  • This is RAW footage that has NOT BEEN EDITED in any form. I wanted to check on the animals and instead of driving and walking I took the drone to the sky and am sharing what I saw.
    Granja Caimito is a project aiming to restore soil fertility in Valle de los Pedroches in Andalusia, Spain. Our goal is to be able to provide high quality food without damaging the soil or mistreat animals.
    A custom map allows you to better follow along: www.google.com...
    We bought a degenerated piece of Dehesa land, 45 hectares, by the end of 2017, built a small house to be on the land day and night and have since been working on restoring soil fertility. Check out the very first video • New FARM practicing RE... to see how the place looked at the very beginning.

    Wow. Those swales and ponds really hydrate the soil. It would be interesting, if it is possible, to have some consistent flight path you could repeat every so often to check progress across a few years. No doubt you will see even greater improvements

      @ProjectGranjaCaimito  2 роки тому +3

      Yes, that thought about a consistent flight path has crossed my mind too but then as the land is pretty narrow it's not that hard to do that manually here and there.
      The good thing about the tillage is that now we can clearly see what that swale is doing. I am equally impressed.

    My goodness, I don't know if my eyes are lying but what has happened in just one year looks amazing... The amount of biomass growt already this spring is astonishing, you are going to need more grazers really soon...

      Speaking about more grazers. The young ones will grow up and we want to keep them for that reason. Nobody believes us just yet ;-)

    We can see the evidence of tractor' limits in wet terrain. Very good and unusual idea, this silent overview. Welle done.

      Right. The tractor should not have been there in the first place. There was a misunderstanding. The mules did fine at the same spot.

    That wet spot really is wet isn’t it!! Was this the swale that was being supplemented with the water hose? It’s a nice demonstration of the water movement below the area with the highest hydraulic pressure ie the integrated pond that has had standing water most of the time. Are you planning to level out the bottom of the swale to even out the water level and thus better distribute the downslope infiltration of water? Another interesting video. We have been talking about using drones for monitoring on our property and this footage has convinced me to dig a little deeper. Thanks!

    • @ProjectGranjaCaimito
      @ProjectGranjaCaimito  2 роки тому

      We kind of created a well ;-) And yes that is from the swale where we add water.
      Later on we do want to level out the bottom a bit so that it fills more evenly.
      Our drone is a DJI Mavic Pro. Very simple to fly with a good 4K camera which is the most important part.

    I like what you doing to the land.
    You have all the animals to earn money to pay for the workers and all the material i suppose.
    Do you also will plant oaks in the future?
    What would happen if you had no animals on your land? Would the trees be able to groe?

    • @ProjectGranjaCaimito
      @ProjectGranjaCaimito  2 роки тому

      The money question is answered here: caimito.eu/concept/business
      In the section about projects you'll also find more about what we are planting and why.
      Without the animals it would be a LOT harder in terms of everything. We created a system of animal lanes so that we can open/close gates instead of herding them and still get the herd effect of mob grazing.

    Hello, I have just found your channel, grate videos for us, beginner permaculturers:) can I ask you how we manage swales on very flat land, how to know where to dug swales on a flat land, thank you

    • @ProjectGranjaCaimito
      @ProjectGranjaCaimito  2 роки тому

      Thank you. Welcome aboard.
      Any water retaining structure needs to be on contour so that the water does not flow but stays in place. Swales can be very shallow. Important is to keep the water for longer.

      In Niger they use demilune pits. Zai pits, basically the same thing but smaller.

    But Dude, where is my spaghetti western music? All jokes aside, what a great tool for land sssessment. Can you link it up to gps and a ASL reading to give a topographic map?

    • @ProjectGranjaCaimito
      @ProjectGranjaCaimito  2 роки тому

      Well.... That a quick thing :-)
      The sad part about topographic maps is that around here there is no other data (I've looked a while ago) than that from the Space Shuttle mission with the Radar. Too coarse. You see more by just looking.

    If you had a spillway between the swales an the ponds you could have a better distribution of moisture. Now the water accumulates in the pond instead for along the entire structure.

    • @ProjectGranjaCaimito
      @ProjectGranjaCaimito  2 роки тому +1

      There is a high spot at some point. Kind of a "spillway" by accident. On the other hand these swales are working. Water is soaking in.

      You mean the oak trees or the Paulownias?
      The Paulownias below the berm are a short-term temporary thing. Those that sit in the center of the berm are for shade an ongoing supply of biomass in the form of their leaves.

      But then we are doing something about that and for example the trees here are allowed to create offspring.
