Yes, it is very effective. Regardless of how you rig, the buoyancy amount and size matching the hook is the key. In the 80s I remember an article ( It might have been the NW Fishing News back then, don't remember ) that showed a similar setup but slightly different. Steve's way is easier to do and he has shown it works well. The other one had it on extra tag end line sticking up on top. There is one thing that I don't like about it and it is I don't like anything that increases the tension on the line rubbing from the paint on the corky. I am sure it isn't a huge problem though because Steve catches fish and he has tested it extensively. Everybody just has what works for them, what they have confidence in, and what they prefer. Just have to try things. If you use the right size it ensures it has buoyancy so the hook doesn't go down away from the cheater or corky. You have to use the right size to get it so it doesn't sink or is so big it obstructs hooking ability. Some people peg with a toothpick instead to achieve the same. However, for me it is not what I always do ..... just an option depending on what where how . I should however I don't always pre tie all my leaders and pick out the size, color, style of baits I want to use at the river. I believe in always being open to try and learn new and better things. With that said, I do find that there are only few variables for each river and I find I use the same setups most of the time so I probably could just pre tie lots of them 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I stick with what works for me personally. Fish On !!!
@@raybaby thanks..you are right I did serious testing with the line and Cheater before I ever posted anything. That said . I have never had a crotch break..at the line in the Cheater..I have had the Cheater split in half and was gone on several good big kings. It's a soft material thankfully.. When I use beads on bad pressure days same thing except of breaking beads of coarse..but never had a crotch break with them either..you right about the key being buoyancy of the entire set up. Small is miniscule and fish tend to suck and spit vs turn there head...it's doesn't spook them. The first thing I noticed when I saw your channel..was you catch fish! Lol. Nice to incorporate ideas and constantly evolve to catch more fish..lol
Yes, that is why I use cheaters majority of the time over corkies. Although I have tons and use corkies, corkies chew my leader up too easy sometimes so I prefer cheaters. Corkies do have nice colors though. Unfortunately, for some reason cheaters are harder to find and costs so much more. You would think they would be cheaper. Just yesterday I went to restock and they were 8.99 for 25. I said no way and looking at other options now. I still have enough to probably last my lifetime, however you know I can't have enough LOL.
I think you are asking Steve this question and the one above ? I will PM Steve so he knows. For me, I think the traditional egg loop probably does help in not pinching down as much if rigged that way, but I haven't tested it out like you guys have so I don't know. Steve thoughts ? Just based on how I usually fish tying, re-tying rigs, etc.... on the spot so much I just learned to do things the way I do it where I can almost do it with my eyes closed pretty fast so it works for me. I never had issues with knot failures with the way I tie it and I can do it so much faster even in low light or my failing eye sight ( have to wear readers to see small things anymore ) so I do lot by feel now LOL so there are only few occasions where I take the time to do the regular egg loop to fit the setup I am trying.
Brayden, Just search for Blue Creek Trout Hatchery. It has a big parking area by the boat ramp and lots of public access. From there you can explore. Most people go down river from the parking lot at the ramp. Also try Barrier Dam area. Make sure you read the regs from WDFW. There are some closed spots and other restrictions. The steelhead run is starting to wind down for the winter-spring though. Good luck and Fish On !!! If you got FB, let me know how you do. If you see me on the river, stop by and say hi please.
It is still going, but very hit and miss. You don't know if you don't go is what I always tell myself. I will still continue fishing once or twice a week rest of this month hoping to hit it right. The fish still trickle in, just getting near the end of the main run.
Take a look at the hatchery report on the WDFW site. You can look at each year and see when the numbers increase for each river system. Summer run, Winter run, Late Winter run, Chinook, Coho, etc... For the Cowlitz winter look at Mar, April time frame. Spend some time investigating available information, check out spots, etc.... If you have more questions please message me on FB. Link is on my channel page. Thanks and good luck.
It varies some depending on the gear and water conditions. In, general when drift fishing It feels like a elastic pulling or pumping pull. If you are in good contact with your gear ( no big slack or extra line bend ), it is ticking along the bottom. Then suddenly you get a sudden slow to quick pulsation through the line bending the rod tip. The pulsation is the motion of the fish swimming in the current and-or shaking its head. With good line, rod, and techniques its distinctly obvious you have a fish. Good drift fishing skills is with practice because it's not like you see a bobber go down visually. Thanks for the question. Fish On 🎣👍👍👍

Nice one, big fish! Where did your hook go?
The hook is still in the fish mouth, but my line was caught up on camera mount on net handle. I took the hook out
@@raybaby ahhh I see was wondering where it went
Hey, I’m new to this area and I am trying to get my first steelhead, if you don’t mind telling me how do you get to this spot.
