So strange how this song has memories of travel for so many people here. Well it's kind of the same for me too. I was a student in Valencia, Spain - all of 24 years old - when this song came out 10 years ago. I remember walking back home from the city centre one night, around 2 am, drunk out of my skull, listening to this song on repeat. It was a quiet, breezy summer night, the streets were empty, everyone in the city was out on vacation, and in two months I was about to get done with my course and leave Spain forever. That night, I thought back on all the amazing memories I'd made there. All the friends, all the parties, the paella afternoons, the sangria evenings, the beer nights. People from all around the world converging there just for a year... possibly never, ever to meet ever again. And the highs and lows of that year, spent alone in a foreign country. The loneliness you feel, amongst all the people you're surrounded by. All of those images played in front of my eyes, to the tune, melody and rhythm of this very song. Every once in a while when I miss Spain, I come back to this song. But more than anything, I know I'm missing that part of my life, those people, which I will never get back. Thanks, Jamie XX for this masterpiece.
This has been my top favorite song for 6 years now. I remember listening to it on repeat while walking around New York at 3 am. Going through empty Times square and there was a fresh smell of air after a heavy rain. This song has absorbed a lot of memorable moments and people throughout those years, There is a pretty significant chunk of my soul in it
I was listening to this song on repeat throughout my flight back to London from Dubai. This song was absolutely mesmerising to listen to whilst looking out the plane window, watching the clouds and the sun go by. Just as the plane was about to land at Heathrow, flying above London overlooking the Thames and the City lit up at dusk whilst listening to this gave me shivers. This song reminds me of that East London vibe and takes me on a journey.
Krisna Adiyatno i also had an experience like that listening to jamie xx -sleep sound. It was a nightflight, flying above the Pyrenees looking at lightnings coming from storm clouds. An amazing sight and experience. Very peaceful.
I was sitting behind you on that flight and I could hear you were listening to Spice up your life on repeat. It didn't bother me until you started dancing in the aisle. Just sayin'
This song invokes so many memories from my childhood in the UK. Right near Hackney. As soon as I hear the intro I’m taken aback to those innocent times as child. The world being a much bigger place
I know it isn't quite what you asked, but check out We're New Here. Jamie xx Remixing I'm New Here by the excelent Gil Scott-Heron. But yeah, I do agree with you, hurry up with an LP yeah?
The first time I heard this song was in the car - it was dark and we were driving on a narrow road that went through the deep NH woods. My seven year old son was in the back seat and he said "this song sounds like it was made by someone who was very happy."
It's funny how inaccurate that is. These aren't happy vibes. It's the long, slow scraping of love. It's the hurt, the monotony and the toil of loving someone who doesn't really see you. That's how it makes me feel, anyway. It's that somber bassline that does it, I think.
This one holds a special place in my heart, I could call it my favourite song of all time for not needing lyrical complexion to be an overwhelmingly powerful song that really has raised spirits for me and my family. Yeah, it's that good.
I remember listening to this song when the EP came out. Song completely captured my attention and overshadowed the rest of the tracks on the release. Still holds true today.
Easily one of my favorite songs of the past couple years. Jamie did a flawless job creating this piece of art. Possibly even created an entirely new genre of music
For those wondering, the vocals are sample and integrated from IOU by Freeez. (I tend to get really into a song and all these little behind the scenes stuff so I figured someone with that same mentality would benefit from this knowledge! :))
Basically a letter you send to a university to express your interest in a course. You'll start writing it at the beginning of your second year at college, or sooner if you're really keen. Mad respect for being in year 8 and listening to Jamie, I wish I had good music taste back then!
I just imagine a huge waterfall and I'm underneath it, it's a little dim, the wind strikes my face, I can feel the dew on the air too... It's a feeling that'll never go away no matter how many times I play this song.
Watching Top Boy Summerhouse for the first time and hearing the vocal sample unlocked a part of my brain that played this entire album on repeat for a solid month. Incredible.
I used to hear this song in a supermarket, on late night shopping trips. That sounds boringly banal, but it's from a collection of good memories, back when I made such things. I have no idea what the lyrics are, but looking them up would spoil the mystery.
That moment at the party when my kids and I hear Freeez's IOU and scream "JAMIE XX - GIRLLLLLL!!!" to each other across the room...at that moment right there, I knew I was parenting right 🖤
Johan P. There are sounds that are merely sounds, like a single frequency beep, it is not music because elementarily, music, has mechanics, without mechanics there cannot be music. Mechanics can go as near as rythm or as far as composition.
Adeoh By personal aesthetic, I would agree - I don't consider a lot of things music in a personal view, but by definition, that's simply not true. If 4'33 is a piece of music, aleatoric recordings are considered music, setting a microphone in the middle of traffic to record is considered music...then yes, anything can be considered music. Including a single frequency beep, if it's so decided. Once again, I personally side with you; I don't think everything should be considered music, but critical consensus disagrees.
Recording traffic is called a field recording. Field Recordings are not music, they are mere audio. They can be put in a song, but for mere texturization. Field Recordings by themselves are not music. A single frequency beep can make music, yes, but by itself it's just audio. That's the difference between audio and music, audio can please you, music can please you too, but they are two different things.
Saw him last night and was rolling so hard, got some crazy closed eye visuals during this song, like the music became of part of me and was filling every sense
ive been through some rough times man but Jamie XX really kept me going, always remember to treat others how you wish to be treated and have respect for your peers
This track should be written as Jamie XX feat. Kano - Girl. That's him with the opening line, taken from season 1 of Top Boy when Sully (Kano) is talking to his daughter: "You're the most beautiful girl in Hackney, you know?"
Siempre me acordare de Ana, una persona que conoci y que en vida tuvo mucha valentia, buen sentido del humor y amor por los demas. Recuerdos de ella en mi carro y yo diciendole "tu canción". Descansa en Paz
Ive been listening to it for a few days now, never heard of him before and to me this is what a soul hears on the trip to the peaceful place of the final rest.
I can't believe this is Jamie XX. Doesn't sound like what I'm used to by him. That doesn't mean I don't love it, though. It's amazing and I hope he continues in this direction.
Just watched Summerhouse, and had the strangest deja vu-feeling when I heard the line. Hadn't heard the track in ages either. Strange how the mind works, man... The line appears about 19 minutes into the third episode og Top Boy: Summerhouse, for those who want to know

Krisna Adiyatno There's something about being in a plane/airport and listening to this type of music that takes you to whole new level.

@@eriao05 That sounds just gives so much more soul to the song. Jamie is a genius

Jamie xx is seriously one of the best producers out there. He comes up with badass tunes. Really sick job! xx

(I tend to get really into a song and all these little behind the scenes stuff so I figured someone with that same mentality would benefit from this knowledge! :))
There’s four samples used in this song, but IOU is such a classic track.
Was listening and trying to remember what it was from, usually I can get samples pretty quickly. Thanks, saves a lot of frustration.
This song always makes me feel like the most beautiful girl in Hackney

Everyone is anyways beautiful in their own unique way...

My favorite song for sure.. If even a song, more like sounds that pleases me
Sounds that please you are called music
Adeoh Well, if you look into music history, then pretty much anything and everything can be music. John Cage and Arnold Schoenberg come to mind.
