  • At the 1908 Olympics in London, Italian Dorando Pietri was leading the field in the marathon before he collapsed from exhaustion in the final metres. He received assistance from officials and was able to cross the finish line in first place . However, after a protest from second placed Johnny Hayes, he was later disqualified and the gold went to the American. Nevertheless, Pietri subsequently became an international celebrity, with Queen Alexandra awarding him a gilded silver cup for his efforts.

Strange to think that everyone in this footage is now deceased.

Why is it even a little bit strange that everyone in footage from 113 years ago would all be dead?

In case anyone is wondering, "DNF" stands for "Did Not Finish".
And "DNS" stands for "Did Not Start" (for some reason, that runner was scheduled to run but did not line up at the starting line).
There were 18(!) runners who DNS for this Marathon. Makes you wonder why not.

Would be about time the olympic committee gave him back his gold considering they handed out a gold to Hicks in St.Louis in 1904 in similar conditions.

Not unusual. The national championship college football team in 1912 was completely native Americans. Their star player, Jim Thorpe (birth name Wa-Tho-Huk, translated as "Bright Path,” a member of the Sac and Fox Nation), was an Olympic gold medalist and played professional baseball and football. He was the first president of the NFL. He was voted the greatest athlete of the first half of the 20th century, and there was little disagreement.

Another way the officials screwed Pietri, was when he entered the stadium. He should have turned right (counter- clockwise), but the officials steered him left.

It looked like the finish line tape was thrown out in an impromptu location rather than on the track itself as likely originally intended.

he's not, because he was helped. Not his shame, as well, he didn't decided it. He's a Winner, of course, you're right. I'm proud of Him.
