In this video we are showing you how to remove and replace the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley on Mercedes w163. We demonstrated on a 2000 ML430 but it should be the same procedure from 1998 to 2005 for the v6 and v8 engine which will cover the ml320 ml430 ml350 and ml500.
If you hear a noise coming from the belt it is very likely to be a pulley. The way to diagnose it is to remove the belt and spin them by hand. If they have a play or they are noisy you will need to replace them.
    This procedure should work for:
1998 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement
1999 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement
2000 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement
2001 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement
2002 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement
2003 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement
2004 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement
2005 Mercedes w163 ML320 ML430 ML500 ML350 Idler Pulley and Tensioner Pulley removal and replacement

2002 ML500 W163: Thank you for your very informative video. It truly helped me today. The Idler Pully wore out and broke in half. The serpentine belt fell off the engine at 4:30 am on the expressway. its still out there somewhere. The Battery light came on. Power steering stop working. The engine kept running on battery power and got me all the way home without failing. No power steering was brutal turning corners and parking but I love this car and will never replace it. Thank you once again for your video.

Pretty much the exact same reason I'm here watching this video. '01 ML320, Tensioner Pulley broke while driving, lost the belt and therefore power steering (luckily less than a mile from home). This video is very informative and helpful! Thank you World Mechanics!

This seems to be a common issue with the idler pulley. I had it happen to me, I see it happening to just about everyone.

Dude, if your belt breaks, don''t drive too far. Your water pump will stop turning and most you'll likely overheat the engine, possibly leading to head gasket issues.

      @@elgiacomo how's the car now?

    • @elgiacomo

@@chuckstewart5775 The car is pretty good considering its age and mileage. Driving it every day. Not maintaining it as well as I should due to finances, to be honest. Losing a few drops of power steering fluid. Have to add some oil here and there. But runs strong and drives well.

Thank you for showing how to get that back bolt in the bent tensioner!!!! This is the best video series for weekend wrenching!

Terrific video. I was able to do this without removing the fan and kept my fingers more or less intact. I used a couple of socket wrenches linked together to give my assistant an easy way to hold the tensioner aside while I removed the lower bolt. The replacement part had a pin in place so it was no big deal to get to it for the install. I had tried in vain to get a pin in the tensioner to ease in removal but just couldn't get the hole to line up.

Thanks for the video. Could you please provide details of all the sockets, wrenches and tools you used. I am not familiar with the star shaped socket you used for the top roller. Thanks again for all the great W163 videos.

I'm in the middle of replacing my tensioner pulley, idler pulley and water pump on my 2003 ML500. But, I've hit a snag.
I was able to remove the two E-12 bolts that hold the tensioner pulley to the motor block. But, it doesn't seem to want to come away from the motor. Your video makes it look like it should just come right out. is there any trick to extracting it other than removing the two bolts???

Wow great video Brotha, t was nicely done, in-degth and you explained everything so that I understood. I'm looking forward to seeing more videos. When my belt came off, I had 1 of 2 choices before my vehicles ran hot , drive to mercedes shop or home. I decided to drive home to check out a few videos to see if it was something I could do. Now I know how to do it. Thanks!!!

I have a 2002 ML500 with a broken tensioner pulley. The tensioner itself is fine but the pulley is broken. How do I remove the pulley FROM the tensioner?
A replacement pulley will arrive in a few days, so I may have a better idea then.
    Thank you in advance!!

My idler pulley doesn't have the torx bolt... instead it's just a bearing covert that is completely smooth except for a divet in the center with a small pin dead center. How do you remove?
