Food Storage: Rice, In Mason Jars
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 жов 2024
- We package 50# of rice using a food saver vacuum sealer and quart size mason jars. This is a rework of an original video we did. We added a segment at the end to show how to use the food saver vacuum sealer. We do recommend sterilizing the jars before and after each use and use a new lid. We us the sani-tabs from our local restaurant supply during the rinse cycle of the dish washer.
UPDATE: The rice is still good as of 07/14/19, we do rotate our food and replace as we use it. We store our foods at or below 70 degrees.
Thank you as always for watching.
Great video! Not just the information but the ides for safe storage of alot of things in smaller portions. Thanks :)
ours is a foodsaver too, n even older than yours, n hubby says no place to connect a hose to- can't complain cuz he bot it at a yard sale, but can't afford 2 upgrade it either, lol. can still put it in jars, n just add a piece of bay leaf on top of the rice n it'll keep 4ever. we use 1 bayleaf per gal of dry. i have brown rice in a bucket thats 16 yrs old- n not rancid, just like fresh! was in a storage unit longer than intended 2 be originally-in '96, so it really does work! i subbed, ty n GB.
If you've not already done so, I would be interested in a video to see how you're storing all those mason jars.
We just started using canning jars for dry canning and it sure is fast and easy. I was looking for a video and came across this one. Thanks for sharing.
Hi, thank you for watching !
We don't all have large families. I find this is an excellent storage method and amount. The jars are not going anywhere, when I utilize the contents, as I do continuously, they go back in the mix to can other things. I realize the cost is greater, but for the way we eat,and also rotate our stocks, this quart jar method works very well.
Thank you for showing how to use the vacuum sealer . Love it .
TY!
i have 72 buckets ( Oh, it took 2,5 yrs), and Mason Jars, 312 ( stored canned meats and stews and chillis) I canned ALOT on my days off the past 2 yrs.. The buckets are various food stuffs.. I have 400 lbs of rice, we have abig Spread sheet of the foods! I lOVE My Food Saver to seal jars. got 45 lbs of Cocoa selaed in jars and chocloaye candy bars and choc chips.. I have Cous Cous in jars, and Jasmine Rice.. Thanks!! Love your stuff!!
I'm glad you decided to show us the vacuum sealing, I had never seen this before. Great video and yes I have become a subscriber....
I live in Florida and it can be pretty humid if I store these mason jars or the plastic bottles in my garage would that be bad? Or should I just store it in my home which has a/c? Thanks!
Thank you for the inspiration of using canning jars to store rice.
I don't mind using those jars as mice can not chew through it.
Air tight bags get hard and can rub a hole and mice and other insects can chew on it.
Evelyn Shaw Hi, and you can use the jars for other things and are reusable, they fit well in a preparers array of things... thanks !
Hi, yes it is a good idea, and you can reuse the jars !
Also, I worked for a coffee company and they had a dept. that made gift baskets and sold small 1 pot packages of coffee. Those bags lose their seals after awhile. Don't know why, but they had to throw a bunch away because they lost their vacuum.
So, I'd depend upon oxygen absorbers.
Good point, thank you!
Thanks , we all have to learn and share . Our very lives 'could' depend on it . I take down written notes for we just may not have U tube to fall back on . Rice in mason jars is a good idea and mylar bags with buckets also . I think doing both is a big plus . Again thank you !
hi, you are welcome, we do all different ways as well, buckets, jars etc.thanks!
I have two of those old tilia foodsavers one I use regularly the other is backup work great. Now I know how to use the jar sealers thanks for the info.
Wow, 2012 just getting into prepping now so I don’t know how to vacuum seal, I’m sure it will be easy to find out how THX👍
Hi, i would suggest mason jars and oxygen absorbers, it is very simple and cheap, but effective, hope this helps,
@@technician775 thank you
That was very interesting. Thanks for the tip.
welcome :)
Are you using an oxygen absorber now with these mason rice jars? Or does the sealing not require you to use one?
Good video; thanks! To the point and easy to understand.😊👍👍
TY!
Thank you ! we tried !
OK I'm just getting in to trying to learn to can btw love the dog OK what is vacuum sealing a can is that the part where you stick it in the water bath? PS how long does this last shelf life you'd think at 37 I'd been interested in this way before now but I see all these stock piles couponing an i think this would be even cheaper in the long run what do you think :-)
I did this same method two years ago in wide mouth half gallon masons and I would get about 3.5lbs of rice in each. I just checked the seals on the masons I vacuum sealed two years ago and they are still vacuum sealed. I have the Foodsaver wide-mouth vacuum seal adapter.
The half gallon masons come only 6 jars per case, so the quart size does make more since now that I think of it because I use them for pressure canning, but my pressure canner will not fit those half gallon jars I have.
Question sir. Is food sealing and mason jars really needed for something like rice? Wouldn't rice last a long time in a regular bag or food storage container without doing all this?
Rahul And His Planet
Use Mylar bags and 300 cc oxygen absorbers. Mylar bags are 1lb on up then place in a 5 gallon food grade bucket and lid
A lot easier and quicker
Rats like to chew through plastic ,hard or bags.
Rice will not keep as long in the original bag, it will keep in an oxygen free environment and temp at or under 70 degrees for 10 plus years
Thanks for your reply keep up the good work!!!
You may be right, but I've been doing this for years and haven't seen a single bug yet. Keep prepping!
Hey, you've probably answered this question before, sorry, but I was shopping for jars today, I didn't know they made half gallon jars. Would they work for storage? They would be a perfect fit in my cabinet.
Yes, any mason jar.
@@raincoast9010 and i think i have seen some 1 gallon mason jars too..... TY
THANKS for this!! I wondered how to do this and it's easier than I thought! Is there any Brand or Type of FOOD SEALER You recommend?
I need to get that jar attachment for my food saver. Did yours come with that or did you buy it separately? It looks very valuable :) Great ideas in your videos!
So if you cook it (rice, beans), you must dehydrate first before canning in the manner above? I have heard that this can be done with ground hamburger and scarmbled eggs as well, What is a good resources to find out how long these can store?
I enjoyed this video. Question did you scald the jars or lids first? How did you get the rubber lids to stay on since they are dry? How long did the rice left. Want to do this so please help. Thanks.
What are your thoughts on Quinoa? Is it safe to just leave it in the packages they came in? I don't have the food saver. What about 5 ballon food grade buckets with the oxygen absorbers? Or are mason jars the only safe way to go?
Is it a longer life then sealing in a bag? Just doesnt seem very cost efficent, Plus with glass you have to be more careful to prevent breakage.
Tech775,are you sure this is the best way to store rice and sugar or any other dry food for long term storage?what about mylar bags?
Can you use lids that were previously used for pressure canning? Or do you need new, unused lids? What about the Tattler lids?
Do you need to sterilize the inside of the jars prior to adding the rice?
Hey, I was just wondering if you store corn meal? I know that is is going to be VERY expensive before long since the drought, and I don't grind my own. I have about 25 pounds of it in the freezer but wondered if I could vacuum sea or mylar bag it. It takes up so much of my freezer space but I don't want weevils either. What do you think?
Love your videos.
Thanks,
Myra
can i reuse the jars with lids or i only use for one time. Thank you very much for your reply. merry christmas and a happy new year
Great video. Does the rice have a 25 year shelf life like in the #10 cans?
hello,
Good video, I have had basmati brown & white rice in our freezer for about 3 yrs. do you think I can now take them out & put them in the jars as you've done here/
Thank you so much. It's definitely time we all starting learning all these tricks, before the economy collapses altogether !
About oxygen absorbers, if you have a quart mason jar with something in it and you only want to take out some of the item, will the oxygen absorber still work once you close the jar again or is it a one time seal?
Thanks for your reply.
Do you have to freeze the rice before storing to get rid of the larvy and bugs?
Tellin DaTruth, that is my question too.
After you sterilize your jars fill with the rice then place back in the oven on 225 for 40 mins let it cool in the oven then lid take email out throw in a oxygen absorber vacuum seal the lid on check your seal and once all is sealed go head and store hope this helps
Hi, you can, just ensure all moisture is gone before you seal. we have never had a problem and have gone thru a LOT of rice over the years from 1998 and never froze before canning, thanks !
Hello Tech, I understand that brown rice contains a little oil, so how long will it last in sealed jars
Thanks
Al
Brown rice will not store for much longer than about a year....., i would have empty jars ready to store, if things get where their is a run on rice, beans etc, most people will not buy the brown rice. that is a perfect opportunity to store it for a year..... TY!
Thanks. LDs Cannery ( have gone 8 times) and Restaraunt Depot. Is that where You shop?
NO! You can't store foods that should be pressure canned this way! The high heat of the pressure canner is necessary to kill Botulinum. Botulism spores are anaerobic, meaning they thrive in a no-oxygen environment. This method is for dry foods only.
Good idea. I'm prepping for 3 unless my father in law dies first and wasn't excited about storing in buckets because I am worried about waste and insect contamination. It's also easier to hide smaller jars. I get tons of free jars so I'm not that worried about cost. Thanks.
Christine Strauss Hi, good game plan for you and your family, the big buckets are ok for large amount of people, but smaller containers for just a few i think works better, less chance of insects, spoilage etc....you have a good point....
Hi, good idea, plus you can reuse the jars, for large amount of people, buckets is the way to go or a good variety as you can always reuse the jars....
Nice video. i've read from most of the canning companies to leave the bands OFF. The vacuum will remain. keeping the bands on can lead to moisture getting in the threads and breaking the seals. Have you read this?
Mason jars make me nervous simply because they can fall down and break. Are there any other small containers that can be vacuum sealed not made out of glass for food storage?
Where did you buy your lids??? Yours doesn't have the white underside that contains BPA.
If you check the USDA or any state Ag. Dept.on home canning you will find that home canning in 1/2 gallon jars is not recommended as the food inside does not heat equally during the canning process.
With just the vacuum seal, you don't need to put in an oxygen absorber pack? How long will this method keep?
Yes, I did like the way that was stored. Never thought of that. I was thinking it had to be packed in mylar bags.
Do you need to freeze rice before storing in mason jars ? I am assuming that Ehow states to kill eggs etc. ????
I do my rice and such in 5mil bags with oxygen absorbers and seal them. I never really want to use my canning jars for anything other than garden stuff. I've never really figured it out, to see if putting rice in jars is cheaper than the bags,ox absorb, and tote/bucket. Just wondering if you have figured out the difference in cost.
Hi, i am not worried about cost so much as showing people they can store in jars, don't forget you have the value of the jar to can your vegetables, and it does no good for a good jar to sit empty if you can store something you can eat :) my thoughts...
Do you freeze your rice before you can it or heat it in the jars before sealing them? Thanks ahead of time
Hi, no on both, i just fill the jars or bags, the lack of oxygen will keep the bugs out, also, rotate your food out every so often, helps keep it fresh. TY!
I buy rice in 25lb bags and while I appreciate the savings in a bulk purchase, I think preserving rice in jars takes up too much jars and storage space. Where do you store 29 jars in the average kitchen? Plus these are glass jars so they're fragile. For the sake of storage, it's easier storing the rice in those cambro square plastic containers with airtight lids. I store my flour in there and it lasts over a year!
Then comes the practicality of storing rice in 1qt jars. For a small household, you may make cook 2-3 cups each time and have leftovers. That means going through a jar after every 3 or 4 uses.
Sorry, if this sounds like nagging but it just seemed odd to me.
On second thought, I think this depends on the person's diet. Africans and Asians eat a lot more rice than most Americans so this might seem a bit OTT for us. :)
Thanks for sharing.
agree, we have a balance of jars to cans to buckets, it works for us in the long run, need jars for preserving, need bulk for long term food supplies, we use jars to portion out the buckets.....think this thru...hope this helps...
***** I think it's a good idea to store your rice in small portions. If you leave a big bag open for a while in the tropics the bugs will ravage it. Will definitely look into picking up some bottles.
if you freeze the grains then remove and store them- will this damage the nutrition? I ask because I had a lot of barley which I stored in jars. I did not vacuum seal or do anything. I just poured the Barley into the jars. After a few months I noticed I had some bugs in them. I froze the cans and that killed the bugs and now the Barley in Cans is ok. I was wondering is there any reason to NOT Freeze grains when they are first put in cans and then store?
Hello Technician775, been enjoying your vids and it motivated me to signup for an account to post a question. I've always understood that 'light' (as well as moisture, oxygen, temp. [& pest]) is one of the things that should be eliminated for proper long term food storage. Is this correct and if so, how do you address this with the jars?
Hello I don't have one of those machines or absorbers. I place the rice in a deep frezzer for two weeks. I heard it kills any bugs than I just jar it close the lid as tight as I can how long do you think the rice will last
Will Do!!! I have subbed! Sorry I did not do it before now!
Hello, I went back pretty far and didn't find this answer, you may have answered it further on back, but is there any reason this method would not work for beans? Thanks
Q: When you can dry foods like rice & Beans...
Do you wash & Dry New Jars first or are they clean enough new from the factory?
THX
Hi...always wash and dry jars before use is my recommendation...I do at times and don't at times..but I always suggest you do it...also...you can use a sanitizer at the rinse cycle!
Thanks for the videos......I have learned a lot.....Im new to prepping.....how do you know what food needs and oxygen absorber and which ones don't.......Also...if I don't need to use all of the absorbers how do I save the unused ones? Thanks!!!
You can OVEN can dry goods also..check out my video "Oven Canning" I researched this way because I don't have the jar sealer attachment for my vacuum sealer! I store flour this way also..some in vacuum seal bags ..Check out my video "Vacuum sealing flour" Flour was on sale this week and I bought 100 pounds..some will get vacuum sealed and some in Jars ( half gallon) I prefer the jars because they are then safe from mice.
Great video. Can you tell me how long rice would store safely using this equipment / method? Thanks.
Please let us know how long we can store the rice with this method
What about killing all the bugs/eggs in the rice beforehand? Did you freeze it first?
Hi, no, never do, i just pack it like it comes, have had no issues so far.... TY! got to be careful after you take it out of the freezer, let it air out and dry out,
I know you have dealt with Walmart, etc... have you had any experience with their generic jars? Mainstays?
will the food saver comes with the jars when i buy or i have to buy it saparately
If you have frozen a big bag of rice like that could it still be canned?
Hey, I'm new at this and am researching somewhat. How long does this dry canning preserve the food..i.e. rice??
Thanks
Appreciate your posts! What is the model number of your FoodSaver?
Great video thanks! How long will the rice last in comparison with storing in Mylar bags and bucket please ? This looks easier !
Same time, just ensure temps stay below 70 degrees..
not sure if $50 on jars are worth $10 in rice. ide also be canning something more tasty. isnt there a bigger container that can store rice more econonomical?
I'm wondering if there are any lists of good foods to put up with O2 absorbers? Example, how about parboiled Bulgar wheat, wild rice, bismati rice, etc...
Thank you for your video. Should you rinse and dry the rice before storing it? I've heard that you should rinse the naturally occurring arsenic off of the rice.
I do not, we package as is and rinse before cooking
I liked your video, very nice job! Can I add my 3 cents in? Add a 300 cc oxygen absorber in the middle of the rice, maybe one at the very top too, LOWER the rice level to where the curve is on the jar (gives more head space) and move of a negative pressure when sealing, plus the oxygen absorbers will ADD to that seal, and you'll have enough rice left over to fill that remaining jar that was left, to 30 mason jars. :)
I have noticed that u keep your oxygen absorbers in a mason jar, how long do they keep before losing there life.
It looks like you used white rice. Is brown rice out of the questions?
hi Tech. Thanks for the Great Tutorials..
Q - Should we be using oxygen absorbers -and- are you happy with the foodsaver brand machine? Are there other similar machines?
many thanks..
Do you sterilize your jars before doing this? Very informative video - THANKS!
Can you do it with cooked foods as well save the pressure cooker???
Mylar bags wont break and they come in sizes that allow you to portion out the rice.
Can you can rice after expiration date and how long will it last. Found some bags of it in my basement Also it has some little black bugs in it can I sift them out and then çan it? Like that we don't have to watch you fill all the jars and then seal them . Thanks
hi...I would discard that rice and use fresh rice for long term storage...ty!
great video...
Can you use this same method for brown rice? Is the shelf life the same?
I have seen the gallon mason jars at walmart what size OA would say to use for that size jar
I see them at thrift stores all the time, but never noticed one with this attachment. I use to use mine frequently but it also didn't have this attachment.
How long will the rice keep? How come you don't use oxygen absorbers?
I don't have that tube with clamp lid for sucking out air....I can only use oxygen packs...I think I put one in each jar....my QUESTION is: do we have to use that special tube attachment used with the vac sealer machine? My machine is not made for one.
i filled 5 gallon buckets with mylar bags of rice and put the oxygen absorbers in the middle of the rice.
does it matter that i didnt put the oxygen absorber on top?
thanks
My wife and I are getting our first food saver and prepping for the first time. I was wondering if could could store wheat, rye, or barley the same way.
Brown Rice has oil,can u still vacuum seal it this way? Do u use oxygen absorber in your jars?
I do not store brown rice...it is packed for a shelf life of about a year from the mill. TY!
Does the food saver get all of the air out of the jar? Do I need to use an oxygen absorbing pouch to the jar prior to sealing?
i do both a lot of times, i will put an oxygen absorber and vacuum seal it, double the protection, easy to do, TY!
Im not sure why this works with a solid lid, how does it get the air out? if the rubber seal allows a vac then doesn't it also allow the air back in?...or maybe I should be asking foodsaver that... : /
Do you put absorbers in with the rice?
Awesome. What kind of sealer was that?
Hi, use oxygen absorbers, they get all of the oxygen out, if the sealer is weak, it will leave oxygen in the jars, TY!!! use a 100cc absorber for a quart jar,
I use 1/2 gallon jars for flour and corn meal so I can get a measuring scoop inside.
I have also pre-cooked a lot of my rice, beans and pasta -- taking into consideration that fuel for cooking might be in short supply. This way I only need to soak it and then bring to eating temp.
MrNoBuddySpecial -- I buy canning jars and food locally for cash. I do not use a discount card for prep. supplies. Anything bought on the internet is readily traceable.
I had no idea. Thanks, I will be doing this for sure.
What's the shelf life on the rice properly sealed?
Two questions:
1) Have you ever used Tattler reusable lids to do dry canning? I'm curious if they can be used.
2) When you remove the jar sealer, do you even have problems with the lid popping off as you are removing it?
Thanks for the good vid and great help!
Hi TY, i have not used the Tattler lids...and yes, i have had trouble with the lids popping up, i moisten the rims of the jars and the lid...not wet, just barely moist...a lot of time you will have a little dust on the rim...wiping it down helps. TY!
I have heard some people say that pressure canning rice is a big no no , But I was thinking that I buy campbell's chicken and rice all the time and cant figure out where the taboo would come in at ? Any comments ? Thanks
Thank you for teaching me how to do that!!! I've always been leary of doing that, but it's easy! I'm going to use it.
Tianca
cool :)
hey awsome dog and can u use 2 liters 4 rice?
