Regina cheat a little…. Grab the bottom of the wheel palm down. If you want the trailer to go left take your hand left Right take your hand right. Small inputs and number one…..nothing fast should ever happen in the cab. Slow is smooth and take your time!!!! Good luck!
Another awesome video! I love that Regena is more present on the videos and sharing her input. And I love that she makes dessert while camping, something I’ve been a little apprehensive about.
Hey Brad and Regina, been watching your channel for over a year now, as a medical student, sometimes studying gets a-lot, and your content gives me a peace of mind away from stress. Keep it up, another great video!
Hi Brad and Regina, Loved the collaboration between TrailRecon and Ozark Overland Adventure. Two amazing channels. Perfect trail, water xings, dirt, gravel, rocks and some mud and nice scenery. Love it! Awesome episode. Thank you 😊
I grew up about an hour away from Medano and have really been itching to take the trip over the mountains to the Dunes rather than going around like we always did in my childhood. Beautiful.
2 highlights for me: Regina’s growing comfort with backing the trailer, and Medano pass backwards. Being from Texas, my favorite route across southern Colorado is from the east over Medano pass to the dunes, then to Creede and up the Rio Grande to its source via 520 over Stony pass to Silverton, often taking the side trip to Kite Lake.
A tip when reversing with a trailer. When you in a straight line position with jeep , put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel. Turn then the steering wheel from the bottom grip in the direction you wish the trailer must go 😉
Next year we are doing a road trip all the way from Central Mexico to Moab! On the way there we are visiting Great sand dunes National Park and doing Medano Pass!!!
Regina, it looks like you already love your Blackstone grill....it won't be long now until you will want a large one for home. Its awesome for when all my kids are home at once, and I can make an entire breakfast for everyone and have it all finished at the same same time. Keep practicing backing up the trailer. Like anything new, it takes a lot of practice. Don't get discouraged. After you become a pro, just think of the funny stories you will be able to tell. Great video guys!!
Thanks for the awesome video. I am a San Luis Valley native, but I've been living overseas for over 3 decades now. Seeing your video of those places I know so well give me a huge does of nostalgia. Glad you made your way out that direction to enjoy those amazing places.
Beautiful territories, nice views at camp, and I swear I could almost smell that food cooking! Regina, it looks like you are slowly getting the hang of backing up a trailer. It can be a little like cat herding, I agree. You might try practicing with an empty parking lot and some big, empty cardboard boxes. Once you can get the trailer moving in a straight line, try adding some boxes in a pattern for obstacle avoidance. I trained my daughter this way, in little baby steps, now she can back a trailer up like nobody's business! Good luck, and keep at it. You got this! 👍
A perfect episode that had it all, even sand dunes. Can't go wrong with beautiful Colorado. The cooking segments are great and I really appreciate this addition to the videos. Most recipes are new to me so very interesting.
I know this is a year later , and the misses should be backing well by now , however that being said , a little trick I learned when backing short trailers , put the transfer case in low , let the vehicle idle , keep the foot off the throttle as much as possible , computer controlled engines wont stall as easily as the old carb points engines , this allows the driver to keep up with the trailer , use the mirrors as much as possible , and keep all steering inputs small . Enjoy your channel , thank you for letting us tag along
Regina don't feel bad about backing up a short trailer with a single axle. They are very tricky to keep straight and react to the smallest steering inputs. 👍😀
Delightful travelogue. Glad you got to do Medano and the Wet Mountains. Those trails were the ones that convinced me an overland rig was what I needed. And only now do I discover that you know the "you need to talk to these folks about tires" Ozark Overland crew. Ha!
I know that highway well, as well a Medano Pass. I've always done it east to west so sometime I want to go west to east. OH BOY!!!! Blondies!!! They are yummy. More ideas for trail/roadtrip meals... Shrimp quesadillas... Thank to both of you for this video. Until next time... Travel safe.
Wow, reminds me of my younger days, 4 wheelin all over; really miss it; and use to eat bison all the time back in the 70’s; loved it and the elk, I like both equally; thanks for the memories 😎😎😎😎👌👌👍👍🤩🤩
Great video. I've been following you and Matt for about 2 years now and it's good to see you together. And don't worry Regena, it take practice backing up a trailer but you'll get the hang of it. And short trailers are much harder to back up.
Brad, you should start with the trailer backing by placing your control hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and just move your hand the way you want the trailer to go
Wow that dinner of elk and bison in that camping spot made me so jealous. Everything about that looks amazing, glad you enjoyed Colorado again. Come back soon!
Matt and Cara are good people...hopefully you will get to wheel with them in the Ozarks soon. Matt has some amazing campsites and water crossing... not to mention some cool wheeling buddies ;)

Great video! I enjoyed seeing Regina's confidence build from last video to this with backing up the trailer (you got this girlie :) ) and the FOOD- come on! Looks so incredible ! Makes me angry hungry LOL
I was the guy from Arkansas who spotted Matt and talked to y’all on the trail before you camped. It was my first time doing Medano Pass also. I ran it from east to west (opposite y’all) and it was outstanding in the morning coming down and seeing the Sandunes rising out of the rocks as you come down the pass. Great video and now im following your channel too. :)
One of the tips I have been shown for backing up the trailer is to grab the bottom of the steering wheel and turn it the way you want the trailer to go. It works well if you don't need to do a lot of fast or sharp turns while backing.
We did the Medano Pass trail as a group coming home to California in 2012 from a two week Colorado trip. On our ADV motorcycles. Seeing that really long creek crossing and all of that sand brought back memories, not exactly good ones! I believe the trail was actually closed and gated for a number of years following a fire and winter erosion damage. Good to see its open and passable again.
I appreciate your videos and your general enjoyment of the natural environment. I’m an avid backpacker and hiker and climber living in Colorado and constantly seeking out quiet places in a crowded state. I just want to say that very loud vehicles (mufflers…) and OHVs produce a lot of noise that echoes throughout virtually every canyon here these days. Noise pollution isn’t all that different than finding litter on the ground. Both detract from the solitude and connection to untouched nature we pursue in the backcountry.
Hey Regena, I’ve been told by people more skilled than I to hold the bottom of the steering wheel with one hand and the way your hand goes will be the way the trailer points.
For backing straight, if you start to see the trailer in the left mirror, turn the wheel to the left to straighten out … right mirror turn the wheel to the right. You will develop muscle memory where turning the trailer will get better with practice. Always try to back so the trailer turns towards the drivers side so you can see it
Enjoying the video on a nice Sunday morning. 6 day work week this week, so nice to kick back and enjoy.. Family and I have done Medano several times from west to east and east west. Camped and hiked the trails in the area. The hike to Medano Lake was not very difficult and very rewarding once you reached the lake.
@@TrailRecon For sure! Beautiful area and definitely a lot to do. The Sand Dunes are really cool in the spring as the snow melt has the river flowing pretty good in front of the dunes.

On one trip he discovered it wasn't in his kitchen box. He rummaged through the garbage, found a beer can, cut the bottom off lined it with paper towel and used it as a "drip coffee maker". 🤣

OMG Brad you need to come to Louisiana so I can make you some coffee! Looks like an amazing adventure. I love living vicariously through your adventures.
@@TrailRecon Give it a try with a jelly or preserves you know you like alongside savory. Love your videos! A good tip that I used to help me learn to reverse trailers was to put one hand at the 6:00 position on the steering. If I want the rear to go right, then I steer right. Same for left, of course.
I remember visiting St Elmo, up at 12000 feet. After an hour or so milling around town, my wife and I climbed into my 1988 Grand Wagoneer, and we pulled out to do a 180 and head back to Fort Collins, when the Wagoneer stalled, then stalled again. And again . . . We finally broke over the edge of town, and coasted down the mountain. The AMC 360 finally fired up down around 10000 feet.

@@frenchie4wd I have not. I usually like to get out meats from the local butcher. He has not had Elk. I would be "game" for trying Elk. The local butcher had some ground Yak. A little pricey, but good.
I've been trucking since the '70's and backing a trailer that short is a skill even I haven't learned. 48' or 53'...? Piece of cake. So more power to y'all. Keep working at it. Also had a question: I used to piggyback commercial trucks from place to place and had a trailable "skid" I'd pull behind my pickup. I made the mistake of visiting my best friend set up this way. He lived some miles off the pavement. The banging my hitch got rattled the welds loose. Do you experience any issues with yours going through all the various terrain you do? Thanks again for another great adventure guys!
I've had the X1 for over 2 years now and put a lot of miles on it and taken it on some pretty technical trails, it hasn't had any issues to date! Thanks!

That drive to the Sand Dunes looks like the one we just took from Durango in May. Beautiful country, awesome adventure guys.
Beautiful Colorado!
Regina is so cool!
Amazing overlanding.
Awesome video as usual. Loved the last trail and the epic campsite. Putting it on our list when we visit Colorado.
Coming from crowded country like India where camping is almost impossible, I love to enjoy these kind of vidoes
Welcome to the TrailRecon food channel😎
Fantastic job. Great people.
Bison….good stuff!
But have you tried Elk!?
@@frenchie4wd I have not. I usually like to get out meats from the local butcher. He has not had Elk. I would be "game" for trying Elk. The local butcher had some ground Yak. A little pricey, but good.
Superb video..ya'll eat better than I do at home...lol..thanx for sharing trip.
Thanks!
I have an X1 and same as Brad no issues
