My Biggest Vinyl Record Buying Mistakes And My Number One Grail!

- In this video I discuss the biggest mistakes I have made when buying Vinyl Records. I show records from Captain Beefheart, Donna Summer, David Bowie, The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Cranberries, Rhianna, Sting, and Van Halen
Great tips. My biggest mistake is buying the same album three times because I don't have them cataloged. Lol
teresa Taylor bad memory
@@kostashocuspocus6576 yep. Went a little crazy when I first got back into vinyl. So.much.
Thank you Melinda. I recently started to purchase vinyl purely for nostalgic reasons. You made the most profound statement when you said "buy what you love." That's exactly what I've been doing.
Good for you. Vinyl collecting is fun, especially when you run into albums that take you back in time. Have a great weekend!
Thank you melinda! As a young vinyl collector, these tips really do help. Much appreciated :)
I am thrilled at the thought that someone else can learn from my mistakes. Thank you so much. This is wonderful!
Congrats on the VH! I also need this record to complete the VH collection. I picked this up and put it down four times over a two year period at my local record store (Forever Young Records). It was 39.99 new when it came out and I just didn’t want to spend the money! Finally one day I went back in early 2104 to buy it and it was gone and is now worth over 100 bucks! Live and learn!
Yep! My story too. I waited too long to buy my copy as well. I hope you find a great copy and don't have to spend the big bucks on it. Thank you and take care!
My biggest mistake is accidentally buying shit that I already own
I haven't done that yet but I can certainly understand how easy that would be. Thanks for sharing.
I can see that happening to me, I have an awful memory. So I keep a list on my phone, since I just started collecting keeping notes has been easy.
Been there, still doing it! :(
She called "frownland" a song LOL Tourist collector right here. I must say $18 is a steal for that particular pressing. Fun video thanks for sharing.
What's wrong with that? It's true that Captain Beefheart may not be everyone's cup of tea, like Ms. Murphy said, but he's got MAJOR props from musicians from almost every genre you can think of. He worked closely with Frank Zappa a great number of times. A whole lot of people call "Trout Mask Replica" *pure genius*and while I'm certainly not always in the mood to listen to it, I would have to agree.
This was actually really helpful Melinda! I've never really thought to check for warping that's not super noticable or even paying attention making sure I always have the correct LP in the sleeve. Eyes opened! Thank you! I'm sorry you had to go through the mistakes though.
Thank you so much Amber! I am so happy to think that my mistakes may help others avoid them. I really appreciate you saying that! Take care!
I'm just getting into vinyl. And wow is it an intimidating - I had no idea I would actually need to learn stuff. :) I love your channel and this video is very helpful. Thanks!
Lol. Don't be intimidated. This is a very fun hobby. You just need to look closely at a few things. If you do make a mistake, you are not alone. Thank you so much!
Theres no right or wrong in what your taste in music is. I will say sometimes albums will grow on you. I bought TMR in 1970 and couldnt get through side one. Years later( in the mid 80's) i listened again and loved it! In the 17 year interim i listened to Howlin Wolf, Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, John Coltrane, etc. A lot of CB's influences were unknown to me in 1970. It took some time to sink in.
Yeah the Captain. One of the original roots rockers.
This happened to me with Never Mind the Bullocks..., once you hone your ear to listen past the noise you hear the rough chord structure and musical sound. This never happened with TMR.
I am an avid vinyl collector myself been collecting for nearly 40 years have well over 2000 albums, my big takeaway from this seems to be know what you are looking for know your record labels..PS. the Captain Beefheart is a good find the album is definitely not for the Casual listener but a true gem.
I'm sure with 40 years experience you have the knowledge to avoid all these mistakes. Hopefully, I will be where you are at some point. I have no regrets about buying Captain Beefheart. It has been very entertaining.
@@MelindaMurphy well thank you for the reply I know I've made all of these same mistakes myself pick up things I thought was an original release that ended up being a reissue or a bootleg, and like you with the Van Halen LP let things go that I said oh I'll pick it up later and then it ended up going out of print LOL no avoiding some of these mistakes.
Hi Melinda, thanks so much for your video. I usually check a record only for any deep scratches but you've given me a few more things to look out for before buying. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for the kind words. Hopefully myi mstakes will make others aware. Have a great day!
As a newbie to vinyl, even though I was born in '82, my journey in music was cassette to CD to streaming and an emptiness laid dormant for a long time.
Wanting to start listening and collecting vinyl, I am finding your videos super satisfying and informative!
Thanks for sharing your love with us, it is really meaningful for a greenhorn like me 🙂👍
Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate it.🤗♥️
Here's a tip for everybody that collects records. Know your record labels both first pressings and reissues before you start buying. I can't tell you how many times online or in stores that I've seen a seller trying to pass off a reissue as a first pressing while charging a premium price. They will state it's a first pressing when it's a late 70's or an 80's reissue instead. A lot of people don't know that and end up getting ripped off by paying more money for a less valuable record. Some will be sneaky and try to put a reissue in a first pressing jacket to fool the customer into paying more. There are a lot of crooks out there trying to rip people off since vinyl has made a big comeback. So, know what the labels and jackets look like before you make your purchases so you don't end up wasting your money.
Excellent advice! It always pays to do your research. Thank you!
Sir, Thanks for the advice.
I made a 60 dollar mistake and bought a crosley cruiser
Funny!😄
Trout Mask is a great album. I had to listen to it several times and did a bunch of research about the album and how it came about and recorded. After learning the history and myths about the process, it became more and more amazing. Now one of my favorites and takes me away in moments. Cool vid.
Thank you so much. Sometimes it takes a few listens to love a record. The reward is worth the effort!
Hi Melinda !
I get so happy when other collectors completes their collection of favourite bands or find a special record grail. In this case , you did both in one. I am truly happy for you. Congratulations ! I can totally relate to it myself. Billy Idol’s Cyberpunk and the reissue of Pink Floyd’s Pulse were two of my biggest grails that si have bought the last 18 months. Take care now and have a great weekend.
I love Pink Floyd's Pulse. I picked that one up too. It is cool to get my #1 Grail and finish off my VH collection. I am a happy girl! Have a great weekend!
Beefheart can never be a mistake! It’s the only album I’m scared my wife might walk in on me listening to!
Haha! I understand. 😄😄😄
The Best of the Doors album is a reissue The all red Elektrs was started in the 80s
I wouldn't have minded a reissue of the right record in the right cover. I should have been paying more attention to the title. Have a great week.
Melinda, this was a fantastic video with a lot of great advice! Especially buying something you're not going to listen to. I've fallen into that "gotta have it" trap many times only to realize that I'm never going to listen to it. Congrats on your grail! Enjoy it! Have a great upcoming weekend!
Thank you Bill. I do think that buying records I rarely play is probably the biggest mistake I have made. I no longer bargain shop unless I am sure I will love it. Have a great weekend too Bill!
Excellent! People don't talk too much about their mistakes. This was an eye opener. I sometimes don't take the time to check/scrutinise the records I'm buying. I will from now on. Thanks for posting!
Thank you. I'm glad I could help and hopefully you got a good laugh at some of my mistakes as well. Take care!😄
@@MelindaMurphy As a record enthusiast myself, I like to call them 'hiccups' instead of mistakes. Lol!
Hi Melinda, as it turns out, that counterfeit Bowie album is actually quite rare, and worth much more than you think! Also, if you can listen to Trout Mask Replica a few times, even though it's a challenge at first, I think that you will find that it becomes very interesting and so far ahead of it's time, that you may be pleasantly surprised by it.. It's a magical record, and really quite a brilliant piece of work. Please give it a close listen, I think you might be glad that you did! It's famous for a reason.. You found some great records without realizing it! Good job! Lary
That Captain Beefheart Album Trout Mask Replica is a Very Weird album. I can’t get into that one. It’s hard to listen to.
It is a tough one but it is kind of interesting. Lol.
Better off starting with the better and much more accessible Shiny Beast.
Melinda, Great video. We all have our highs and lows when it comes 2 collecting vinyl. Some of the fun is hunting and finding that special record you've been searching 4 . I always have a never ending list that keeps growing! I also love to go to record stores with no list and just see what I discover. It's always awesome to find an album you didn't know existed. I find the greatest value for older music such as classic rock jazz or blues is in buying box sets, new real shoes or originals. The price per record works out to a good deal. There are some great David Bowie box sets that focus on certain stages of his career that come with previously unreleased versions of his fantastic music! Good luck spinning the turn table.🎶🎶
Thank you and I love going into record stores and flea markets with no agenda too. It is fun to see what you find. Good tip on the box sets and I would love to find a great Bowie box set - as long as it isn't counterfeit.lol
Hello Melinda! So true, let's buy what we love! So happy that you completed your VH vinyl album collection. Great album too.Take care!
Thank you and buying only because we love the music is always the way to go.
You should check out the album The former 12 year old genius by Coati Mundi.
has a cool captain beefheart cover on it (am i thinking of the right album?)
@@doorag_nationwide yes!
This video was just recommend to a bunch of us, get ready for new vinyl followers
Hi. May I ask where you received the recommendation? I feel like I owe someone a thank you. 😊 I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and let me know. Thank you
Captain Beefheart bores the hell out of me, and I don't blame you for not listening to any Sting albums --- but you dear are utterly charming. I'd listen to you reading a phone book. Thanks for this video, which contains a lot of lessons for vinyl buyers. I love your concise reviews of each album. Shame on that store for selling a warped record. The manager carefully inspects each record, so he had to know it was warped. Red vinyl is extremely nice! You are one of the most fun to watch video presenters I have ever seen! You are intoxicating in a classy way, lady. Keep up the great work Melinda!
Thank you so much for your very nice compliments. I really appreciate it. I went to the store that I bought the warped record from this past weekend and he saw the video and recognized the sticker and told me to bring it back. That store is great and they are very honest. They have a huge inventory and it is hard to just look at and see the warp. Again, thank you so much and have a great week!
Interesting topic Melinda. The biggest mistakes I make are the vinyl eyes (the lighting in record stores are horrible and I have missed a few scratches) or the warping. Purchased more than a couple with warps so I know the frustrations there. Congrats on scoring that VH album, I know that and Balance are super tough to get ahold of. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you Tim and yes, sometimes the record store lighting makes records look better than they are. Take care!
Wow, your house looks so nice it almost looks like a fake background!
Thank you!
Great video! I once bought the Beatles red album “The Beatles/1962-1966” but when I got home I realized the vinyl inside the album art was the blue album record. I called my local record store and I was able to schedule a trade for the blue album in their store that had the red album’s record inside :)
Lucky break for you and the record store! I'm glad it worked out for you!
Love that VH record, Melinda. Good video about the mistakes you’ve made. We’ve all been there. As a music collector, I’ve done pretty much all of those same things. I enjoy your channel.
Thanks for letting me know that I am not alone. I have made all the classic rookie mistakes. Oh well. Most of the time I have done alright. I like to think someone out there may avoid one of the mistakes I have made by seeing this video. Thanks for your kind words. Anyone who likes the Van Halen album is alright with me. Have a great weekend!
Cool!!! A woman who collects records Usually it's all guys.....
My sister, niece and daughter are into vinyl too. It must run in the family. Lol.

I can think of another reason for TM Replica to be on the holy crap wall.... because that's what you say when you first listen to it!
Haha! Excellent point. 🤗
If you got ears you gotta listen.....
@@bigtone1348 Hey, I love the record... Zoot Horn Rollo is one of my guitar heroes.
@@Wests-nw8cu We saw the Magic Band when they toured the UK a few years ago. Denney Walley saw my Zappa tattoo and said 'Ooh, Margaret Thatcher'.
I've spoken to Jeff Cotton on comments a couple of times. It's taken him a long time to come to terms with the abuse he took from Don.
@@bigtone1348 That's horrifying. You gotta wonder why musicians stay in bands like that. If you can play, you can assume you can work and I wouldn't have thought CB was such a high value gig...
Hi Melinda, the biggest mistakes I have made in the past is buying albums on a “hunch” after only listening to one or songs, believing that it will be good.Thankfully I do more research these days…
Cheers for your great channel
I understand that. I have bought records on the strength of one song in the past. I no longer do that. I have to like the majority of the record in order to buy it now. Thank you and take care.
Great video! These are mistakes we have all made! Hopefully your video will help some people starting their vinyl journey!
That would be nice Bob. Thank you!
*Why are all the beautiful record collectors married?..l.o.l....You've got great taste in music and one lucky husband Melinda!!*
Lol. Thank you very much!
I was in a Barnes & Noble store in Delaware yesterday.
The WHO " WHO'S NEXT"....
$24.99...I bought the remastered expanded CD edition of WHO'S NEXT years ago, for $20.00! So glad I retired from vinyl , 30 years ago!
Vinyl isn't cheap that is for sure. CD's are definitely the better bargain at the moment.
Excellent video Melinda. Very honest as well. I bought Wings at the Speed of Sound on the day of release in 1976. When I played it at home, both sides played the same songs. Since I couldn't afford a second copy I took it back to the record shop and they exchanged it. Looking back, maybe I should have kept a hold of that one😀. Cheers...
Interesting. I have never heard of any Paul McCartney albums that were like that. I think you did the right thing so that you could enjoy the whole album. I guess mistakes like that happened back then and still do. I'm not sure if it would be worth money now or not. Take care.
Your home, what I can see of it, is positively gorgeous!
Your knowledge of vinyl is awesome, I would never have known about the David Bowie counterfeit!
Thank you so much for your sweet comments. I really appreciate it!
Melinda: you not understanding Beefheart is one reason I cant subscribe! It is considered one of the great seminal jazz rock country poetry blues albums of the 60s!
When I made that video I had just bought that record and hadn't listened to it much yet. It is an unusual album but I didn't get rid of it and I wouldn't consider it a mistake. Take care.
@@MelindaMurphy Thanks for your reply. My biggest mistakes include buying Jimi Hendrix's "Crash Landing" which features Jimi on guitar/vocals backed by musicians who recorded their parts years AFTER he had died. A total rip off! You too take care ❤
Dude, that record is objectively awful. I don’t want to have to strain my brain and pretend to enjoy pretentious spooge like Trout Mask...
Safe as Milk is good. But to be performatively snobbish and pretentious and say “I CANT” subscribe cuz you don’t like this rickety album is totally lame
@@zackamania6534 Whilst I agree that not subscribing to a chanel because of a difference in musical taste/opinions is a little silly, it's equally silly do describe beefhearts trout mask, or indeed any record as "objectively bad". The fact that many people, myself included, love Beefheart's music, means that it can't, by definition, be objectively bad.
Do you actually listen to these LPs?
I sure do!
Great video, super humble and helpful! 👌
You are very sweet. Thank you very much.
Wow! Amazingly inspiring video! Thanks for sharing your viewpoints on your vinyl finds!
Thank you so much!
@@MelindaMurphy Welcome Indeed!
My mistake was that I gave-away all my lp's about 30 years ago...
We all did!
not your usual record collector - which makes it interesting
I know it is predominantly men who collect vinyl but my sister, niece, and daughter are into it too. I loved records as a child and that love never left me. Thank you for watching! Have a great day!
Wow this video blew up. Great advice! I still make some of these mistakes haha. The warp mistake is easy to make. That trout mask is a steal!
Thank you Dillon. I bet you have seen just about everything. Lol
You still have that copy I traded you because I loathed this record so much?? LOL!
Great and informative video. Biggest vinyl mistakes I've made were overpaying for some used records. But a big mistake that didn't cost too much was not taking the vinyl out and checking it when buying a copy of Ratt's Invasion Of Your Privacy. Oddly, it had a Ratt album in it. But it was Out Of The Cellar. Eventually got another copy of Invasion Of Your Privacy with the correct album inside. But now I've got to find the right cover for Out Of The Cellar.
As you have seen, I did that one too with The Doors album. Lol. At least that isn't an expensive one to get. I hope you find the right cover for a wonderful price soon.
Why can’t more women who look like this be seen at record stores?? Lol
I know alot of great women who are into vinyl. 😀

I just looked them up. I have never heard of them before. Maybe I will give them a listen sometime. Thank you for the suggestion.
Hi Melinda! When i saw the title of your video i thought this is going to be fun. In all my years of collecting (and fortunately or unfortunately in the pursuit of perfection) i have made some mistakes that i regret out of temptation or stupidity. My first thought of one of your purchases is could that counterfit bowie album actually be worth something?..They sure went through alot of trouble to reproduce it...especially to actually make a new pressing. That's alot of work!...That was also really nice of you to alert the record store owner of the missing record. I just recently purchased several albums each at low prices ($6-$10.each) I've done this before...i'll add it up in my head and realize i could have purchased something rare and that i really wanted for $30.-$50 dollars. Cheap is not always better. I should know that by now. Also just recently i purchased a very rare original record (jazz singer lucy reed) from 1956 in as the seller said in excellent condition. Unfortunately it was in only -VG condition. I kept it and a week or so later i saw the same record in VG+ to E condition so i immediatly pressed the bid button. Now iam locked in to buy it unless someone else places a higher bid. In the meantime i remembered a japanese pressing in mint condition for only $17. But when went to check it it was already sold! Lol! I know your not my psychiatrist but i think i need help. Ha!...anyhow that was a great video melinda and i can relate to your experiences and i know other collectors have some funny stories to tell. Thanks again Melinda..nice you've completed your van halen studio collection!..p.s. There is a vinyl flattener available for around $140. Not cheap but they can sell for thousands of dollars. It's called THE VINYL FLAT. They are on youtube...Did you go to Euclid Records/Joe Schwab in st.louis? They have an excellent site on ebay!
Hi Alan. The madness of being a vinyl collector. Lol. I have went to a record store and found things to only think later that I could have bought a Grail instead. I hope you get the jazz record in the condition you really want it to be in. You can always sell the one you were a little disappointed in. I am very happy to have all the Van Halen albums now. Not a cheap way to go because they won't reissue any of the Sammy Hagar stuff. I can't really imagine that Bowie album being worth anything. Now that I know it is a counterfeit, it just looks cheap to me. Lol. Thanks for sharing some of your vinyl regrets. We all have them. Take care and I hope your weekend is amazing!
Good video Melinda. Im pretty meticulous when i buy used in the wild. The one thing i don't alway check is possible warp. However if a record is above 30+ bucks i do check. Luckily my only warp probs have been new vinyl. Excellent score on your top grail. Funny how something so insignificant when it comes to life still gives ya that excitement of a child on xmas!!!!
I check for warps now too and new vinyl is a much bigger problem. I was very excited about my Van Halen album and I did feel a little bit like a kid at Christmas. Lol.
Sad to see you are a collector....but not a music collector.
TMR by The Captain one of the greatest albums ever made. If you don't get it when you listen to it then you got no soul.
That's one way of looking at it.
Hi,Melinda I was lucky to have grown up when records were the in "thing" and still listening to my record collection. Your video will go a long way to help those new to record collecting.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you hung on to all of your records. 🤗♥️ Take care.
Great video Melinda! I have definitely made some poor choices when it comes to buying vinyl! I am so much more careful about what I spend money on! I think this was definitely a cool topic to discuss!
Thank you and we all learn from experience. It is awesome that you are getting smart about it at such a young age. Have a great weekend!
Melinda Murphy thank you, you too!
You resemble Martha Stewart
This women way hotter
God you’re rich
That would be nice but no unfortunately. Lol.
What a cool idea Melinda. We all make mistakes. Thankfully I haven't made a large dollar one yet, but I have walked out with the wrong album in the jackets a few times. Luckily those were dollar albums. Awesome get on the Van Halen album. It feels so good to get those albums you've been wanting for so long. Congrats and keep rocking.
Thank you and yes I am very happy to have the VH album. It was expensive but they are my favorite band and worth it. Take care!
Another great vid! I'm heading down to Phoenix in a couple of weeks to do some vinyl hunting, and I plan on taking into account the tips you've provided, since I wouldn't be able to return them in a timely manner. So, thanks for doing that! I've been there a few times, myself. Regarding Captain Beefheart, "Trout Mask Replica" is very much an acquired taste, which I still have yet to acquire. Even years of listening to Frank Zappa (who produced the album) didn't prepare me for that album. Maybe it'll click with me, someday. Anyhoo, have a great evening!
Well thank you very much. Please don't repeat the mistakes I have made. Lol. Just attention to detail and research will keep you out of trouble. You are probably a smart shopper and wouldn't have done any of this anyway. Have fun and happy hunting!
I dont understand why you are buying records of Music you don't like.. Not my cup of tea.. In the 80's as a teenager I bought the albums of the artist I liked.. Not to collect them but to listen to them..
I do buy the music I love. Even the ones I rarely listen to have a couple great songs on them.
You should describe your listening system. If you're passionate about your music that should carry over to your choice of gear.
I enjoy the idea of just picking up a few records you’ve never heard before and you might end up finding something you really like
As an 18 nearly 19 year old I second that, I buy only what I like and if it's cheap what I might like and therefore take the plunge on something random.
No point buying what you know you won't like and is just a waste of money/space (if multiple) for you. But I get people can be influenced or think they like something, but don't etc
lol what a square
nah just playin'. i'm envious of that orig copy of "trout mask" is all, mine's a boring ol' late '70s warner bros one. do you like any other beefheart recs? this isn't the easiest one to get into or in my opinion even the best one.
Hello! The only other Beefheart album I have is a promo of The Spotlight Kid. Most people recommend Safe As Milk.
I bought the "deluxe CD/DVD" version of "A Different Kind Of Truth". The DVD is them singing a few songs acoustic. I really liked it. DLR sounds pretty good on it too
Oh wow! I would love to see that. I will have to see if it's on UA-cam somewhere. Thank you for mentioning this. ♥️🤗
Hi Melinda. I LOVE this topic. That's a crazy story about the Donna Summer album. What a coincidence that you were able to get the second album like that. As for the counterfeit, sorry to hear about that. I wish we didn't have to keep an eye out for things like that. I have made the same mistake of not looking for warps, and been burned. In your case, it wasn't entirely honest of the record store to call that an extra nice copy.
Have an excellent weekend.
Frank
Thanks Frank. The record store owner and I were both shocked that I found that second Donna Summer album like that. What a cool coincidence. There are more fakes out there than I had ever thought so I try to be more careful. Have a great weekend!
Damn what’s your husband do for a living
If Don was still alive he'd be appalled at the hollow, materialist hipsterism on display here. Believe me, you will NEVER be able to appreciate TMR, not in a thousand years.
That's what I was thinking...Don would be rolling in his grave if he knew Trout Mask got sandwiched between Donna Summer and Rhianna...
On the other hand, he must be rolling in his grave anyway ever since Jack White re-released TMR with a cotton bag, a button badge, a patch and a real trout mask in the package, so it would be sold exclusively to the kind of people Don hated!!!
@@bosco7837 Thanks Chicco, wasn't aware of the JW sacrilege. So it goes. By the way, is that one of Don's paintings above the fireplace? 😀
Great video Melinda. I had no idea my David Bowie album was a counterfeit. You mentioned those details and I pulled my copy and confirmed it's a counterfeit. My son did some additional research and there is a couple seconds edit on the audio as well. Keep it up.
I'm so sorry to deliver the bad news. If it is a record that you have always enjoyed then I wouldn't let it bother you. I found out it was counterfeit before I listened to it so my opinion was tainted. Thanks very much for your really kind comments. I appreciate the encouragement.
I'm not an expert on Bowie collecting but I had heard (quite recently) there were a lot of counterfeits of that album.
@@Leepal1969 there are more counterfeit than genuine.

Sorry Melinda, but Rihanna??? Almost as bad as Justin Bieber. A talentless "model" who warbles a few lines into a computer and technology takes care of the rest.
I agree and I'm not a huge fan. This was a video about vinyl buying mistakes.
@@MelindaMurphy I would not play one of her records I would prefer total silence instead.
Rihanna is awesome! Rated R is a great album
What in the world would a woman of this caliber of wealth and class doing buying a twisted eccentric album like Trout mask ???? EEEW gross this is unpleasant
Funny! I bought it for a really low price so I could keep it, trade it or flip it. It is a pretty out there record.
Some great advice there i think that will really help people just getting into vinyl and that 🙂 i recently bought the cranberries album on cd but i already knew what it was as i heard it the day i ordered it i really liked some of the songs 🙂
Hi Melinda
My local store has a record dewarp machine. I dropped off a record. They bake it slow for like two hours and then it cools slow and most of the warp is gone. It works on up and down warps but not warps that distort the roundness of the disc. It's worth asking your local indie stores if they have one, so you can fix your Atom Heart Mother record.
Our local record store was going to fix it for me however, the record store that I bought it from saw the video and told me I could trade it in. Both record stores were very nice about it.
Great information on the Bowie record. Keep up the great work ✌️
Thank you so much. Unfortunately, there are alot of counterfeit records oof that album. Take care.
Hi Melinda. Finally remembered to sub after seeing many of your vids. Captain Beefheart is certainly not for every body. I have a recent repress and struggle with it as well. I am a big VH fan as well (DLR era). I purchased the vinyl of Different Kind of Truth when it came out. I think I set my expectations too high though. As a result, was somewhat disappointed. Wish I knew you were after it as I would have been happy to send it to you in some sort of a trade. It’s nuts how the price has gotten out of control on that album. Maybe, I should revisit it, give it another chance. Used to do VC videos years ago but thinking about coming out of retirement for Mrhallofame’s 6000 subs contest. You have a great presence in front of the camera Melinda. Keep up the good work!!
Good for you that you did buy Van Halen when you did. You should revisit it but after that, just know you have a hot item worth some money that you could trade or sell. I plan on making a contest entry for Brandon's contest as well. I hope to see one from you. Thank you so much for the sub and the kind words. I really appreciate it.
Hi Melinda - glad you got to complete your VH collection. What a cool topic. Boy, if I started listing all my record-buying mistakes, we'd be here for a while. Here's one that has caught me several times - not checking to make sure the record is 33 rpm. I have several 12-inch records I've gotten home with and...remember the old V8 commercials? The guy is at the vending machine with a drink and then he smacks his forehead and says "I could've had a V8!"...same thing. I should've checked! But who thinks about that? Thanks for the fun video Melinda!
Haha. I remember those V8 commercials. Lol. Good analogy of us as record collectors. 😄
Hey Melinda. Great video. We have all made mistakes in the vinyl buying world. The captain beef heart looks awesome! It is on my want list and I think it’s awesome that it is. Preserved in the loc. ✌️
I haven't fallen in love with it but I do appreciate it and understand the complexity of it. I hope you find a great copy soon!
Great video...you should make more! I've been collecting for many, many years and sometimes I still make some of these obvious mistakes as well. BTW...Van Halen IS INCREDIBLE. You should have let everyone know what your favorite van Halen album is for kicks. Mine is Fair Warning. Very underrated classic.
Thank you. I have been making videos for about six months now so there is much more content out there on my channel. My favorite VH album is Women and Children First at the moment. Fair Warning is a very solid album with some amazing songs on it. Take care.
My wife is a big Bowie fan, so this is incredibly helpful! Thanks. - Ralph
I make it a rule to open new vinyl at the store (after purchase) to check for defects such as factory scratches, and if they have a turntable on sight to check for warps. If I find an issue I can immediately show the store and get a refund or swap for a good copy. Saves me a lot of time.
That's a great idea. It would be hard to argue a refund or exchange if the record hadn't left the store.
Enjoyed the video. Great topic. I have made all the same mistakes in my years of collecting. I also bought the same counterfeit version of The Man Who Sold The World many years ago. Sigh! What tipped me off was the bad sound. I ended up giving it to a friend that wanted it.
My Bowie record sounds bad too. Lol. It is good to know I'm not alone in making these mistakes. Take care.
Thank you for talking about this subject. This happened to me recently. A double album that only had one record......lesson learned
It happens often!
I just stumbled across this video as a suggestion. I collect vinyl myself; well, up until this pandemic I did anyway! I sympathize with your buying mistakes, as I've had some myself in the past~ not vinyl-related though. I usually get records from places like Goodwill and other thrift stores, and I've made a concerted effort not to spend a lot of money on one album, even if I am tempted. Fortunately for me, my music tastes are (apparently) unique, and no one else is really seeking what I like. That is, 70's and 80's disco and country music. I now have quite an extensive collection of LPs with the likes of Barbara Mandrell, Ronny Milsap, Crystal Gayle, and one of my favorites: Olivia Newton-John! No one else wants them, but I sure do! 😁
Hey Melinda, I think most of these mistakes are down to the old 'vinyl eyes', which is countered by the phrase 'you live and learn'. I still succumb to it from time to time!! Congrats on the grail👍cheers- Dean
Great topic. Research is definitely the key. I have been known to pull my phone out and a quick look on discogs and Spotify to see if it’s my jam while I’m standing in the shop, nothing wrong with that. Nice VH!!
That's a great way to do it Brendan. I have become more careful along the way. It is harder to do at a flea market but I am definitely more careful!
Great video. It's fun to hunt and collect. Thanks for sharing some of the purchases you regret. Pretty sure I've made those same mistakes.
Thank you so much!
Hi Melinda, I really enjoyed your video. In 40 years of record collecting, I've somehow managed to avoid Trout Mask Replica, and based on what I've read of others' impressions of that album, I think I will continue to steer clear of it. My only exposure to Captain Beefheart was Shiny Beast, which I didn't really enjoy and traded soon after I acquired it. Incidentally, I listen to a lot of transgressive / experimental / odd music, like Nurse with Wound for example, and I never feel bad about admitting that I don't enjoy something that is considered a staple in the genre. Feel free to like what you like, or not like it! Thank you for your opinion of the Cranberries album. I don't have any of their works on vinyl, but have been thinking about springing for some of the reissues. I met Dolores O'Riordan when they were in the U.S. promoting their first album and they were incredible in concert. You did a great job of reviewing the Van Halen album. Have you ever heard David Lee Roth's Eat Em' and Smile? That's such a great record and I don't hear it mentioned very much.
I have and love Eat em and Smile. That is DLR's best album. Cool story about meeting Dolores. A huge fan would love this Cranberries album. I was expecting all the original songs and music and that was why I was disappointed. People say that Trout Mask Replica has to be listened to a dozen times before one can appreciate it. Why should we have to work that hard to like an album? Lol. Great hearing from you and have a great week!
Another awesome video, those things happen to me too fortunately there's only two record shops in the Island of Oahu, but I've made those mistakes at the swap meet because I went too fast, fortunately the records were cheap enough but still.
I just had one last week from the Salvation Army, I was looking at a Montrose first album and it had the wrong record and it had an Olivia Newton-John, well guess who bought the Olivia Newton-John album lol, never knew Montrose and Olivia Newton-John played together, now I have a Montrose first album which I like in a Olivia Newton-John record album cover. Lol. I hope if I go back they still have the Montrose album cover then I can buy it with the Olivia Newton-John record in it because I already got album jacket , really enjoyed watching your channel thank you again. Now I don't feel that bad even the greatest collectors with knowledge make mistakes too. The good part is now you have a lot of Records to make a contest with. Aloha
I love Oahu btw. Very interesting story about the Salvation Army. I hope you find that Montrose record. That would be great! I am far from a great collector or extremely knowledgeable but I will take the compliment. 🤩 Thank you and have a great weekend!
I think our emotions run high when we find something we have been looking for or just think someone made a mistake when pricing a record. I have bought lps and then realized I should of looked closer on condition and the proper disc. I have a check list in my head I go thru before I buy a record and it is what you just covered in your video, right disc, warps, first pressing for me, and no scratches I can feel with my fingers. Your Bowie looks like record club pressing because it has the three bars at the top right corner. I wonder where it was pressed and if that might be the reason for the difference from a in house Mercury pressing. I will check and see if I can find out anything. Nice video and don't worry about the errors we all in the VC have done the same. God bless you and your family.
WOW, you are right about the Bowie being a fake. I looked on eBay and there is a bunch like yours for sell and people are selling as originals and not knowing. Discogs has yours there with all the info about it, I did not know they faked this record either. I guess you learn something new every day.
Thank you so much for your kind words. If you find out anything about the Bowie album let me know. All my research points to it being a counterfeit. I would love to be wrong though. You listed some great tips to keep in mind while vinyl hunting. I have definitely learned some things along the way. Take care and have a great weekend!
Great video. Many times I've returned messed up records and the store shelves them with no note and with the same price tag.
That's just wrong. Hopefully most won't do that.
Hi Melinda, I really like your channel. I too kick myself in the butt for not picking up A Different Kind Of Truth on vinyl when it came out. Same reason you had was because I didn't have a turntable then. Now I do and the best price I found a sealed copy on eBay was for $379. Some are even selling for a lot more. I'm glad I have it now.
The price is ridiculous. I paid too much but at least I didn't pay what the going rate is now. Congrats to you too! 😄
Great subject Melinda as you were talking about your mistakes a little grin came to my face Yes Ive done that too I thought,I think sometimes we get so excited about a find that we forget to have a really good look at the record and we can miss things.
On a brighter note this week I too found a record that I had been looking for George Harrisons 3 lp set All things must pass and its an original 1970 Australian first press picked it up for a fair price and it plays beautifully.
All Things Must Pass is a killer find. I love that album. It is tough to find a good copy but it sounds like you have found a great one! Congrats!
Such a great video Melinda! Unfortunately these are all very common issues lots of us encounter along the way. We have to be so focused for detail. Pricing, warps, incorrect records, counterfeits, list goes on :)
~ Shaun
I made some common rookie mistakes. Lol. I have learned it over the years. 😃 Thank you so much! Take care.
@@MelindaMurphy One of my rookie mistakes a few years back when I started collecting records, I was tired of not encountering any Led Zeppelin records at a reasonable prices and at the time the reissues weren't out yet. I was at a record fair and I stumbled upon Led Zep 1 & 2 in mint fresh new condition. During that time I had no idea they haven't reissued them yet. Bought them without checking. Arrived home and they were counterfeit one was in Green vinyl, the other was in Clear vinyl. I still learn to take my time and check before running off :)
Let the buyer beware. This was a good idea for a video. I'm always too casual when picking up records. All excellent advice. Thank You for sharing.
I definitely have become more aware as I keep collecting. It is impossible to know every counterfeit out there but I have developed a better eye for things most of the time. Take care.
What a change! Captain Beefheart to Donna Summers... Saying the Trout Mask Replica is different is one of the greatest understatements...
It's definitely the most unique album in my collection. 😀 Thank you and have a great weekend. 🎃
Great video Melinda. You got me thinking now.... off the top of my head I can say I have bought a few records because they were cheap and wasn't familiar with them.... some I've liked and some I've not liked.
I did buy an album from what I thought was a band I really like (Eclipse), at regular retail price thinking this band had released a new album called "Reigning Days", but no, as I was in a hurry and didn't research properly at the time I later realised back at home that it was't the same band at all. The band was called Reigning Days and their album was titled "Eclipse" and I didn't really like their style of music so that was a complete waste.
I did resell on eBay, but only for half the price of what I paid, lol.
So glad you got the Van Halen record. If they are limited to so many pressings they do go up in price unfortunately so the resellers can make a profit.
I have also paid over the odds for some records too, I have to admit. 😬
Thanks for sharing your story. I can easily see me making that same mistake. Lol. Van Halen needs to reissue this album but I'm not sure if they will. I just decided to take the plunge on it. Take care!
Take all the great deal that you got and compare them with the bad deal and you might see that you are still ahead. I have flattened two records this summer. I have two 13 in sq pieces of pane glass and I use the sun to do the work. I've practiced with cheap records and I'm pretty good at it now. Great video. Bill
Thanks for your positive outlook on this. I have had some pretty amazing finds so overall, I have done good. Someone has offered to fix my warp for me which was really nice. It still plays it just looks a little like a roller coaster. Lol. That is cool that you have mastered the art. Thank you and prayers your way.
Very nice and honest videos you have here. I like a lot. Greetings from a new subscriber from Finland )
Thank you so much! 🤗❤️
Clever idea Melinda on this video. Nice tidbit on the Captain Beefheart. A very popular band in the VC that I just can’t get into. I’ve tried but it just isn’t there. Would love to own some original pressings of the Cranberry’s. I was lucky enough to grab that VH lp at a good price. I think 30 dollars. Only track I like is Chinatown. Enjoyed! Andre’
Needless to say I paid way more than $30 dollars for the VH album. Good for you. Captain Beefheart is just a little weird for me but I like having a copy to play every once in a while. Take care.
Hi Melinda, another great video. One of my big mistakes, I picked up a copy of The Yes Album, brand new. I did not get around to playing it for a while, only to find it has a massive warp. Ouch! I totally agree with the don't buy it just because it is on sale motto. I have also purchased some that were on sale, that I just don't listen to very much.
Sorry to hear about your Yes album. That stinks and warps are way too common with new records. I have stopped buying records just because they are a good deal. I have to love the album. Take care!
@@MelindaMurphy I am using your same buying philosophy, if I do't plan on playing it a lot I don't buy it! Have a great one!
Nice video. I enjoyed it. I grew up with older siblings and one of them would purchase records every payday Friday. He started buying in 1970, Most rock music LP's. He accumulated around 2500 or so records by the time LP's were stopped being pressed. He then started with CD's lol. Anyways he's now in his 60's and none of his grown kids are interested in his vast LP and pretty good amount of 45's too, collection. I do remember back in the day seeing a Beatles LP. But not a Capitol or Parlaphone label LP but a Veejay label LP. Anyways just wanted to share my story. Looking forward for more of your videos.
Very cool story. I kinda wish I was his long lost cousin. Lol. I hope you will benefit from what must be an amazing collection. Thank you for sharing.
