Pretty slick..I've made a ton of smaller planters with a very similar design. I find it a lot easier to assemble the panels first with a spot of glue on the edges, clamp them down then trim them to fit for the corners. No problem with expansion even here in South Carolina..
By the way, cypress is a great wood for planters as well. Cypress is pretty much bullet proof when it comes to both moisture and even contact with wet soil. The stuff takes forever and a day to even begin to rot..
Just wanted to say well done, nice to see someone build something like this that's held together with more than brad nails and glue heh
Also, did you consider using a single 4x4 for the corners instead?
How much do you think the wood cost for this? What are the rough dimensions?

Nice planter. One question, why didn't you make one lengths for the shelf supports at 7:22 and 8:18?

Vincent Simmons it was just because that was the length of the scraps I had on hand. Since it was never going to be visible I just used what I had in the scrap bin.

This is beautiful. Still 3 months until the snow is gone, but I need to have planters ready to go by then! Are the plans available soon?
Honestly I have been a slacker but I do plan to (pun intended) to make build plans for this planter box. Unfortunately, I am not 100% sure when I will be able to carve out time to make them in the next couple of months as I my calendar is pretty full at the moment.
Just an FYI, I am also looking into finding someone who can possible create plans for me so I can continue to focus on building actual projects and can release both videos and plans at the same time.

Beautiful piece. Would be quite simple if you have a shaper, planer, router table etc. to work with. Still very nice.
are the plans available? I dont see them on your website. Also I currently only have access to a circular saw. can this project still be done easy enough?
I do not have the plans on my website. I started to design them and simply got busy with other projects and work. One day I do hope to finish them.... I just dont know when that will be. I think if you could do most of this project with a circular saw if you simplified a few of the steps. One thing I would suggest is rather than cutting a dado in all the rails to simply attach the panels to the back of the rails.

I don't know if I'll get a response this late, but just a few pocket screws are sufficient for the weight of the dirt?

Like others have already commented, this is an excellent design and your carpentry skills and techniques make for a well executed piece. I have shown this design to my better half and she has requested that I build her one. So, I have gone over your UA-cam video numerous times to develop my own set of drawings. Before I go down to buy the lumber I have a couple of questions, if you can spare the time to answer.
1. What dimension is the top trim piece? It looks like 1 x 4, or is it 1 x 3? Whatever it is, it certainly puts a nice finishing touch on the planter. I'm just finalizing my plans and knowing this dimension would be helpful.
2. Did you find the bottom fence boards strong enough to support the weight of the soil. I know you used a treated wood framework to support the fence boards, but I still have some concerns. When I have built planter liners before, I always used cedar 2 X 4 for the bottom. Expensive overkill maybe?
3. I have a planer, but not a joiner. I assume use were using the joiner to square up the cedar stock and take any twist out. Would using just the planer be enough?

Bryan Lee seriously the best part of posting these videos is learning when others find it useful in some way.
Here are the answers to your questions.
1. The top trim is 1x4
2. So far the bottom has been perfect but I next time would probably beef it up slightly and use 5/4 deck boards.
3. I used my planer simply to take off the rounded corners so I could make the joints between the stiles and rails flush. Totally Not necessary.

Foley Woodworking Thanks for you reply. I have completed the build. I went with 1x3 for the top trim and 5/4 deck boards supported by 5 2x4 cross beams laid on their side for support. I also use my planer to dress the trim. Next step is to apply 3 coats of Cetol to protect the cedar and enhance the look. I have also elected to use pond liner ( with drainage).
One problem that I had was that fence board cedar was wetter than I thought and I now have cracks between the boards that were tight joints two days ago! I guess I should have waited a few days to let the fence board dry out. Oh well, it still looks good.
I will forward a photo of my version of your planter as soon as I have completed the Cetol.

Do you put a plastic liner in it and fill with dirt?
I put filter fabric in it so the water could still drain through the dirt.

I'm curious. I make cedar and other types of planters all day for sale and there's a considerable amount of work and money that goes into each one. If you had to add up all the man hours and material cost how much would you have to charge for such a planter? I build mine less than half the size with a LOT fewer steps involved and still barely break even on the price and have to take into account wear and tear on myself and my equipment.

I see you don't have the plans up yet - could you provide the details and count of the lumber used? From what I see, to my untrained eye, 2x4s and 1x6s are all you've used, correct?
Brilliant design, btw. Of all the videos on youtube on planter boxes, I liked yours the best.
1x4 for the trim as well. I did just see your comments with another gentleman from about a year ago.
I went ahead and drew this up in SketchUp and have my cutlist all figured out. With lumber prices being what they are, I am considering making the bed shallower than your design to save some money. One question - did you use plastic or fabric liner at the base and sides of the bed? If so, did you end up drilling holes in the base fence boards to allow for water to flow through?
@@smattt I did use a fabric liner at first but changed to a plastic liner after the first year to keep the wood a bit more dry.
@@Foleywoodworking I realized too late that I incorrectly identified the 2x6 boards as 2x4s but I'm going with it anyway as it doesn't look too bad. I've got all my pieces cut, now just have to router out the dado for the rails and then put everything together.
Did you apply any finish at the end? What would you recommend?
@@smattt Eventually I did apply a coat of thompsons water seal which has done a pretty good job at keeping the orange tones of the Cedar.

I should have taken wood shop in high school rather than choir. I thought I'd meet chicks in choir....but I coulda been making cedar planter boxes instead.
DIY i see but first i have to buy 100k equipment to be able to make planter box and save couple$$ yeah this is brilliant
Lol! The tools I’ve acquired over the years definitely make easier but think most of this could be built with a Circular saw, palm router, drill and of course a Krey jig.

I mostly publish videos to show how I made something and how simplest it was. Ultimately I just hope that it sparks and idea or gives someone the confidence they need to tackle a similar project.
You can slow down the video to a quarter of the original speed. I'm almost done building this planter after watching this fabulous video and drawing up my own plans in SketchUp. Just have the supports, deck boards and trim to go.
