1991 Sparkomatic Bass Cannon STW800 100W Max Amplified Subwoofer
Back in the 1990's the Sparkomatic Bass Cannon was likely the most common car subwoofer available at auto parts and big box stores. Capitalizing on the popularity of the SAS Bazooka Subwoofer Tubes, the Sparkomatic Bass Cannon stood out with it's crazy cool graphics and low, low price of $89. It also promised a MAX power output of 100 watts. Now we know what this means, but how many people didn't and fell for the trap? Also, was it really that bad? I was super curious and had to get one to find out.
(Note: the woofer has a coated paper cone, not poly as I stated in the video)

As a guy in his very early 50's, just seeing this brings back so many memories of the car audio scene back in the late 80's early to mid 90's. Sparkomatic, Kraco, Craig, Realistic, etc... All the budget stuff. And with the right stuff paired together, it would actually sound pretty decent. Ive been doing this car audio stuff entirely way to long, and I still love it.

Cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this video BigD!! I had 4 of these where I used the subs in an infinite baffle configuration, even used their little amps, and these things pounded! Drove a 79 Monte Carlo with these 4 8s banging away, eventually moved up to 2 Pyramid free-air 12s with a Pyramid 800 watt 4 channel, I was in heaven then! I still think of these setups to this day!! Thanks for the flashbacks!

Back in high school, early 90’s this guy was telling me about his new Bazooka 10” sub he had just put in his Toyota MR2. After school we went to his car to listen to it and I remember being highly impressed for what it was. No really low bass to speak of, but the amount of mid bass that hit you was pretty astounding. Super hard hitting sub. First time I ever experienced nose flex at the time. Not the type of bass I was into, but impressive nonetheless.
Now ask me about the guy who had two old school Savard 12”s in his Honda Accord and I will tell you that system set the standard for me back then. Those Savards were no joke.

I'm glad I managed to get my hands on a pair of non-powered 6.5" Bazooka tubes in the mid 90s which I used with a 75x2 amp in a couple different vehicles until 2000.

This was my first subwoofer given to me by a friend of a friend back in the early 90s. I was only 11 years old and tinkering with electronics amplifiers and stereos dreaming of one day having a car with a bad ass stereo. This was a real time-machine video for me today, and has certainly altered my mood for the better. I hope someday to come across one of these again, and restore it to its former glory.

I ran 2 of these in my boat back in the 90's. I had them under the swim deck, on each side of the gas tank. Because of space limitations, and the fact that I didnt care too much if they got wet, they fit the need pretty well. I also had a dual 8 Bazooka tube in my Mustang Gt, then in my S10 convertible. I still have all of these things in my capped garage, the bass cannons, bazooka, mustang and s10, but not the boat. Lol

I've always liked paper cone speakers, even some high-end ones use higher quality ones. The issue is when it's also the surround, or really cheap and deterioration prone. It's funny how it can be both one of the best and one of the worst materials for a speaker now that I think about it lol. Dali is a speaker brand that comes to mind, but they call it wood fiber.

Sony head unit and an 8 band Majestic eq/pre Amp. I worked at a stereo shop in Miami and we were doing big installs before people even knew about Bass music.(Miami Bass.) I had two of these in my Vega rig back then. They weren't strong enough with everything else so I yanked the internal amps out, wired the coils in series, and used a properly crossed over real 100 watts per channel amp. I also had to reinforce the port end to kill that exact noise he was talking about. The speakers really were good for the money. The amp was crap and the cabinet was under engineered. I solved all that. Used them for quit a while.

Looking back, that pales in comparison to my current NVX 800 RMS, powering my two ten inch Polk audio subs and Pioneer 1200 watt powering my four Fosgate 6.5 inch door speakers. I was rocking one of these in the trunk of my car back in Highschool. (mid 90's)
The built in amp crapped out, so I ran it with a Rockford Punch 75. One channel for each voice coil. I fed the speaker wires through the port.

Me and brother had one of these Bass bazooka tube by Sparkomatic.
We had one in the ford XR2 car back in 1992 to 1994 in the UK.
These were sold in the UK 🇬🇧 around £100 to £120 in the UK.
I got a feeling I still got the amplifier sitting in the wardrobe at home for that Sparkomatic Bass bazooka tube.
That amplifier has got two TDA7360 ICs that drives a 8in dual voice coil subwoofer.

The amp mounting to the speaker magnet is actually smart design, they can add all the acoustic damping around the tube and the speaker should help cool the amp with it's voice coil venting on the magnet besides it pushing air all around it. I actually was thinking of these a few days ago lol, and wondered about having the speaker fire into the tube instead of out of it, then have a small compartment for the magnet and amp with a mesh back or something like that and no acoustic damping or port, just an open tube. I think there was versions like that.
Another thing I just thought of, have speakers firing into both ends of a tube, then have bass ports along the side of the tube. Or maybe 3 drivers firing towards one another in 3 tube ends, then the tubes merge and curve into another tube that acts as a port. Not quite towards one another but facing a similar direction but angled slightly towards one another in their own tube openings, where those tubes merge, I hope that makes more sense lol.

The overall design isn’t bad, where they went wrong was the chip-amp type amplifier. Custom grill, custom box design, and they still went cheap with the amplifier and relatively generic woofer. I still love seeing this old stuff. edit: And yeah the dual voice coil arrangement is a bit unexpected in something like this at its age.
