I think what’s important is that introducing a song for social change, with this extent of attention, will set a precedence for future productions with this goal in mind. Music industry has been staying away from making political statements, claiming music or art should be beyond politically motivated fractions and be marketed as a universal expression. When Billie Holiday sang the Strange Fruit n 1930s protesting lynchings in the South, she was given a hard time by the Big Boys. Strange Fruit is known as the Anthem for 1960s civil rights movement. But it was only in late 70s that it got acknowledged by the Grammys. Apparently this category of Grammy Awards is a new one. So Shervin’s win can be followed by other musicians who will bring about awareness of human rights violations across the globe.
Also, the lyrics may be more captivating if one is an Iranian listening to it. There’s a cultural platform for lyrics in any music.
