    Hi everyone! Just wanted to say you don’t need to comment on my mattress... I know there is info out there that says it could mold, it hasn’t. I would appreciate slowing down the unsolicited advice. As I said in the beginning, this is just me sharing what I do and you are free to do the same 👍

      I never even heard of that. As a teenager, I slept on a mattress on the floor for 5 years. When I got married, we slept on a mattress for 4-5 years. Never had mold, never had bugs. In fact, my partner never had a back problem until we got a bed frame.

    As someone else mentioned, keeping your bed on the ground can invite mold, but equally important for where you live, it can trap bugs/pests. I kept my mattress on the floor in college then when I moved and lifted it up found a whole menagerie of dead bugs. For long term bed directly on floor usage you should treat it like an actual futon (not the folding bed, the actual kind) and air it out regularly. If it's a more stiff mattress, just lifting it up and tipping it against the wall for a few hours should suffice. If it's really soft you may want to drape it over a chair.

      Hear, hear! I almost never wear makeup anymore, not even to work (I am an accountant), only for special occasions. I also chopped my hair and have a faux-hawk now, easier for upkeep. I virtually never buy jewelry, clothes, or shoes unless somethings breaks and I need to replace it. I can attest to that 🙋‍♀️ I wouldn't call myself a minimalist, but I do try to not keep so many things around. Growing up, my mom liked to keep many unnecessary items. She did it to send stuff to her family in Mexico, but I still felt cluttered often.

    • @fionam5879
      @fionam5879 4 роки тому +26

      I think it also works in the reverse, minimalists/frugal produce more minimalists: my parents had a lot of kids to buy for so we always got one quality coat/pair of shoes/bathing suit/special occasion outfit and it needed to last until we grew out of it and hopefully after so it could be handed down.

    • @sevnhana2898
      @sevnhana2898 4 роки тому +29

      I grew up in a maximalist type of home. We had a huugggeee house with a pool and I was definitely spoiled with getting anything I wanted basically. My dad has also always been a bit of a hoarder so my parents have always had to have large homes to keep all their shit. Now I never want to live in a large space and I am always trying to simplify my life. I currently live in a 1.5 bedroom apartment and it feels like way too much space so now I’m trying to move to a studio. Me and my brother talk about how we grow up and neither one of us wants to live in a huge house or have so much stuff so I definitely think that made us more “minimalist” even though I don’t call myself that.

    For people wanting to cut down on furniture clutter in the bedroom: Instead of a bed frame, which is entirely useless, you can instead get a captain's bed. It's basically a long, wide dresser that your mattress sits on. I have a foam mattress so no box spring needed Mine is twin-sized with six very large drawers. The drawers don't go all the way to the back of the frame, leaving about a 9-inch gap where I can put things behind the drawers. This space is where I store all my sentimental or rarely used items, and also where I put dry goods for long-term prepper storage. This type of bed made it possible for me to get rid of a dresser, a chest, and two plastic bins. Each drawer has a purpose and the amount of items I own of that type are not allowed to exceed what I can fit in the drawers. I feel that this is a wonderful system for children, especially, but adults can certainly pretty much clear their rooms of everything but a desk, reading chair, and bed.

      mlynn998 I just really don’t understand why something that is so natural and pure is getting made into something plastic and toxic for the environment just because people don’t have a green thumb I don’t think that’s a very good excuse to buy something plastic that’s meant to be good for the planet. There’s many ways to decorate that don’t involve plastic but I definitely don’t go around shaming people for buying them I just really do not like the whole “fake plants thing” it just kind of makes me sad

    Hi Shelbi! Book recommendation: I just read this great book on holiday 'The Great Derangement' (Ghosh, 2016) which is kind of a philosophers stance on how literature/arts/media needs to stop writing climate change as accusatory/uncanny and focus more on collective action and climate justice. Messages like eco-minimalism, that living more sustainably is not about guilt and sacrifice but actually makes your life better: "how inseparable is the bond between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society, and interior peace."

      I might argue that renting clothing has far less impact than purchasing and disposing it; especially for people who would only wear an item once or twice anyway (which sadly is most people). Nuuly was hugely helpful for my transition to a more minimalist wardrobe... as I was massively downsizing the clothes I own I still had a few pieces that were new to me each month that scratched the itch of novelty. Once I fine-tuned my wardrobe, I loved wearing everything I had enough that I didn't feel the need for that novelty anymore so I canceled the service. Really helped me break the habit of purchasing that I was in before, plus helped reinforce the lesson that the rush I feel from getting something new wears of super fast.

      It mostly stems from agrarian traditions is my understanding, and it's like inviting in the new season. It makes less sense with our modern lives, since we are generally less beholden to the seasons for food and stuff, but it's kind of like a hold over from by gone times where you needed to prepare for each season. Such traditions like spring cleaning or fall canning are examples. Even though we don't shut up our homes in the winter and we don't lack food in the winter.
      I think it's a nice way to keep oneself more tied to the seasons, but it does invite a lot of clutter. So to each their own.

      (Speaking as an American with a stand mixer) I think the main draw of having a "mixer" is less that it can make icing or whipped cream or whatever, but more because of the versatility of the product, as most mixers can mix, whisk, knead dough, make pasta shapes etc. Also, they're real lifesavers when a recipe is like "knead for 15 minutes" or "mix (super difficult to mix thing)" and you've been carrying heavy stuff around your minimum-wage job all day and can't be bothered

My daughter is still nursing at 32 months so you better believe my 👀 are some of the most deflated sandbags out there, and I enjoy going braless as much as I can. Not saying you have to use it, but if anyone wants to get dry shampoo to work, the best way to use it is at night. Spray a generous amount on roots and then just leave it, dont brush or touch it. When you wake up the ashiness is gone and theres no dirty feeling because its been absorbing the oil as it comes up all night, which is better than spraying it over top of oiliness in the morning.

    Abouy seasonal decor: I do not own any. But what I do is have a different scented candle for every season. Magnolia for spring, berries for summer, old wood for fall and apple cinnamon for winter😍 such a scent changes the whole atmosphere in you room and I don't feel the need for any other decorations

    Very cool tips!! I don't label myself as a "minimalist" but I live off-grid in Hawaii with my husband and 2 dogs in a 500 sf house. So a lot of things people own we don't! Things with heating elements, toasters, microwaves, or clothes dryer. (I do own a hair dryer and flat iron - I have thick unruly hair and on sunny days I have enough solar to use them). We don't own any holiday decor, any fake plants, and only one of whatever is functional, we make most of our own cleaning products, use reusable rags, for kitchen we have minimal cooking utensils, no dish washer. Basically it's the nature of living a small space off of the land, there is just no room for things that aren't useful. 🙏🙏

    I used to not have a mixer, then I was given a Kitchen Aid stand mixer by a family friend that was older. It was a wedding present when she was young. When she moved into a retirement home she gave it to me. It has lasted decades. She said she replaced the motor (or something like that) and the bowl once. It has been a game-changer.

    Okay so. I was given my kitchenaid mixer as a Christmas gift literally eight years ago. It still works like it is BRAND new. When it popped up on my memories on facebook I was shocked at how long I have owned it. I also use it for more than just baking! We have the grinder attachment which we use to make our own sausage, and the pasta extruder to make our own short pasta. If you really want it, I think it is worth taking the plunge.

    A bed frame creates circulation which is good for your respiratory health. If you don't have one, make sure you clean very well under the mattress regularly :)

    I use baby powder in my hair when I need to help reduce the oil in it, I also have naturally oily curly hair, I only wash it 2-3 times a week, since the more I wash it, the oily it becomes. I have accepted that it will look dirty either by the end of that day or the next day after it has been washed. I have a stand mixer I got when I turned 16 and will be 30 in May. It was refurbished and has been one of the better birthday presents I have gotten by far.

    I stopped buying paper towels back in the '00s, I'm surprised how many of my friends have never considered this as an option. I stopped using bleach then too, but since I started fostering cats, bleach is back in my life. It is better to bleach all the toys and bedding between cats than the throw it all away with every litter of kittens that comes in my house.
    I do have a ridiculous number of small kitchen appliances, but my philosophy is if it gets me eating more fresh food at home then that is a win. When things break I try to fix them, even/especially electronics.

    I’m so appreciative of your videos, advice and sharing your journey.
    I am new to researching ways to be more eco friendly and living a more sustainable lifestyle.
    What I’ve quickly learned is everyone is different and we need to respect that. Just like every other aspect of each other’s lives. You can share your thoughts but if it’s not for us we move on to the next one.
    For me personally I love having my nails done and I love purses. This is not something I would give up. But that doesn’t minimize your opinion nor does it make me a bad person who doesn’t care about our world.
    Thanks again for sharing. I am really looking forward to making steps for myself and my family to improve how we treat our planet day to day.

    I'm new to your content, and I'm trying my best to reduce the amount of waste that my house puts out...
    Totally with you on the plastic plants, but unless you grow all of your houseplants from seeds, then how they get to your home isn't as "green" as people think. They're mass grown in huge greenhouses with massive heaters that rely on electricity to keep them on for a lot of the year, a lot of them are imported, and use harmful pesticides to keep them looking their best when they get to their respective sellers. Not a judgment at all, just food for though. Love your channel! ❤️

    The figurine thing is so funny because after I started decluttering I decluttered half of my snowman collection. When you collect things people always by them for you but I just kept my favorite most special ones. In hindsight it makes no sense to have a bookshelf full of things that weren’t special/favorites.

    I totally agree on the wall canvas! What I'm working on now instead for wall decoration is buying frames at thrift stores and printing out photos from my travels. That way I get both wall art and something to remember my travels from instead of souvenirs.

    You can easily find stand mixers second hand out if you do eventually decide to make the leap! Especially around Christmas when everyone is either upgrading their or have received new ones as gifts
