Hi. I'm researching my Grandad who worked there 1942- 1964 as an electical fitter/ Foreman. (RAE from 1937). I was thrilled to watch this video. Thanks so much. I feel much more connected to my Grandad!
I used to work there back in the 1980’s. I worked for Rolls Royce military engine group in Bristol and we used to test engines there, primarily the RB199 from the Tornado fighter. They had an altitude cell that could test an engine at a simulated Mach 2 at 30,000 ft. It consumed so much power to provide the airflow velocity into the engine and pull a low pressure behind the engine that they had to coordinate with multiple local power stations before firing up tha facility. It breaks my heart to see it abandoned, it was the cutting edge of technology when I was there.
If you had only seen the air house, cell 3 and the incredible cell 4. When i found the underground tunnel between cells 3 and 4 is blew my mind. This place was my playground back in 2007, i really miss it.
Worked at the NGTE for 4 years as a youngster. Fascinating place to visit I believe it was called the Anechoic Building. There wasn't any echo back then, any sound would be dulled by the padded walls. Eerie place.. you could hear a whisper from 20 ft away. Microphones everywhere.
Hi I used to work in this facility 25 years ago. It was known as the Noise Test Facility hence the acoustic chamber. I remember using the scissor lift!
This is PYESTOCK and always will be PYESTOCK. Despite the fact that property developers have bought the site and are building houses on it, and have renamed the area Hartland Place, why this name has bugger all relevance! If it wasn't for the secret war work carried out here, these bloody property developers wouldn't exist. They should have far more respect for this land! When this site was fully operational I could hear the roar of the engines from my home (.5 mile away), let alone see the vast columns of cooling steam being thrown out of the cooling vents.
I know this place, I live locally and it was linked to the RAE in Farnborough. I have friends who worked there and there is still a facility there. Recently subscribed and enjoying the videos
I would love to have seen the site before the demolition took place. But a very interesting explore never the less. Those cone shaped metal items that were light were probably titanium, & cost a few bob, then & now. Keep up the good work.
Great explore 👍 Very interesting location, must have been something to have been there during the testing process of the many types of jet engines. Cheers 👍✌
I work for one of the other big jet engine manufacturer, based on my user name it’s not hard to figure out which one😎. Our engines are composed of one of 4 alloys. Tit, stainless, INCO, or carbon. It’s not carbon, imagine it’s not Ti, 99% it’s either an INCO alloy or SS(most test tooling is SS). FYI, they abandon these locals in situ because they remain “grandfathered”environmentally if they need to increase test capacity. Cheers
I thought this place was all gone? Explored it at least 5 times back in 2007 and it was an epic experience. Only one building left on Google Earth and it looks like it's being used for car storage. Supposed to have been a huge distribution hub going there and I actually thought it was in the process of that as I moved away late 07. Had I known, I would have been back as my family are still nearby. Will watch the video!
From memory, the building you have been in was still in partial use back then and the road lead to Vector Aerospace which is/was operational so was well used and we kept away. Handful of photos from one of my last visits in June 07 here: www.28dayslater.co.uk/threads/pyestock-visit-10-06-07.15218/
So the area you are in at the end of the video is where the air would have been fed to that building through the enormous blue pipes that used to criss-cross the site. In my photos above is the air house which was full of enormous generators that blew air through those pipes at the speeds needed to test the engines. The crane would have lifted the engines into place in the huge room and the bit you had the dodgy drop from was to take the exhaust away in the other direction. These buildings are called cells.
and just found this footage of one of the other (and probably the most impressive) cells there. This was used for filming in the movie Sahara (along with another cell) and in an episode of Red Dwarf. Sahara worth watching to see some of it.
That building is so interesting and on an enormous scale. Must’ve been great place to be involved in when they were testing the jet engines. Are there any people around who used to work there I wonder.
When I was a kid in the 1970 saw the testing Concorde without its engine baffles to make them quiet. They very loud as u heard it coming before u saw the plane
I used to work with a coupe of ex-Pystock employees in the '80s, both of them had regrettably ended up with the Pystock Shuffle during their period working there.
So, I wonder if the engine was actually inside that sound dead hall and the exhaust went out through the big tunnel you came in through, rather than the other way around. Makes more sense to me to break the soundwaves in the test chamber to actually be able to measure the sounds it emits without interference from reverberations - the noise gets out with the exhaust anyway, so it doesnt matter how loud it is outside. You would also need a crane to handle the engine, which was there. That would likely make the other, higher situated but smaller pipe the intake. We got quite a few commenters stating they worked there or in similar facilities, but I couldnt read any insight into the workings of the chamber, which is too bad...
Mate the reason that building is still standing is a specialist contractor has to come in as I'm fairly certain the main room you were in with the baffles where you climbed down may contain asbestos.⚠️⚠️ Might be an idea when you next do a search in a big unit to carry masks.. Other than that enjoyed the video 😂👍
Hi m8 you should come to Plymouth our old cinema has been shut down the last 2 years it was abc cinema and gala bingo underneath what's shut down I used to work there.
You should have said how tall Lee is when you got him to stand next to the large round thing so we could estimate better. Though I would guess he’s at least 6’ tall and not like 5’7”.
Here I Australia mining companies have to restore the ground they mine in. Places like this should have to restore the land they are no loner using. I wonder if the buildings could be re used. I expect a lot of money would have to go into the build to change it.
They leave them in place because as long as some of the original concrete is in place, they get around the red tape of modern jet test facilities. We use the word “DeActivated”.
Love your videos and channel but this place has been done so many times with iks hell on earth the secret vault etc. Its like your all chasing each other around.
the place is really something else, before my life fell to pieces I had air force pilot grade math, is sad to see them gone to waste but no doubt for reasons of spy security and outdated also probably, I'd have been able to give a better odd bit of descript here there but since my brain injury is worse all my intellect and knowledge is cramped up comes out in bits mixed with conspiracy crap, totally aggravating

I have lived locally all my life and had relatives who worked there, very interesting, thanks.
I explored this place over 10 years ago! Didn’t realise any of it was still there!
So amazing. Congrats from Brazil!
JUST A MASSIVE FIND, THANKS TO SHARE, MY FRIEND. TAKE CARE😀🌜🌞🌞🌻🌞🌞🌛
Different content, but what an interesting building, and what (official) secrets must have gone on there. Fascinating. Well done.

Alot of people don't find the underground part of the site, it takes alot of light to fill that room even when taking photos on a long shutter..

greetings from england norfolk cool work
One of your best ones mate very interesting to see. Keep up the great videos
The room with the big tube I think is called an Anechoic chamber.

Thank you for your video. Very interesting place to explore. Have a great day.
Bearded is the best at this
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing. I would have loved to work at a place like that. You guys rock! ✌😎 Stay safe!
How huge was that place?? I love these videos that are connected to military history. I hope you get to explore more places like this. Amazing 😉

Nice. Shame its demolished, was a pretty cool place.

Has this place been knocked down or is it still open to exploration?

Inconel is a exhaust material, which might have been used on the engine parts you filmed towards the beginning of your video, nice vid btw 👍🏼
Great video 👍🏻
great video 👍👍
Nice one m8y 😎
😃🍻👍🏻
You took a long time to go to that place it's been unused for at least 6 years that I know of

thought they demolished it in september last year?
It might be very loud when they were testing the engineers/ I just started watching your show I really like it
Hell on Earth came here or somewhere very similar. Looks amazing mate.
I would love to go explore the places y'all go

Great place for a rave !!!
What a place
3:06 Someone's Tinder date ruined, oh well there's always Bestival
😂😂
was waiting for the screaming zombies to come pouring in !
The way you said how light the thing was that you picked up, it seems like aircraft grade aluminium.
This site looks like something you would see in the Fallout games.
Haha ......

Roger Greenwood 6’ 🙈🙂
The Bearded Explorer So he’s a big lad then, you did say 17 -18 stone later in the video, so more like 6’4” at a guess.
Is this still accessible?
I'd be wearing a respirator if in there. Place is probably full of crocidolite dust.
This place has been demolished now I think?
