yes the disparity btw rich and poor students when going to college is very real, but her own mistakes are the reason she's $60k in debt

60k over 3 years isn't that much assuming she had a good major like comp science, engineering, or something like that. Good luck Angelica, don't give up. You look very smart and you are very lucky to have Fred and your family.

While I do sympathize with her and her situation, a lot cannot be ignored in this case. Yes, we have a massive class division problem when it comes to education. Those that come from higher socioeconomic statuses are far more likely to complete and receive a full college education, as they are more likely to afford it.
However, Angelica graduated high school with a 3.9 GPA, that's insanely impressive. Why not apply for scholarships if college was going to become inevitable within the foreseeing future? Her GPA already stood out from other competitors. Secondly, if money continues to be a massive barrier when it comes to determining if college is going to be a possibility, why continue to choose such an expensive school?
My advice to those watching and wondering how they may be able to pay for college. I highly suggest enrolling into a local community college and transfer into a four year university. You receive the same core classes you normally would at any four year university, yet, obtaining one at a much lower cost and (if eligible) you can receive financial aid which can even cover book expenses. Please do not let the influence of your peers cloud your judgment about the benefits of community college. Currently, the nation's student debt crisis has reached 1.4 trillion dollars and is steadily growing. Theses are debts that will follow you throughout much of your life. Think things thoroughly.

Because she didn't file FAFSA on time. Which is by all standards an idiot mistake.

I feel for her but situation is due to a whole bunch of different reasons--not mainly that she is low income. firstly, if she didn't fill out her FAFSA in time or correctly when she did, she shouldn't bother going to an expensive school or go to college a year later. Everyone has internet and could research and plan these things out without the aid of a counselor. At least then, she didn't have to pay so much. Secondly, the fam said it was 40,000 a year, but I'm positive that is ONLY the tuition. She also lived on the dorm which is usually an extra 20,000 per year. She could have went to her own state university next to home and pay next to nothing for only 20,000 a year maximum. It seems to me that she mainly went there due to the popular and prestigious name. I'm a low-income student myself but the problems she had were uninformed decisions more than her being a low-income student. If you're low-income, making SMART decisions that get you to the SAME goal is better.

Simple math: 600 bucks a semester at community college, or 600-800 a month to feed the student loan corporation.

Wow. I'm surprised of the comments. This young girl is not a foreigner, she's an American. She was a brilliant student who tried to secure the best education to make her life better and her families life better. When institutions in place to help those who need them fail, why does the individual get the blame? It doesn't seem to matter how smart she is or the potential she has to offer. She is poor, so she should just stay poor? Why should she not get the chance for a 1st class education?

She messed up big time, I personally turned down a god school because it was high dollar, and I knew my degree wouldn't support that kind of debt for at least 10 years. People put too much importance on what school they go too and not enough on realistic costs. Reality check once you land your first job your degree becomes less important than your work history.

Some people are privileged, not all of them are white. Some only children will have better opportunities but may not use them due to being spoiled and not learning to appreciate what they have. Circumstance dictates that those of us who recognize want and ignorance acknowledge and address them and we as people unite our efforts to lift everyone while defending others, and ourselves, against violence and hatred.

let me get this straight... she has a 3.9 GPA but didn't apply/ get any scholarships? when she didn't get any money to go to school she still chose one of the most expensive schools in the country?? and she didn't' do her fasfa????? AND she had her bf cosign for her?!! honestly she did this to herself. with that GPA she could have gotten buku $$ in scholarships and also she shoulda never gone to emory with no $$. IMO

you have no idea what h er high school was like. It's more proof of the pudding that she did so well early at Emory. I'm surprised she never told her mom or she even tried to contact the school. She should have sat out that first year and started the second to have a solid financial aid package...not private loans.

Any comment on how women are now 60-80% of college enrollment and graduation? And that number is increasing? That could use a look.

I can relate to this video. Whites are born privileged, and just do not understand the disadvantage of being a minority.
