I have quite a few of these DASH appliances. I’ve use a few, mostly the waffle maker and the air popper. Love them both. I have a pie maker, Bundt cake maker, rice cooker, dog biscuit maker and many more. They are all great.
I use a round piece of parchment paper over what ever pie I was cooking. Allows me to leave the pie in longer to fully cook. Sometimes I double the parchment rounds. Finally, I also press down on the top of the pie maker with a kitchen towel for about 30 seconds (hot to the tough) with some force to ensure the top of the pie maker connects with the food. This work well for me.
I think the problem with the lattice top is that weaving the lattice from strips of pastry causes high and low parts. Two ideas would be to weave it on the counter top then roll it flat before cutting a circle for the pie top, or using one of the rollers that cuts lots of slits in the pastry and stretch that over the top. That way the crust will be an even thickness and should brown more evenly.
I have 2 solutions that might work for the crust. Cut out a ring with foil to keep edges from burning then remove to brown while it finishes cooking. For under cooked crust. Place crust in pie maker then close lid to cook the bottom first then add filling and top to finish. Let me know if you try this.
Know it has been a while but- tried this a few different ways- rolled foil ring cut out works while cooking the crust- then regular flat sheet ring for the filling and stuff- doing pumpkin pies- you may have saved pies for me. (yay not just frying eggs in it)
Try a piece of parchment paper. Crumble it up then flatten it out .place on bottom of maker, add crust, ingredients, then the top. Fold over the rest of the parchment paper on top. it helps so it does not burn. I also plug in once all ingredients are in and ready to cook not before
Thanks for the review. I just got one for only $5.99. It's a present but I plan to make mini pies on new years eve with the kids. I think we'll give the crust a few minutes on it's own before filling. We'll also make the filling ourselves so they will be thickened and hot from the stove before adding .
My favourite pie, that we make in our pie maker sometimes, is tuna and egg pies. Also, a tip for anyone who wants to watch their weight is instead of using pastry, make pizza dough and use that instead. It holds up very well to being taken on picnics as it is not as crumbly as pastry, but still tastes very good.
I am passionate about Cornish pasties. Your solution sounds a lot easier than making a “real“ one from scratch with chopped potatoes and rutabagas and turnips and stuff. About five years ago when we were in London and it was our last day and we didn’t have anything particular to do and we still had another day left on our rail pass we decided to take the train out to Penzance - a dash to Cornwall to have a true Cornish pasty. We had less than an hour in town to buy our pasties before the turnaround and we really needed to catch the return train because it’s a 6 hour train ride each way. It was a long way to go for a lark, but we had real lamb Cornish pasties in Cornwall. (I have to say that they were heavy with grease and salt and not what we’re used to here, but I could see that it would keep a Cornish miner nourished all day.)
I just picked up the pie maker at Target because it was $5.99, or so? Came here to see your review. It is just me and my husband now, so I thought this would be great in the evenings when we crave something sweet and don't need a whole pie. I guess I will play with it as well
Great review, thank you. If you want a great crust for your pumpkin pie, bake the crust first then pour in the pumpkin mixture. 😊 My favorite pies are apple, lemon meringue, coconut and chocolate cream!
I have one too. Don’t have the undercook problem. Cook till golden brown…cook a little longer. Also, lay the dough even & flat for even for even browning. Makes a difference💙
Just a thought but your pumpkin pie filling might have been too runny. I usually buy it canned and it seems more dense. Thank you for the review always enjoy your videos!!
I roll out the store brought crust & pastry dough as it's too thick just like baking for regular oven (not much just a little). I'd cover the crust with foil just like baking any pie in a regular oven. I'll buy one, or the bundt cake pan because now I'm cooking for one since my husband passed I haven't been cooking like I used to.
great review! especially happy to see the puff paste included for comparison, as well as no upper crust, regular upper crust, and lattice upper crust. my dash mini bundt and mini pie makers arrived today, so have not used them yet, but did watch both of your videos just now, as well as having done some research prior to ordering. i didn’t go through all 151 comments 😂 but i noticed a few suggestions here and elsewhere that looked helpful. i’m only commenting on the pie maker here because, as you mentioned, the mini bundt seems a lot more straightforward and just works!i’m sort of sorry i ordered the pie maker now. i might check out the cuchina pro which one of your other commenters said bakes a lot more evenly than the dash. also just noticed qvc had a vid on a dash pie maker which flips, like some waffle makers - don’t know if it’s still available, and did not catch the cost, but that might eliminate the underdone-in-places top crust. 1. re burned crust edges on pumpkin pie, your idea of cutting the lower crust out smaller so as to not extend into the crimped edge area is great! as well as your suggestion to make sure to put enough filling in so that the whole upper crust is touching the top surface of the maker 2. and cutting out aluminum foil to cover the crust edge before it overcooks makes sense. 3. for undercooked crusts, the instruction booklet does say to roll the pie crust a little thinner than usual, specifically mentioning pre-made pie crusts, which you usually don’t have to roll at all, so that might help with the undercooking. 4. and also for undercooked crust, you could pre bake the crust before filling. 5. for undercooked filling, maybe get that nice and hot before pouring or scooping on top of lower crust. but really, i think the pie maker is just too much trouble. looking forward to mini bundts though!
I think this would be great if you needed to make a lot of mini pies. You could start them in this for 3 or 4 minutes and then transfer to a sheet pan in the oven to finish baking. You get a perfectly shaped pie with crimped edges and no need for a bunch of little pans.
Thanks for sharing I am a diabetic with a sweet tooth this would be good to do as you said just bake it part way and finish in the oven it would be great for chicken pot pies
@@yourdailybread8611 if you still have trouble getting the bottoms completely done my suggestion is to go to walmart & pick up a couple cookie sheet trays ( the disposable kind , tho you DON'T HAVE to dispose of them until after a few uses ) the ones with the stretched steel open vented look to them to get maximum air flow under the pies should do the trick ...👌👍👋💃❤💋
I really appreciate you doing the different tests and showing the REAL results. I was planning to buy this to make my vegan pumpkin and sweet potato pies and I think I'll pass.
This Mini Pie Maker is so COOL! When I googled this AWESOME product, I see its available also here in Mexico! Thanks for sharing 2c Chick, liked and greetings from Querétaro! As for my favorite pie, gotta be Sweet Potatoe Pie!
For the pumpkin & breakfast pies that are more liquid filling, you could try baking the crust for a minute or so before adding the filling, then bake for the recommended time. That might help with the undercooked crust. You may have to add pie weights to keep the crust from rising on the bottom. I'd be interested in baking meat pies in that li'l guy. Thanks for the review.
This unit doesn't get as hot a regular oven (the plastic housing would melt). It's really only two hot surfaces, somewhat like a waffle iron, to cook pie crust that's in direct contact. The pies in the pictures in the recipe booklet were probably partially cooked in the mini cooker and then finished in a regular oven. The reason that the mini bundt cakes cook completely is because there's more surface area against the heating plates and there's less thermal mass that's not in contact with a heated surface to bring up to cooking temperatures. If you use fully cooked fillings, it works really well. And pre-made pie fillings, apple butter or pumpkin butter works okay. Just keep in mind that any fillings that are cooler that room temperature may not fully heat through and it won't cook any raw fillings.
I have something similar that does smaller ones. I haven't used it in awhile but didn't use pie dough I think I used biscuits or crescent rolls that I just cut into the circles. They were good.
I love the egg cooker; I think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread because I HATE removing egg shells, but with the dash it's a breeze. My mom & oldest sis always laughed at me and my hard boiled egg calamty.
Nice to see another review of the Dash Mini Pie Maker. And you made me glad that I did not get this one. The size for this is really nice, but I had read and watched reviews on it and uneven cooking was the biggest complaint or issue with this one. So I got another brand that cooks evenly.
@@2centchick Cucina Pro. You can do 6 at a time but they are smaller. It is really nice for doing Brownie Bites. I got it from Amazon but I know Walmart site has it as well.
Look up Ken Click on UA-cam. He came up with the ultimate pie crust for the Mini Dash Pie Maker! It cooks on top! Also...fill your pie full, and high enough for it to touch the inside top lid.
Making your Crust and cooking it in the Dash Pie Maker first is key 🔑 for a few different styles of Pie 🥧 . I love the "Ice Box" Pies and Pudding "Dream" Pies from the 1950s and 1960s, Custard and Tapioca are a close 2nd.

Great review and thanks for being honest. Gooseberry, raspberry, apple, dutch apple, pumpkin, rhubarb, pecan, and the list goes on, but i will not eat cherry or mince meat pie.
Hi! I'm a fan and enjoy your reviews. May I suggest you precook the dough in the Dash baker before filling them? When I make myself deep dish pizzas, I precook the dough for 5 minutes in the oven before adding the sauce and cheese and then returning it to the oven to cook at the normal duration. So try precooking them for a couple of minutes. That may solve the issue of the dough being uncooked where it meets the filling. Also, do you think warming up the fillings a bit (like the apple one) would help the fillings cook more quickly? My favorite is peach pie. Edit: I just noticed Donna Ostrin's and Glinda Ford's comments. I think they definitely have the right idea! 😁
Thank you for your Dash review. I really didn't think that it would work well for the same reason. I couldn't imagine how the crust would cook and not burn. My favorite pie is Apple. Have you thought of reviewing the dash pizzelle maker? Love watching you. Thank you for being honest. Hugs and blessings
Like yourself I am not of fan of short days and the winter. All so,like yourself I am a fan of the Cracker Barrel. Mostly the Breakfast menu. My personal favorite is the Country Boy Breakfast and Uncle Herschel 😋 Sampler. Their Muffins and Pancakes are terrific. YOUR DOING A GREAT JOB FOR ALL OF US DEPENDING ON YOUR EXCELLANT REVIEWS. Keep up the great work,Cathy.
I had the same experience with this product! Crust was either under or over cooked and some of the fillings just didn’t cook enough. I did try a chicken pot pie that was probably the best one for this machine because the filling was pretty much precooked.
I'm kinda thinking that they do use the top crust cut for a pumpkin, let it cook for 5-6 minutes, and then add the rim of the crust to get the pretty edge. I don't see how else they could do that - unless the pictures they are publishing in the booklet are false advertising.
So many pies listed in the comments! I’m gonna have to look up shoo fly and Indiana sugar cream. I think my favorite so far is Dutch apple pie though! Butterscotch and custard are also in my top 5! For pecan pie, lots of people say that it is too sweet...until they try mine. The secret? Use more pecans!
This reminds me of those sandwich makers that there were infomercials for back in the 90s… I wonder how crescent or biscuit dough would work? The concept for this is great but it needs more wirk…
Dash has been around since 2010; I love their egg cooker as I hated boiling eggs and dealing with shells that tore up the eggs even as I followed the Professors ( Mom & Sister's) step by step instructions for dummies. I use the Dash griddle to heat up burgers ect; I wrap them in foil (microwaved heat up's are nasty) for some foods. I have purchased kitchen small appliances costing hundreds that are simply junk. I roll out the pasty & pie dough a little because it's too think and cover the rim (just like baking any pie) with foil or a store bought crust protector.
I was told to roll the crust dough thinner. About half the width of regular pie crust. I found it odd that they didn't offer a pie crust recipe. Would have liked to get the dough cutter thing.
I found an awesome pie crust recipe for the Dash Mini Pie Maker on UA-cam. It’s on “Ken Click’s“ channel & it’s called the “Ultimate Mini Pie Maker Crust“ I hope this helps!
My daughter likes the grill maker/mini pancake maker. Looking at the cutter I don't know why they didn't make the top cutter bigger than the base. It would make more sense since the pastry will shrink when it cooks. Your right always fill more full than it says. Once you figure out the glitches it works fine.
I had bought one of these and totally forgot about it.. I woke up this morning to see what I could do but the outside definitely cooked.. borderline burned but the inside was very raw .. the cooked bit tasted great but definitely raw on the inside. I did look up another gadget from the same company that’s just for cooking the pie crust/Bowl though.. it’s like $8 more but Target has them in stock online too.
cover the edges with foil. if you cut out a piece of foil using the little pie crust cutter, the top part, and then using chop sticks score the inside to remove the portion you need exposed for the enter to cook and brown and you’ll have a perfect little open circle to cover the edges only. you can reuse it too. also cut out a strip of foil and place under the pie before assembling and when it’s done you have an easy way to lift it out of the device.
I would put shredded cheddar cheese on top of my apple filling. Think that would improve it, then add either heavy cream when I serve it, whipped cream, or Vanilla Ice Cream. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmy
You made my two favorite pies, Apple and pumpkin. Thank you for showing the issues with this maker. Did you use canned apple pie filling? If so did you cook it first or put it straight out of the can? We’re the apples done or were they too crispy?
try cutting a piece of aluminum foil in a circle cut out the middle to fit just the edges. Like you would on a regular pie. I would spray the bottom with a butter flavor spray oil just to brown it. Cook the bottom crust a few minutes before you add the filling and top. See if that would bake it thoroughly.
You definitely have to play around with this mini-pie maker to figure out how to make it work for you. (Kind of like a bread maker in that regard.) I always use parchment paper to keep the pie from burning on the outside before the dough cooks through completely. I get best results by microwaving the fruit filling separately, and cooking the bottom dough for a minute or so with the top open before adding the filling and top layer of dough. You can use a little water, milk or egg wash around the edges to make sure the top adheres to the bottom crust. Press down gently on the top for the first minute to make sure the two halves of the pie dough adhere. I've had no luck with puff pastry. The only way I've been able to use puff pastry is to roll it out flat, doubling the size, which just about kills the "puff", unfortunately. For pumpkin pie, it's better to use pumpkin puree (precooked with egg, powdered milk, brown sugar and spices, cooked beforehand) rather than the liquid custard they'd have you use. Again, let the bottom crust cook for at least a minute before you close the top. If you find your bottom piecrust getting soggy, you can put egg wash or powdered sugar on the crust before adding your filling. I like that it's easy to put coarse sugar or cinnamon sugar on your pie for the last minute of cooking. You can also roll store-bought piecrust just a little bit thinner, which seems to help it cook all the way through. When you take the pie out, turn it top side down to cool so the bottom crust won't crack open. Once I got the hang of it I really liked the mini-pie maker, but there was a bit of trial and error before I got it right.
After your last Dash review, not only was I inundated with Dash videos, also Dash ads we're showing up in my Gmail account. Google owns UA-cam, so I wasn't surprised at all on both accounts. Pumpkin. Good video.👍
I have one of these, but it is bigger The brand is Bella. Cathy have you seen the product called Pizzazz Plus? I have one and love it. Maybe you could review it??
Roll out the dough to makes it thinner and it will bake much more crispy. Also, press foil over the edges before closing the lid.

1. re burned crust edges on pumpkin pie, your idea of cutting the lower crust out smaller so as to not extend into the crimped edge area is great! as well as your suggestion to make sure to put enough filling in so that the whole upper crust is touching the top surface of the maker
2. and cutting out aluminum foil to cover the crust edge before it overcooks makes sense.
3. for undercooked crusts, the instruction booklet does say to roll the pie crust a little thinner than usual, specifically mentioning pre-made pie crusts, which you usually don’t have to roll at all, so that might help with the undercooking.
4. and also for undercooked crust, you could pre bake the crust before filling.

@@2centchick so excited to see you review it!!! Thank you so much Hugs and blessings
Cherry pie for me…hands down!💕
I just ordered one !!!
I wonder if you could pre bake the puff pastry like a few minutes in there by itself then the egg mixture
That’s a good idea! Thanks
Nothing beats the oven for a pie. These little cookers are perfect for college kids.
A store bought pie would be a better choice than this thing.
Campers, RVers, and people who are alone.
@@judegirl7607 true. We take it i our roadtrek. And all my college kids had one
I'm kinda thinking that they do use the top crust cut for a pumpkin, let it cook for 5-6 minutes, and then add the rim of the crust to get the pretty edge. I don't see how else they could do that - unless the pictures they are publishing in the booklet are false advertising.
That might work, I’ll have to try it. Thanks
I put foil around the crust so that it doesn't burn.
This reminds me of those sandwich makers that there were infomercials for back in the 90s… I wonder how crescent or biscuit dough would work? The concept for this is great but it needs more wirk…
I’ll have to try a biscuit and maybe a cinnamon roll. 🤔
There are metal rings to protect the outer crust for your average pie pan size; maybe DASH will make one for their mini in the future?
I agree with the other viewer. Cut a piece of foil to go around the edges, I just bought mine, so time to experiment~
Is the pie dough sold in stores, or did you have to make it from scratch?
Great review. Thanks for trying out so many methods. Too bad it's the product that falls short.
Thank you for this tutorial/review video! I ordered the Curtis Stone duo one..with the 2 Pie/Bundt cake insert plates included on HSN? 🩷
I was told to roll the crust dough thinner. About half the width of regular pie crust. I found it odd that they didn't offer a pie crust recipe. Would have liked to get the dough cutter thing.
I found an awesome pie crust recipe for the Dash Mini Pie Maker on UA-cam.
It’s on “Ken Click’s“ channel & it’s called the “Ultimate Mini Pie Maker Crust“
I hope this helps!
I wonder if you roll out a Pillsbury bun or biscuit real thin, if it would make a good pie crust. Cute, as all their products are.
I can’t find the Bundt maker. The pies look cute but the crust looks undercooked
cover the edges with foil. if you cut out a piece of foil using the little pie crust cutter, the top part, and then using chop sticks score the inside to remove the portion you need exposed for the enter to cook and brown and you’ll have a perfect little open circle to cover the edges only. you can reuse it too. also cut out a strip of foil and place under the pie before assembling and when it’s done you have an easy way to lift it out of the device.
I would put shredded cheddar cheese on top of my apple filling. Think that would improve it, then add either heavy cream when I serve it, whipped cream, or Vanilla Ice Cream. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmy
YUM!
After your Revie I don’t know if I would want to buy the Dash mini pie maker
My favorite pie is key lime next would probably be coconut custard
You made my two favorite pies, Apple and pumpkin. Thank you for showing the issues with this maker. Did you use canned apple pie filling? If so did you cook it first or put it straight out of the can? We’re the apples done or were they too crispy?
What’s the measurements
4” pie 2” deep
A+ reviews!
Thanks!!
try cutting a piece of aluminum foil in a circle cut out the middle to fit just the edges. Like you would on a regular pie. I would spray the bottom with a butter flavor spray oil just to brown it. Cook the bottom crust a few minutes before you add the filling and top. See if that would bake it thoroughly.
Thanks for making this wonderful video you're so awesome 😎👍
Thanks! 🙂 Hope you are having a great day!
It sounds delicious
But where did you get it?
I got it at Belk. But Target or Amazon should have it.
Wondering if I can make a deep dish pizza in this ?
I thought your pumpkin mix was way to runny and I would roll out that crust much thinner
great review.. I don't need it now. Thanks for saving the time and money!
You’re welcome! 🙂 Have a great weekend.
I have the egg cooker, use it often.
I wish you had tried a chicken pot pie recipe but thanks for the 2 cents.
You definitely have to play around with this mini-pie maker to figure out how to make it work for you. (Kind of like a bread maker in that regard.)
I always use parchment paper to keep the pie from burning on the outside before the dough cooks through completely.
Pumpkin pie and chocolate pie. It's a toss up. Love them both.
After your last Dash review, not only was I inundated with Dash videos, also Dash ads we're showing up in my Gmail account. Google owns UA-cam, so I wasn't surprised at all on both accounts.
Pumpkin. Good video.👍
Not surprised at all! I can look at something and next thing you know I see an ad on my phone for it. It’s crazy!
I have one of these, but it is bigger The brand is Bella.
Cathy have you seen the product called Pizzazz Plus? I have one and love it. Maybe you could review it??
Never heard of it. I’ll google it.
@@2centchick ok.
I wonder how homemade pot pies would work in it.
I think it would work as long as the top crust hits the top.
@@2centchick I agree. Cathy..with my Pizzazz Plus I make frozen pizzas, homemade pizzas, quesadillas, grilled cheese and toast
7:35 get that dog some flea spray or collar!😂😂😆😝
