularly quiet at speed. Thanks for showing this.
Also, the 5.0L notchback was also used by many police agencies across the country as pursuit vehicles. Called the SSV(Special Service Vehicles) package, they came with a 160 mph speedometer, a heavy-duty cooling system, and a high output alternator to handle police use. A clean SSV package Mustang is worth good money now.
Good Seeing You Back At It Steve, Yes I Remember Those, Tricky Car To Handle (In The Wrong Hands Of An Inexperienced Teenager’s Hands) With That Light Rear End, Power Respected, Was A Cool Car.. The Highway Patrol Used Them, Running Just About Anything Down Back Then..
Nice, I had a 1991 just like that but in bright silver with red & black interior, power windows. Took mine up to 120 mph once. I liked the cool simple wheels and the notchback sleeper look.
The GT was available in both convertible and hatchback, not just hatchback. There were a bunch of GT convertibles made back in the day. Only the notchback wasn't available in GT trim. Minor correction on your facts: the pony wheels appeared on all five liter V8 cars for the 1991 model year, not 1990. These replaced the finned wheels on the GT and the ten hole wheels on the LX 5.0 cars. The ten hole wheels then became a factory option on the LX four cylinder cars. Thanks for posting the video!
Sold, a few years ago, an '86 LX, notchback, 5.0. It had every factory option and the 5-speed. Vinyl seats were the optional interior, gray with light gray piping. If you wanted a lighter 5.0 coupe, the LX was the way to go. I'm pretty sure it was an LX notch that Revan Evan used to set those crazy low 1/4 mi times back in the early days.
