Yea maybe someday to save fuel they will just connect a bunch of rowing machines to an electric motor for propulsion haha

I'm diggin the videos Bryan. I've always had an innate curiosity about shipping and marine life. As an aviation pilot, especially when it comes to bridge operations, there are a lot of similarities. Anyways, keep posting!
Thank you! Yes there are many similarities between aviation and maritime. The maritime industry has been rapidly evolving and is actually modeling a lot of our bridge procedures on how the FAA and aviation industry does things. Much like crew resource management on a flight deck, we have adapted bridge resource management. I have seen this done the best so far on cruise ships!
I kinda miss the old twin-span Cooper River bridges. When I was a submarine sailor stationed in Charleston in the 80s, it was always fun driving across the two-lane span from Mt. Pleasant back into Charleston... particularly after a night of partying. LOL

The Ravenel Bridge, previously known as the Cooper River bridge before it was replaced was used for the bridge scene from Die Hard 2 where Bruce Willis jumped onto the container ship. Just an FYI.

I had my share of crabbing in the Pentland Firth with 50.000 ton tanker, 45 degree port and shift to 45 starboard in a few minutes! Regards,Paul

I personally think one of the greatest inventions of the 20th Century that doesn't seem to get mentioned a lot is the container ship system, big shipping boxes that stack on ships and can be carried on land by either trains or trucks. I thought I once heard a statistic that the system reduced the cost of shipping a VCR from China to the US to about 2 bucks. I want to find out more.
Great videos and comments. Could you comment on how cargo loaded so it is easy to sort once in port. How are the containers marked for identification? Electronically I suspect. What happens if a container goes overboard in a storm? Any chance of recovery?

Thanks Mom! Yea Pentland Firth is stunning. I launched my drone off the ship near there and got a bunch of great shots of the ship passing the cliffs. I don’t remember specifically where that whale shark was but I do know we were drifting at the time and fishing for tuna off the stern

Rotterdam is a great city! We usually visit a small town nearby called Brielle. This ship has 7 flights of stairs from the upper deck to the Navigation Bridge
@@BryanBoyle I am only familiar with Bergambacht the most, east of Rotterdam. But many other towns like Wouw and Utrecht and a few others. But, it's all just a fantasy. So expensive to fly there now and covid. thanks.

I am currently studying in the national maritime centre on Ireland to do this kind of work.the biggest challenge in this feild is the demanding workload on the ship and relationships off it. Luckily my girlfriend is understanding of my passion.
My brother and I were talking tonight. He works for an tug company that Fuels ships, Do Mersk ships run US crews or foreign or a mixture, of both great videos always informational.

Maersk has a bunch of different flagged vessels. The American subsidiary I work for is Maersk Line Limited and is based out of Norfolk, VA. We are either 100% American crewed or occasional have a couple green card mariners onboard. The rest of Maersk is all usually crewed by non Americans.
Quite a lot of the companies get manpower mostly from SEAsia because it's more economical. It's business afterall.

The reason for this is the Jones Act requires American crews if the ship is going between two U.S. Ports. The thinking is in the event of a war, it would be important that we have an experienced domestic Merchant Marine fleet

Yes I went to the US Merchant Marine Academy. I’m biased towards that one and always recommend it as the top choice, but all the other state academies are great options and everyone has the opportunity to graduate with the same Third Mate or Third Engineer license!

Have a look at Bigwavemaster1 who is a master on a rescue ship supporting oil rigs in the North Sea. 60' waves are not uncommon.
@@willford8475 You have no choice out at sea. I was in a typhoon back in the late 70s. 30 degree rolls. I was sea sick, not scared. But that was a much smaller US Navy ship. USS Durham LKA 114. They sunk it almost a year ago off the coast of Hawaii. video is on youtube.
The only time I recall being somewhat concerned was back in 2010 aboard a small grain ship. Due to piracy concerns at the time, we decided to skip the Suez Canal on our way to Kenya which required us to go around the cape of good hope in South Africa. This area is notorious for rough seas, and our smaller grain ship with limited freeboard took a pounding for a couple days. The ship was rolling pretty violently and nobody slept for the entire passage. We had to wedge ourselves in our racks between the bulkhead using our immersion suit bags so we wouldn’t roll out of bed. The seas were crashing against the bow hard enough that they were spraying the bridge of the ship over and over. The captain remained calm and spent the majority of the time on the bridge, but I could see even he was a little concerned but did a good job of not showing it. I was only a cadet at the time so didn’t have much experience to compare it to, but looking back I can say for sure it was the worst sea conditions I have been in!
Have you, or any of the crew you’ve been with go fishing while on the ship?
Yes most ships have fishing gear onboard and a lot of crew like to fish when we are drifting or anchored. I have caught a few tuna myself when drifting!

Have some containers got astray?
I keep in mind that there are so many containers to keep track of. Maybe a container that is going to Sweden is unloaded in the wrong port and ports in South Africa and there it is forgotten. How common is it?
I have not been on a ship when containers fell off, but it does happen more frequently than you may think. Just last year more than 3000 containers fell off ships. The number has been increasing as these ships are being built much larger. The containers are getting stacked way too high
@@BryanBoyle Thanks for the reply. I am interested in sailing and dream of sailing around the world one day. I have read a lot about containers that have fallen off. They can be difficult to see, especially at rough seas. Attempts have been made to get the container manufacturers to paint containers in clearly visible colors, but it does not work. Manufacturers want to paint their containers in their colors.
So, no fishing for whale shark. Looks like one would keep the ship in meat for months - this is meant to be a silly comment.
We were fishing for tuna at the time while drifting which is why you can see the line in the water. I had never seen a whale shark before and didn’t realize they didn’t eat meat! Haha yea that sure would feed the whole crew for awhile but I find them way too majestic to fish for!
