This is so good - very succinctly put. I have a very recent TikTok account and wanted to use it to park my short videos because I can't really combine them on UA-cam unless I did a separate channel. I wouldn't ever count on TikTok for my business for all the reasons you mentioned. It is the biggest time waster of all the platforms... I have found that even by opening the app to post you are swept away by short videos and before you know it an hour... a whole HOUR... can have gone by. It's really quite disturbing and in terms of mental health and more it's also destructive as it pushes a certain type that does well - for a time. In fact if you want to be completely discouraged about your art or anything else in your life that doesn't match the performative nature of TikTok... then just hang out on TikTok for a short while and you'll wonder why bother to even create anything ever again. The algorithm is brutal. When you first start it boosts your posts with hundreds of views... then it restricts your views until you create content in the manner of what the algo wants. I dislike time-lapses.. they offer very little yet I found myself posting the things just to see if they'd get a better reaction (they did, barely). But they do not help my business. And here we are also with UA-cam trying to mimic TikTok with their "shorts"...Artists do not need social media. Social media needs us. In fact we are being morphed into "content creators" churning out "content" for these tech platforms to run ads and keep eyeballs on their platforms. All of them do this. So I agree 100% with you. TikTok is definitely not the best place for an artist. It is probably the worst. Have your own website, a weekly or monthly newsletter, even a ko-fi site... and get back to slow and steady reaching out to your real fans - people who love what you do and can support in a way that sustains you and your art and business - and keep SM at arms length. From my experience I can attest that this is really is what works long term. Thanks for the video Louise - and your newsletter is a great read too.

It’s so soothing to listen to your videos. It’s in a slow pace in contrast to so many other videos online. It’s great to see that this also can gain a large audience. As you say, it’s not good for our mental health that we are bombarded with content with fast pace, not giving us time to listen before something new appears.

This video comes at perfect time. Last week my 11y.o. cousin visit me, and she and her mother ending recommending me to post my art on, precisely, TikTok. I reject the idea with jokes, saying that just managing Insta is enough for my "old brain", but the girl keep pushing: "But look, even I have 1900 followers!". And that's exactly why I don't like TikTok. My cousin is a normal 11 kid, she just post her face with filters, playing with her mom... Who are these almost 2000 users seeing that content? They can be other kids, or they can be a specific type of adults. Definitely not my public.

Hi! UA-cam recommended me this video and I'm super grateful, because I relate so much.
I hate how the focus has shifted to super short videos on all of the platforms. I'm lucky to stay away from TikToku but I really felt pressure when IG reels were introduced, I created 2 and decided that it really isn't something I want to do, that it's not my style and I just kinda left IG. My motivation came back and I started creating for myself again and I'm much happier! It is really nice to hear that I'm not alone in this.
Also this is first video from you that I've seen and it was incredibly satisfying!

Mental health has taken a battering lately, so I have taken both IG and TikTok off my phone. The relief is immense. I feel less tense and I have more time and more focus! That said, I don't think I can completely remove myself from either just yet, and will likely use it as a portfolio page. But sitting and scrolling is just horrible and anxiety inducing.

I find that women tend to fear missing out on what their friends are doing, as if they'll be outcast or forgotten if they don't post or connect via IG, etc. Guys probably feel similarly, but many that I know keep very few very close friends whom they can actually see in person every so often, and they have more physical types of outlets, so they don't feel as attached to antisocial media. If your friends just forget about you, they aren't friends. Your anxiety is self-induced and you already know the answer to it.

Hello Louise, when I started painting I lived extremely anxious and stressed to have that pressure from social networks, I was 20 years old at the time and it was very problematic for my anxiety, nowadays I am 24 years old and I left instagram aside and social networks of this type, where everything is very fast and nothing really seems to matter but a passing fame, my art has evolved a lot and I also after leaving it, and I emphasize what I said, it is possible to be an artist and have sales without exposing yourself to the ridiculous for it, without leaving your values aside, very interesting your video!

I think it's a realy well made observation on our attention lenght getting shorter, but i personally don't think such short format was meant for showing art process, but rather for finished art like short comic to a certain music (with whitch as far as I'm aware tiktok started it's journey) or art that's funny itself. Because for me, that's what the app is about - jokes and happines - leaving me to feel like some of us forgot app's original idea and are trying to force it to become more like youtube (with longer videos) or other social media to which i don't see a connection right now.
I think it's a waste of potential in some way

UA-cam has been a thing for about fifteen years.
When it first began, I wanted my own channel. Back then, I was too busy to do it, but I thought that it would be neat to have a place for the pictures, videos, and stories that I enjoy creating. I was unaware that there was money to be made on the platform.
Somewhere between then and now, I finally heard enough UA-camrs asking me to click the like button, check the description box, and so on, that I eventually figured out that some people were selling t-shirts and such from links in the description box, and I thought that was neat. I also thought that it would not be cool to have a garage full of unsold Ts.
More recently, within the past three or so years, I’ve figured out that creators sometimes earn income from ads placed on their content, and some creatives are sponsored by brands, on both small and large scales.
Still, when I was figuring out that UA-camrs could earn money via the platform, I thought that it might be something like a couple of thousand per year.
WOW! I was *way* off in my estimation!
There are some who have monthly earnings that would pay off my thirty-year mortgage!
I hadn’t realized that UA-cam could BE a legit biz for creatives. All this time, fifteen years, I did not know…
Yet, I have benefited from the content of UA-camrs.
I now know that clicking to like, subscribe, comment and share are four things that I can do to help those doing the work to grow their channels, even if I am not buying whatever they are selling (though I sometimes do that, as well).
As for my own channel, which I finally started in June, I decided to stick to my original idea, of simply sharing what I think is interesting, helpful, beautiful…
There will (eventually) be things that people can buy, if they want to, and I do look forward to the day when I meet UA-cam’s monetization criteria, because it is important that my business be profitable, of course.
I’m really here, though, just because I want to be. I am a fan of the UA-cam platform for about a zillion reasons. And, with a global reach, I don’t worry about finding my niche or my ideal client avatar or the other buzzwords of the marketing mayhem that I do not understand anyway. Instead, my concerns revolve around learning the best ways to present my ideas so that they resonate with those who resonate with me.
There is overflowing abundance all around us. For some, perhaps that’s money. For others, a loaf of freshly-baked bread. Sometimes, those with money have nobody to bake for them. Be happy with what is, and ask yourself how it can get better than this.
The answers will come. Be receptive to them. 😊
